you had worn vintage valentino, borrowed from your mother’s archive and tried not to roll your eyes when the daily mail called it "a tribute." the gala was beautiful, sure. golden light spilling across mirrored tabletops, designer gowns floating across the ballroom like silk ghosts. but it was all noise. you’d done a dozen of these in the last six months alone. smile, pose, sip, repeat. the same people, the same names, the same air kisses that missed.

and then there was him.

you hadn’t even noticed him at first. just another tall guy in a tux, hovering near the veuve clicquot table like everyone else with too much money and nowhere better to be. but he smiled when you walked past, not the smirk you were used to, not the you’re hot andi know it glance. just a real smile. slightly crooked, maybe even nervous.

"is it just me", he said as you reached for a glass, "or is the champagne warmer than usual at these things?"

you turned, caught off guard by the candor. "maybe it’s because we’re all lukewarm on being here."

that made him laugh. actually laugh. and just like that, something shifted.

You ended up talking. first by the champagne table, then by a half-forgotten balcony two floors above the ballroom, where you could still hear the string quartet below but not the hum of meaningless conversation. he was funny in that understated way, dry, self-deprecating, canadian. when you told him who your parents were, he didn’t blink.

"i figured", he said, looking you over with mock seriousness. "you’ve got the cheekbones and the controlled trauma of someone raised in the spotlight."

you snorted. "controlled trauma. that’s generous."

he grinned. "from one nepo baby to another."

and that was it, the unspoken link between you, unlocked. you talked about growing up with cameras in your face, about boarding schools you both hated, about how weird it felt to succeed and still wonder if you’d earned any of it. he told you he didn’t want to race at first. that he thought the pressure would crush him. you told him you hadn’t planned on modeling either, that you thought you’d study art history in florence, maybe disappear. He listened like no one else ever had.

the sky turned dark. the party raged on without you. neither of you noticed.

"i thought you’d be. i don’t know." he looked down at the space between you, like it surprised him too. "colder."

"most people do."

"but you’re not", he said, softly. "you’re just sharp."

you didn’t respond. just looked at him, really looked at the boy who’d grown up in garages and yachts, who knew what it was to be seen by everyone and understood by no one. and for the first time in a long time, you didn’t feel like you had to explain yourself.

when he walked you back to the ballroom, the lights felt too bright. the music too loud. the spell was broken but something lingered, still humming in your chest.

the next morning, your phone lit up with texts and headlines.

you hadn’t been back to the house in ages.

not the london one with the private chef and cold marble floors, the house. the one tucked into the oxfordshire countryside, where the football boots still sat by the back door and your brothers’ laughter somehow still echoed in the hallways, years after they’d moved out.

your mum opened the front door barefoot, with a glass of wine in her hand and a knowing look in her eye.

"so this is him", she said, drawing lance into a quick hug before he had time to panic.

lance laughed, a little nervously. "should i be scared?"

"yes", brooklyn called from the kitchen. "but only a little."

You rolled your eyes. "everyone behave."

it was silverstone week, and technically lance should’ve been resting, the usual pre-race routine, controlled meals, lots of stretching, no stress. but he’d asked where you grew up, and somehow that turned into you driving him out here in his mercedes, singing along to the radio, and watching the fields blur past like you were sixteen again.

now he was standing in your childhood kitchen, tall and slightly awkward, being handed a cup of tea by your dad and asked about his suspension settings by your youngest brother.

"you’re braver than i thought" you said quietly, watching him navigate it all with a kind of quiet charm.

he turned to you, eyes soft. "they love you."

"they tolerate me."

"no", he said. "they really love you. i get it."

it was a simple thing, but it made something in your chest twist a little. he said it like it was obvious. like of course people adored you, because how could they not?

later, after a much needed catch up with your mum you found them in the garden, your dad and lance, standing near the old stone wall where you and your brothers used to play penalty shootouts. lance had one hand resting on a football, and your dad was mid-story, gesturing with the kind of relaxed confidence that only came out when he felt at ease.

you paused by the door, watching for a second.

