reading middle english makes it painfully clear why this bastard gremlin language is such a fucking mess, I present to you:

1. 5 different spellings of “Arthur”: ARTURE [line 7], ARTHOWRE [line 14], ARTHOUR [line 54], ARTHURE [line 110], and then we kind of fall in line behind ARTHOURE [line 456 on], but STILL

2. “Fern”: FERNE [line 25] or FERON [line 44]

3. “Foul”: FOWLNESSE [line 244], FOULLE [line 301], FOWLYST [line 370], FOULE [line 523], FOWLLE [line 524]

4. and, I cannot emphasize this enough, INOWGHE as “enough”

Was going trough my extra volume 13 (acidently bought it twice) for colagge material and was reminded of Izukus official hero name in Finnish, i know i shouldnt laugh but pfffft.

Ah, why couldnt they have just kept it as Deku.

Im fluent in 3 languages, Swedish, Finnish and English. The only trade of for this knowledge is that i sometimes forget simple words in the language i have used the least for a while.

k, so this is gonna be a bit different, just me rambling really. so take anything i say in this post with a pinch of salt. (also this got kinda long so sorry about that)

I have been meaning to read the finnish translation of mha ever since the first two volumes gott into stores, but have been putting it of for quite a while ( i still continued to buy the volumes each month so that i wont need to order them later) and now we are up to volume 10, so i thought “why not read until the end of season 2 so i can get back into the anime.” ah i was a fool, i literally ended up opening and then promptly closing the volume after just reading the first page.

Because i just, laughed, theres two culprits for this and that is the finnish translation of Izukus nickname “deku” and the word Quirk. Why did i laugh when i read those two words specifically? Well you see, the finnish translation of the word Quirk is Oiku, wich my brain autocorrects into Muikku ( a fish), i have talked about this in a past ask HERE , if you want to know a little bit more about that.

Now, let's talk about Deku, or rather the translation of Deku because yeah, they translated that, into what you may ask, well... its Pölkky. A shorthend version of the insult Pölkkypää, which when directly translated basically means Blockhead (or rather Blocky, if we are gonna be accurate).

After realizing this was gonna be the case throughout the manga, i kinda skipped until the point where the class chose they're pro hero names, all the other names are the same as the english translation, EXCEPT FOR IZUKU, whos finnish oficial hero name is, Pölkky.

Now this would all be fine and dandy, if it weren't for the fact that it makes me laugh, and it's all because i keep getting THIS mental image whenever i read Izuku getting referred to as Pölkky.

I havent read the finnish translation of bnha but i already know that i would die reading it. Oikku and pölkky? Feels so weird to think that they got translated like that. They just feel wrong even when they are accurate. But it also kinda gives a lil perspective to what deku sounds like to a japanese person. How did they even explain izu choosing pölkky as a hero name? Original has uraraka comparing it to dekiru/you can do it but i just cant see how that would work in finnish.

I know right?! This is mostly also a big reason why i generally don't read finnish translated manga if i have been exposed to the english version or an anime, since there are certain words that just, sounds so off when translated even if the translation is technically correct. Also i am more than happy to report that Urarakas reasoning for liking Izukus nickname is still the same as in the english translation aka “it has good, you can do it energies.”, same happens when they choose the hero names, its basically the same as the english translation, no extra explanation, so why on earth did they feel the need to translate the nickname? It works way better in the english translation because they didn't do that, and in the original it has the word play going on, but here?! it just does not work, and its Great.

"But, Pölkky has some kind of energetic, you can do it vibes!"

"Now i am a you can do it! Kind of blockhead!"

One day i will muster up the strenght to read trough the finnish translation (curently we have 11 volumes) and not laugh. But today aint the day.

Hey how are you doing I forgot to ask

Im good, i recently bought the first two manga books for mha now that they are translated and in stores…. though im having a hard time stopping myself from laughing whenever they say the word quirk, since the word they use is very similar too the name of a fish. so now i just keep thinking about everyone throwing fish around instead of using they’re quirks.    

god i love language sometimes.
