Things with Eric were nice. They weren’t the kind of couple you might see in a Nicholas Sparks novel, but that was okay. It was perfectly clear that he was not ‘the one’ and if she was being honest, she knew he knew it as well. But as it was, she still very much enjoyed his company and the gentle way he cared for her. He was leaps and bounds better than Humperdinck and she very much enjoyed the dating rules of the twenty-first century. It was what had her decorating an old wicker basket with flowers and filling said floral basket with her best attempt at a surprise lunch. With a quick text to verify that he was at his restaurant, she checked her reflection one last time in the mirror before she made her way into town.
The basket swung from her forearm and there was a bounce in her step. She was getting her new life together and slowly but surely, she was beginning to feel like a whole person. She felt like Eric had something to do with that and she was still smiling as she pulled open the door to his restaurant. She spotted him almost immediately, her smile growing as their eyes met. She closed the distance between them, leaning in to chastely press her lips against his cheek in greeting before holding up her basket. “Thought I might surprise you with lunch and steal you away for a few minutes. What do you say?”
