By popular request, here is a sizable slice of the scotch pearls cake for all my valentines! This may be a bit verbose and quickly edited, but among forgivable sins, I suspect that is high on the list. This one shot is based on the end of Outlander episode eleven, “The Devil’s Mark” in which Claire is accused of witchcraft, tells Jamie that she’s from the future, and he decides to take her to a place where she can get back to her time ... if she chooses. Enjoy!
Since the age of sixteen, I’ve been used to riding across the country at grueling speeds, in any weather, with nary a short rest for many days, but whether because of the chaos at Crainsmuir, or the shock of discovering my husband came to me through the mists of time, by nightfall on our third day of travel, I am tired to my bones.
Peeta must be as weary as I am, and probably more, with his back still raw and striped with angry lashes, but he swings down from the horse and reaches up to help me down, ever a gentleman, though his brow creases in a wince as he raises his arms.
“I can do it,” I say, touching his shoulder to make him step back. “You’re wounded, mo chridhe.”
“I can bear it,” he says. The faint hint of a smile touches his lips. “You’re a regular Doctor Everdeen, Katniss. My back feels brand new.”
“A doctor?” I ask, as I get down from the saddle on somewhat wobbly legs and turn to unpack Lady, patting the mare’s neck with pride. She ran like a destrier today. She’ll deserve all the oat mash we can muster at Lallybroch. “Are women doctors where you come from?”
“Nurses,” Peeta says. “War nurses, some of them as good as doctors.”
“I only have my mother’s skills,” I confess, “and then only by half.”
He touches my face, tucking a strand of sweaty hair behind my ear. It’s odd, to feel so protected by this man, when I’ve spent my entire life protecting myself, when, as it turns out, he knows a pittance about the world I was born into, but I do. I feel safe beside him. Above him. Beneath him. In his arms, anywhere, be it in the sparse luxury of our bed, or here on the wild moors, under the stormy skies.
I reach for his hand, stronger and larger than mine, but calloused alike, and bring it to my lips, breathe in his scent. I want him to understand that I am here for him, that I believe him, unbelievable as his story is, that I’ll care for him, however I can.
And I know now how I can care for him best. Even though it may kill me.
Hi I see you post Outlander stuff from time to time and was curious if you would ever consider an Outlander/Everlark crossover story? Where Katniss is the Claire figure and Peeta is Jamie? Love your work btw esp Violent Delights
oh hi 🥰 and thank you! violent delights is my little vampire baby! (does that make it a threat to the Volturi? possibly) ~ as for Outlander, indeed l would! there’s a little vague concept I’ve been kicking around in the back of my WIP-inundated mind: it’s called Scotch Pearls and at the moment it’s actually Claire!Peeta and Jamie!Katniss but funnily enough, I’ve been thinking of switching it around because, as my dear sister Bethy tells me, “Cate, you always make Katniss the cool (read: magical, sexy, etc) one!” (I guess violent delights is the exception) But if you wanted to take a look I think I’ve got some stuff under #lander!lark and #scotch pearls ... it feels like a springtime kind of project, so we shall see ... it’s got such top tier crossover potential in my mind! 🏴 🏹 🥰
But if you take away the one thing that makes sense to me then I will die. Right here, with you, now. — How can you have me like this? — I will have you any way I can. Always.
Let me go! — I can’t!
(please also consider, Claire!Peeta)
Does it ever stop? The wanting you? Even when I've just left ye. I want you so much my chest feels tight and my fingers ache with wanting to touch ye again.
Instead of satisfying me, the kisses have the opposite effect, of make my need greater. I thought I was something of an expert on hunger, but this is an entirely new kind.
(please consider, Jamie!Katniss)
The scene where Claire is tending to Jamie’s gunshot wound in the first episode and she’s swearing up a storm and all the men are appalled is one of my fave scenes of any tv show ever 👏👏 would love to see your take on it in Scotch Pearls 🥰🥰
eeeeeeeeeek! I love that scene too ... oh I must ... I really must 😍😍😍 my crass queen 🙏🏻
So how Peeta is this outlanderpeeta ? Like, does he still have an abusive mother? Does he still bake?
all very good questions I have no concrete answers to ... I think I want him (Claire!Peeta at least) to be some sort of cartographer ... maybe a former strategist ... or also a baker? something that would make him of use to Katniss and the highlanders like Claire’s medical background does ... Jamie!Peeta would absolutely still bake ☺️ ... possibly either Peeta would have an abusive mother, though I don’t know how much she’d be mentioned ... 🤔🤔🤔 these are the thoughts! I need to ponder this ... ponder with me 😄
@ anyone interested in the Scotch Pearls universe ... what scene from the first book/series of Outlander would you like to see Scotch-Pearl-ed?