"i told him i was better at free kicks", lance said, grinning, "but i didn’t realise i’d have to prove it."

your dad laughed. "you’re in my house now, mate. no free rides."

you rolled your eyes, stepping out onto the grass. "are you making him play football before a race weekend? he has, like, limbs to protect."

"i'm just testing his coordination", your dad replied, and gave lance a nod. "he’s alright."

"high praise", you teased, leaning into lance’s side.

"i try", your dad said dryly, then looked at you for a beat longer than usual. "can i steal her for a second?"

lance gave a mock salute. "all yours, sir."

your dad walked with you toward the side path that led to the rose garden, hands tucked into his back pockets like he always did when something was on his mind. you waited.

"he’s nice", he said eventually.

you smiled. "he is."

"and he really likes you."

you glanced at him, surprised. "you got that from an hour and one football joke?"

he gave you a look, one of those looks, the quiet dad ones that said i know you better than you know yourself.

"i got it from the way he looks at you when you’re not paying attention", he said softly. "and the way you look at him like... like you finally exhaled."

that hit somewhere deep. You looked down, heart doing that strange, hopeful flutter.

"i didn’t think you’d notice."

"i notice everything with you" he said, bumping your shoulder with his. "you’ve always been good at pretending you’re fine. you’re not pretending anymore."

you didn’t say anything for a moment. just breathed it in, the sun on your skin, the scent of grass and old lavender, the fact that your dad saw you. really saw you.

"he makes me feel calm", you said. "not like i have to be ‘on’ all the time."

your dad nodded slowly. "that’s worth more than any surname, you know."

you wrapped your arms around him, burying your face in his shoulder for a second like you used to when you were little.

"thanks, dad."

“Ready to see Daddy do his job, peanut?” Lance Stroll crouched down, adjusting the little Aston Martin cap on his daughter’s head. Chloe, who just turned five, beamed up at him, her eyes wide with a mixture of awe and excitement. This was her first time at a proper Formula 1 Grand Prix, and she had been counting down the days for weeks.

“Yes! I’m gonna watch you go super fast!” she whispered, as if the secret of speed needed to be protected.

The paddock was a blur of noise and activity, but Chloe, clutching her small, furry keychain, was an absolute angel. She held Lance’s hand tightly as they walked, nodding politely when people greeted them, and staying perfectly still while he spoke to engineers. Lance kept looking down, half-expecting a frantic wiggle or a demand for a snack, but she remained calm, absorbing the world around her with uncharacteristic focus.

Maybe she’s just overwhelmed, Lance thought, feeling a little pang of relief that he wouldn’t be distracted by a meltdown on a race morning. He gave her a final, tight hug by the garage, his heart swelling with affection.

“You’re going to stay with Grandpa Lawrence now, okay? Listen to everything he says. I’ll be back soon, and we can get ice cream!”

“Be careful, Daddy! And be fast!” Chloe chirped, planting a quick, sticky kiss on his cheek.

Lance handed her over to his father, Lawrence Stroll, who offered a firm, reassuring nod. “Go on, I’ve got her. She’s been a perfect little lady.”

Lance strapped himself into the AMR24, the roar of the crowd fading as his focus narrowed.

The moment Lance’s green car pulled out of the garage and onto the grid, a switch flipped inside Chloe. The polite, quiet observer was gone, replaced by a pint-sized whirlwind of boundless energy.

She tugged on Lawrence’s blazer. “Grandpa! Grandpa! Is Daddy going to use the DRS now? Can we go look at the big tires? They are so big!”

Lawrence, a man accustomed to leading boardrooms and overseeing multi-million dollar deals, found himself in a frantic chase.

“Slow down, Chloe! We need to stay behind the barrier!” he chuckled, trying to keep a firm grip on her hand.

“But I need to see the start! Look! They’re all getting ready! The red lights are on! Vroom! Vroooom!”

As the five red lights went out and the engines screamed into life, Chloe let out a sound that was half cheer and half battle cry. She began bouncing, a rapid, repetitive movement that made the ground seem to shake.

