Week 11

Hello!

So today marks the beginning of the end for my journey of designing for the Mobile Peninsula area. On Friday I will be presenting my last iteration of the design I have been working on so diligently for the last few months. I know that they say as a designer, your work is never really complete, so technically it is not the final iteration of this project.  But, nonetheless this semester is coming to an end and the last bits and pieces of the project have come together.

Last week I was able to produce some final decisions about things since I went back to Mobile. I was able to make decisions about what I wanted to happen on the other side of my boardwalk, how I wanted them to be constructed and how many would be appropriate for the space. After seeing how swampy the area was on the other side of the Dog River edge was, I found that instead of giving up and not doing anything with the land, I would instead create a nice extended boardwalk-like space that would have both an informational hut and ice cream shop on stilts. This new alternative would help encourage people to use the boardwalks and also act as a secret spot in my design idea. I was also able to develop my five, ten and fifty year perspectives so that they revealed my design in a lively way. By developing the perspectives I felt as though my ideas were coming to life and that those who are looking at my design would be able to feel what the space is meant to be like.

I’ve also reflected back on my design process and am developing a diagram that will help to convey how I came to the conclusion that I wanted to place a boardwalk in the design and the other amenities surrounding it. I know that from my mid-term it was stated that the development of using circular boardwalks was a great, yet large, undocumented leap that needed to be explained if even just a little diagram showing how that became a decision that I made.

In my final review I want to make sure that I make improvements from my mid-term in areas where I seem to be weakest. My ability to talk about my project thoroughly and in a manner that is paced and not rush would have to be at the top of my list. I struggled with talking for only four of the seven minutes allotted for the midterm and do not want it to seem like I am rushing my presentation or forgetting any important information about the design and the processes to get to the final point.

I hope all goes well for my classmates and me as we finish the last leg of this semester. I look forward to everyone’s presentation, and how far we have all come. It has been interesting seeing everyone’s development of this area and what their vision for the future of the Mobile Peninsula looks like!

Week 10

Hello!

This week’s blog will focus mainly on my trip back to good old Peninsula! My classmates and  I were allotted the time on Friday, April 8th to go back down to Mobile and test our site designs. I will first have to admit that it felt extremely different going back this second time around with my design in hand, rather than before, when I was doing more of a note taking and observation process. Nonetheless, I was excited to see the Peninsula face to face again and even speak with some of the members of the community about their thoughts my design as well as others.  

I traveled to the Peninsula early Friday morning and unfortunately, there weren’t many people out, seeing as the students were all in school and most adults in the community were at work. But, a classmate and I were able to track down one student from the BC Rain High School. The student’s name was Carmen; she was able to answer a couple of questions for each of us about our designs. When we brought up the idea for a boardwalk design, which is my main design focus for the site, she stated that she would enjoy something like that for members of the community as well as visitors. She believed that it would help people to really experience and enjoy all that the Dog River has to offer. Although, it seemed that she was a tad bit skeptical of the idea since it would cause a lot of traffic for the community within the vicinity of the access point. Overall, I was happy to hear that someone living in the Gulfdale Drive community would enjoy the design proposals that my classmate and I have been working diligently on, even if they are not actually going to be built.

Something very important that I took note of when walking the area again, is my account for how the scale and placement of certain existing roads or edges were. For instance, when I went to look at the river’s edge again, I noticed that on the other side of the river, where one of my circular boardwalk forms touches, the land seems very marshy and as if it may sink in if anyone stepped onto it. I need to research and find a solution to this issue, since I wanted to continue my design of the boardwalk over onto the other side. Another observation I made about with comparing my design thinking to my “ground-truth testing” was that the way I was imagining certain sizes of shops and roads is different than what I actually saw on Friday. I either thought that certain aspects of the existing conditions were larger or smaller than they actually are. Taking a step back and using this understanding of scale a more will only help me to strengthen my design so that I may continue to refine certain aspects of the site and village.

Week 3

Hello!

So for this week’s assignment everyone was asked to take their concept plan and develop it into a master plan. I have had a somewhat difficult time developing my concept plan these plans because of some of the existing conditions I observed. Professor Cormier made an important and valid point when she asked me what would make the people surrounding the area want to participate in the amenities that I wanted to add to The Peninsula. Some of these amenities that I want to implement included a YMCA, teaching farm, improved parks, and a library. I took the idea of these spaces from the personal experiences of people I know who grew up in a similar area. These types of spaces help to encourage the younger generation to develop in a structured and healthy environment as opposed to becoming involved in activities that would not help them to grow.

As you can tell, my focus is on creating a community that caters to the needs of the generation emerging from the surrounding elementary and high schools. Although, after reading through some of the goals for the Mobile area their priorities seem to differ in what they range as important in comparison to my own. Some of their plans to improve Mobile are to create both land and water based visitor experiences, improve the transportation networks, develop the community heritage and improve equity within these communities. I had been so focused on the fact that I wanted to improve the lives of the youth in the community that I basically left out the fact that there is an entire community of people in varying ages and demographics that must also be taken into consideration in this renovation.

From this insight I have shifted my master plan slightly to accommodate these necessary developments. I want to improve the circulation of traffic in The Peninsula area so that it flows at a steady rate and also allows for those traveling by foot or bike to feel inclusive and protected. I’m also paying more attention to the ecological areas of the site. It rains at about sixty-four inches per year in Mobile, so finding a place for the rain to collect and create a habitat for some of the native species in the Mobile area as well as unique moments in the landscape for people to observe and enjoy is important. Also, reaching beyond my plans to have a library, YMCA and teaching farm, I think that nestling these amenities alongside some other commercial shops will create more attraction. By placing an ice cream shop and library alongside one another could change how a person’s routine changes. For instance, child could go to the library and get all of his or her work done on the computers provided and then afterwards be rewarded with an ice cream cone. It’s the little moments and instances like this for the specific user groups that are helping me to develop this master plan.
