Landscape Institute North East 2019 AGM
This April, Emily Russell, Senior Landscape Architect in our Newcastle office, was confirmed as Chair of the Landscape Institute North East (LINE) branch for a second year running. Emily presented this year’s AGM, at which Dan Cook, the CEO of the Landscape Institute attended to give an update from head office. Laura Fogg, Landscape Architect in the Newcastle office, also did a short presentation on our recently completed extension to the Rising Sun Country Park in North Tyneside. A great night was had by all.

New Moxy hotel openings
Fairhurst are pleased to announce the opening of two Moxy hotels in Glasgow and at Edinburgh Airport. Whilst our Glasgow office have been supporting the client, Vastint, with engineering services including structural, civil, geo-environmental and water, our Newcastle office has provided landscape architecture services on the two above mentioned hotels, as well as many others across the country.
Moxy Edinburgh is located next to the city’s airport and opened in January of this year, the first development as part of a wider masterplan surrounding the airport. The design approach for the external space includes avenue tree planting along the main approach to the airport with footpath connections linking to public transport provision. Ornamental planting to the hotel frontage includes seasonal pops of colour, referencing the signature lighting of the Moxy signage and brand.
Moxy Glasgow is located in the heart of the city centre, in Glasgow’s Merchant City and opened in November last year. The design offers high quality design using granite paving supplied by Charcon, complementing the hotel and the surrounding Glasgow Collegelands, as well as Cor-ten steel street furniture including planters and seating. Fairhurst will be continuing their work with Vastint and Clark Contracts on upcoming Moxy hotel projects.

What We Do: Masterplanning and Residential Design
The Yellow Room at Fairhurst has an extensive experience and skill base. Our landscape and urban design team creates high quality, cost effective schemes of varying scales and complexity. Fairhurst seeks to create a ‘sense of place’, by evaluating, creating, enhancing, restoring. We incorporate innovative, imaginative designs holistically, balancing functionality, demands of contemporary living and environmental sustainability.
We have worked with landowners, Local Authorities, and government agencies. These projects were driven by adding values through environmental, engineering, social, economic, and cultural solutions. Projects include:
The A19 Corridor Masterplan, North Tyneside
Shire Park Tesco HQ, Welwyn Garden City
The Green Corridor Masterplan, Durham
…and many more.
The document covers our design strategies to detailed masterplanning and public realm design that incorporates art and sculpture to create a sense of arrival and place, adding value to the site. We work with a range of public art consultants and artists on behalf of both public and private clients. Our projects range from major infrastructural schemes to pocket parks and gardens. Some of our public realm projects include:
Sheraton Park Student Accommodation
Chapelton, Elswick
Acklam Hall
Vigo Lane, Chester-le Street
…and many more.

Morcom Road Consultation
Fairhurst are working on behalf of Central Bedfordshire Council to design and deliver greenspace improvements to Morcom Road Flats, Dunstable. Additional to these works, we are proposing to reuse the existing drying areas that are found in each block of flats.
We have proposed several options and would like to hear your feedback on these ideas.
If you would like to provide comment, please complete this short anonymous questionnaire that can help us develop the design at Morcom Road.
Take the survey here.
The deadline for providing feedback via the questionnaire will be 11:45pm on Saturday the 25th of March. Fairhurst and Central Bedfordshire Council will use the feedback received to further the design proposals.

November 2017
Landscape team undertaking landscape and visual assessment works for the A9 dualling project in Scotland. Job well done in the snowy scenery!
Landscape Institute Guests and LINE Pre-Christmas event
The Landscape Institute’s Dan (CEO) and Rachel (Head of Business Development) visited The Yellow Room at Fairhurst Newcastle on the 29th of November to hear about the scope of our works and what we have achieved. We are pleased to hear positive feedbacks from their visit to the office.
Later that evening, the team enjoyed the Pre-Christmas event organised by the Landscape Institute North East (LINE) at the Tyneside Cinema. Helvetica was an interesting documentary and would highly recommend all those interested in graphic design to watch it! The film was very informative and may have persuaded us to use Helvetica in our future documents. The social brought an opportunity to meet old and new friends. Everyone at the Yellow Room would like to thank LINE for organising and Dan and Rachel for taking the time to visit us in Newcastle. We would be happy to have them in the office again and look forward to engaging further with the institute.
Welcome!
A warm welcome to all the new graduates and students at the Newcastle Office!