“Did you see him, Grandpa? He passed the blue car! He’s so good! You have to cheer louder! Come on, Lance! Woohoo!”

For the next hour and a half, Lawrence endured a relentless assault of unbridled enthusiasm. Chloe would run short laps around the hospitality area when they moved inside, pretending her arms were the wings of an F1 car. She invented a new game called "Tyre Change Dance," which involved spinning until she was dizzy and then demanding Lawrence spin her too.

He tried to keep an eye on the monitor, but Chloe kept pulling on his arm to ask highly technical, yet utterly adorable, questions about why the yellow car was slower than the green car.

“Grandpa, if Daddy drinks water, does his car drink water too?”

“No, sweetheart, the car uses—oh, look! Lance just pitted! He’s on the hards now.”

“What are hards? Are they hard like a rock? Can I bite one?”

Lawrence was sweating. He hadn't broken a sweat like this since he last ran a marathon—two decades ago. His composure was fraying, his tie was slightly askew, and he had a sticky juice stain on his crisp shirt from where Chloe had enthusiastically demonstrated a pit stop with her juice box.

As Lance crossed the finish line in a solid P8, Lawrence let out a breath of relief that had nothing to do with the race result.

“He did it! He finished!” Chloe cheered, finally collapsing onto a soft chair, completely drained.

Lawrence adjusted his jacket and smoothed his hair, looking at the tiny, exhausted little girl. She saved all that energy just for me, he thought with an exhausted, but genuine, smile.

He pulled out his phone and snapped a quick picture of her fast-asleep face. When Lance inevitably asked how she was, he’d simply reply, “A perfect angel, Lance. A perfect, little angel.” But he’d send the photo, too. He needed evidence for his own sanity.

Lance peeled off his sweaty balaclava and helmet in the cool sanctuary of the garage, feeling the satisfying exhaustion of a strong race. He spotted Lawrence waiting nearby, a faint, weary slump in his shoulders.

"P8, not bad, Dad," Lance said, grinning. "Where's the little terror? She was so well-behaved this morning, I was half-expecting her to be swinging from the rafters by now."

Lawrence managed a tired smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. "Oh, she was fine, son. A perfect angel, as I told you." He paused, then pulled out his phone and showed Lance the picture: Chloe, fast asleep, slumped deep in a plush chair, one small hand still clutching her Lance Stroll keychain.

"Looks like the excitement got the better of her," Lance chuckled, zooming in on the photo. "She was saving up all that energy, I guess."

"Saving up is an understatement," Lawrence muttered under his breath, adjusting his tie that Chloe had tried to use as a makeshift tow rope. "When you're a race car driver, you drive the car. When you're a grandfather at the track, you're the car."

"Wait, what did you just say?" Lance asked, arching an eyebrow.

Lawrence sighed, deciding honesty was the less exhausting route. "She was a magnificent, energetic, utterly delightful menace, Lance. She ran laps, demanded an explanation for every single tire compound change, tried to teach me the 'Tyre Change Dance,' and spilled juice on me demonstrating a successful pit-stop. I haven't had a proper heartbeat since the formation lap."

Lance burst out laughing, leaning against a work bench. "That’s my girl! The little racer spirit is finally showing!"

"Yes, well, now that the racer spirit has been expressed, perhaps we can institute a quiet time next Grand Prix," Lawrence suggested pointedly.

A few weeks later, they were at another race, and Chloe, now fully aware of the fun she'd had, was vibrating with anticipation.

"Daddy, I promise! I'll be the quiet angel for you, but when you go, I need a new game with Grandpa Lawrence! He has to keep up!" she announced at breakfast, already practicing her running form around the dining room table.

Lance leaned down conspiratorially. "How about this, peanut? If you are a calm, focused helper for me this morning, and you let Grandpa Lawrence watch at least five uninterrupted minutes of the race, I will let you sit in the real race car after the checkered flag."

Chloe gasped, her eyes going wider than the cockpit. "The real one? Not the show car? The one that goes VROOOM?"

"The one that goes VROOOM," Lance confirmed. "It's a deal, but you have to be so good for both of us."

Chloe nodded solemnly, sticking out her hand for a shake. "Deal. You just tell Grandpa Lawrence he needs to warm up his legs. We are going to play 'Find the Apex' this week. It involves running and pointing a lot."

Lance smiled, a mix of pride and sympathy. He had gotten his brief peace, and now his father had been officially nominated as the day's official, unwilling, co-pilot to Chloe's boundless imagination. Lawrence Stroll was about to discover that racing a Formula 1 car was physically demanding, but entertaining a five-year-old at the track was a true test of endurance.

Your heart sunk as you watched Lance be fussed over by the makeup artist, her hands repeatedly brushing through his hair. The smile that was on Lance’s face had you feeling uncomfortable, almost as if you were the one intruding on the two of them. 

There were people everywhere as they prepared for the launch of the new car, with you blending into the crowd, Lance had no idea that your eyes were on him, concentrating on getting himself ready. 

The look on your face though caught Chloe’s eye as she walked through, taking a seat beside you as you placed your hands against your bump, trying your best to stay as comfortable as you could. 

“Just ignore him,” Chloe told you, following your eyes to see where you were looking. 

You wanted to, but the sound of Lance’s laughter pulled you straight back in again. Chloe placed a hand on your shoulder, watching Lance too with a shake of her head, surprised by how close the makeup artist was. 

“She’s always been a little flirty,” Chloe tried to defend, not wanting you to worry. “She’d flirt with a fish if you put one in front of her, I swear.” 

You smiled appreciatively back at Chloe at her attempts to try and make you feel better. “I thought he’d do a bit of a better job of telling her to stop, he almost looks like he’s enjoying it with her.” 

Chloe didn’t quite know what to say as she saw the smile on her brother’s face, part of her wanted to march over and drag him away, but she knew she couldn’t leave your side too with you heavily pregnant. 

“He adores you, he’s probably just being nice,” Chloe whispered, nudging against your side. “Don’t overthink this too much, it’s not good for you right now getting stressed.” 

You wanted to relax, to enjoy watching Lance get ready, with all the excitement to launch the car for the new season, but now you were on the edge of your seat, terrified about what could happen over in the makeup chair. 

“Lance is too nice to tell anyone to get lost, sometimes I wish he’d grow a backbone.” 

Chloe couldn’t help but chuckle as you spoke, “I bet if I went over and told him that you were upset right now, he’d be absolutely mortified, he’s just oblivious to people and their feelings sometimes.” 

“Maybe I should just go, before I end up hurting myself.” 

You stood up from where you were sat, walking out of the room to the front reception of the centre. It was much quieter than the bustle of the makeup room, giving you a chance to sit back and relax and try to forget about the lingering thoughts of what was going on with Lance at the back of your mind. 

Once he was finished with hair and makeup, Lance stood up from the chair, his eyes immediately searching for you. When he found Chloe, he walked straight over to her, noticing the disapproving look that she wore as soon as she saw him coming over to her. 

“You’re an idiot,” she scolded, hitting against his arm. “You could’ve made it a little less obvious that you were getting your hair done by that stupid stylist.” 

“Where is she?” Lance frowned, letting go of a sigh. “I wasn’t enjoying it, but it’s just got to be done. I should probably go and find her and fix things, right?” 

“She’s pregnant Lance, she can’t help how she feels.” 

Lance rushed out of the room and around the centre in search of you. He flew through every room, eyes darting around for you. As he got to the front of the building, he finally found you sat in one of the office chairs, staring out of the window. 

He slowed down as he approached you, grabbing a chair and pulling it over to sit beside you. You didn’t react when you felt Lance’s presence beside you, continuing to look out of the window, pretending that he wasn’t there. 

“Honey,” Lance whispered, placing his hand against your shoulder to get your attention. 

Lance could tell from the look on your face that you were upset, your body was tense, your brows slightly furrowed, breathing much heavier than it usually was. 

“I’m sorry if what happened back there upset you,” Lance added, “I didn’t think anything of it, but I can imagine how it probably looked from the outside. She’s got a bit of a thing for my hair, she keeps fluffing it, I actually find it quite annoying.” 