Sheraton Park Community Garden, Landscape Design
The Yellow Room have been working alongside Alumno Developments and Keir on the Sheraton Park Student Accommodation Scheme, to design the external works and create a community parkland within the heart of the scheme. Emily and Steve attended the event on the 8th September to celebrate the opening of the site and see the finished result.
Our proposals create a framework to exhibit an International Sculpture Garden that reflects the idea of pilgrimage, the original landscape concept a contemporary interpretation of an Edwardian era garden, influenced by the architectural style of the buildings. It incorporates the two main principles of Edwardian landscape design; formal gardens with strong geometry, symmetry and to recreate semi-wild parkland by capturing ‘the romance of the countryside within the confines of the urban and suburban landscape’. The surrounding landscape includes a range of features from formal hedges, grassland areas, ornamental planting beds and retention of existing trees. Fairhurst also helped to coordinate and design the plinths for the artwork and curved seating wall, the focal point within the parkland setting. These were created by local manufacturers Bespoke Concrete.
The Yellow Room are proud to have been a part of this fantastic project over the last 6 years and look forward to working alongside all parties again in the future.
Craghead Environmental Improvement
The Craghead regeneration scheme was developed by Fairhurst’s Yellow Room studio in close collaboration with the local residents through community engagements and workshops. The masterplan was designed to integrate public open space and artwork within an improved streetscape, providing continuity of materials and boundary treatments as well as creation of newly designated off- street parking.
Following the environmental improvements, the number of vacant properties within the development has significantly reduced, while house prices have increased, and new housing development has subsequently been ‘built out’ adjacent to the scheme. The success of the scheme was recognised by an RTPI Regional Award. The project has set a precedent for Durham County Council, who have plans to roll out similar projects within the Stanley area.
Leeming Bar
Fairhurst was originally instructed to undertake an LVIA and Outline Landscape Masterplan on an existing A-road service station, to go forward for planning and public inquiry in a bid to be upgraded to becoming an MSA (Motorway Service Area).
The site is currently a motorway service station we were instructed to undertake a detailed transport assessment and a Flood Risk Assessment whilst also creating a master plan. The current scheme looks to retain the Hotel, toilet block, McDonald’s and PFS but are looking to introduce a new purpose amenity building to replace the current manager’s property. We are hoping to create a unique environment that allows visitors, employees and the local community to enjoy this area.
Marley Hill Planning Approval
The Yellow Room at Fairhurst has been working on behalf of Buckley Burnett to support the planning application for the conversion of the former Marley Hill Primary School site in the Marley Hill Conservation Area, Gateshead. We are pleased to say that the proposal has been granted full planning permission!
The Yellow Room will continue to work with Buckley Burnett to develop the landscape proposals and prepare a detailed soft landscape design for the site in order to satisfy planning conditions. This has been a great project to work on and we very much look forward to continuing to work alongside Buckley Burnett for Marley Hill and future projects.
Our involvement to date has involved carrying out a site analysis and Landscape and Visual Assessment with Green Belt and Conservation Area commentary of the proposed development and supported the application with a Landscape Masterplan. The housing layout aims to reflect the historic rows of terraces within Marley Hill, with a landscape scheme that enhances the development with a variety of ground cover, ornamental and native planting taking into consideration existing trees and the sensitive setting of the Conservation Area. The proposed planting provides an appropriate level of screening for onlookers whilst retaining key open views into the surrounding wider landscape.