Your eyes slowly turned to look in Lance’s direction, “are you just saying that?” 

Lance’s head shook as he offered you a reassuring smile. “Honestly, I can’t really stand her, but she’s got a job to do. I don’t know what else you think happens between the two of us, but I promise that that’s it.” 

“I probably look stupid, don’t I?” You sighed, resting your hand against your bump once again. “These stupid hormones leave me never quite sure how I should be feeling these days.” 

Lance nodded understandingly; he’d been on the receiving end of enough of your mood swings to know that you were struggling. One moment you were smiling, the next crying, never quite knowing how to feel. 

His hand moved up to rest over yours against your bump, brushing the pad of his thumb against the back of your hand. Admittedly, Lance knew that he wasn’t the smartest when it came to seeing other people’s intentions, never meaning to upset you like he did sometimes. 

“There’s no need to be jealous of her,” Lance told you, leaning across to kiss your cheek. “You know that you’re the only person for me, there’s never been anyone else.” 

Your head nodded as you tried to stay composed, feeling your eyes begin to well up. Your hand quickly reached up to your eyes, wiping underneath them, which Lance quickly caught onto. 

His expression softened as he watched you, pulling you closer into him. As a tear rolled down your cheek, Lance quickly caught it with the back of his hand, wiping it away. 

“Please don’t cry,” he softly smiled. 

“I don’t mean to.” 

“I know, hormones,” Lance chuckled, knowing exactly what you were like. “All you need to know is that I adore you, and that there’s no reason to be jealous. If you want, I can see if I can get someone else to do my hair and makeup for the shoots from now on.” 

Your head shook as you leaned against Lance’s shoulder. “It’s ridiculous that I’m even getting jealous about something like this, you’re at work, and I know that you’ll always be professional. I can’t wait to have this baby so I can just feel normal again, without constantly feeling like I’m some sort of whirlwind.” 

“It’s alright,” Lance reminded you, “you don’t need to justify anything or explain yourself; I know how you’re feeling, even though it might not seem so.” 

Your eyes flickered up to Lance, “would it be easier if I just went? You’ve got enough on your plate today without having to worry about me.” 

“No, I want you here,” Lance assured you, “you’re a part of the team here and I want you to see the car, you’ve heard me talk about it enough times.” 

“I don’t want to be in the way Lance.” 

He tightened his grip around you, “you’re not in the way, I want you here more than I want anyone else here. I’ll make sure you and Chloe are sat together; she’ll be able to look out for you.” 

“And I promise not to get jealous,” you teased, “although from now on, the only person who gets to touch your hair, is me.” 

“My hair is all yours my love.”

Lance Stroll x Reader

Summary: you celebrate Hanukkah with your boyfriend and his family for the first time

The warm glow of the chandelier fills the Strolls’ spacious dining room, casting soft golden light across the table laden with brisket, latkes, and an assortment of other dishes you can’t name but are determined to try.

Lance is at your side, leaning slightly back in his chair, one arm casually slung over the back of yours. His fingers tap absently at your shoulder as if to remind you he’s here. You appreciate it, considering the nerves humming through your body.

Chloe is mid-sentence, waving her fork with a flourish. “I’m just saying, it’s not Hanukkah without the family dreidel tournament. We’re doing it after dinner. Non-negotiable.”

Scotty laughs, his easy smile lighting up the room. “Is that because you win every year? You rig the rules.”

Chloe gasps. “Excuse me? I’m just naturally gifted at spinning a piece of wood. Don’t be jealous.”

Across the table, Lawrence clears his throat, his deep voice effortlessly cutting through the chatter. “It’s not about winning. It’s about tradition. And teaching new traditions to the ones joining us.” His gaze lands on you, warm but expectant.

You manage a smile. “I’m looking forward to it. Though, full disclosure, I’ve never played before.”

Lance grins, nudging you gently. “Don’t worry. It’s easy. You spin, you win, you make Chloe mad — just like the rest of us.”

Chloe throws a latke at him. “You wish. Y/N, you’re on my team.”
