Random retainer facts

Clanne and Framme inherited their positions and were trained to fulfill this purpose since a young age

The Firene retainers were all chosen by Ève, but she made this choice partially based on preexisting connections to Alfred and Céline

Diamant and Alcryst both have one conventional and non-conventional retainer. Lapis and Jade earned their role the Brodian way. Diamant picked Amber and Citrinne volunteered

Zelkov and Kagetsu were assigned to Ivy which is why she didn't trust them at first. Goldmary and Rosado aren't official retainers but chose to behave as such for Hortensia

All the Solm retainers were hand-picked directly by Timerra and Fogado because it is the Queendom of Freedom. Of course they would get to make the choice themselves

FE ENGAGE REDESIGNS PT.2 : BRODIA

PART 1: FIRENE - PART 2: BRODIA I've learned, I'm frontloading with artwork. And yes i will be getting to non-royals-and-retainers eventually!

Okay so when I did my initial sit down and tried to write up, "What is Brodia" from memory, I completely forgot they were supposed to be a mining economy. I wrote, "war, alpacas?, Wealth?" and kind of decided to push it into a bit more of a livestock/cattle economy to start building up a continental circle-of-life religion and also to incorporate the two farmers in this set of six which otherwise feel a bit random.

DIAMANT AND ALCRYST

Diamant, I have heard, gets benched a lot. Poor guy. Too many characters in this game anyway but I'm not here to fix that issue, Im just trying to remove some visual clutter. Ive removed his cape, approximately four belts, and an assload of spikey armour which was probably ruining his big cape anyway. He still has intense goth armour with fur and crazy patterns, hes just a bit easier to look at. Alcryst was hard because i like him as a character but babygirl what the fuck are you wearing. I get that he's from warplace but you are an archer what is all this plate armour for??? I tried a few designs to attempt to keep the big poofy neck stuff, but it just all seemed very unrealistic for archery (i know, who cares). Instead I gave his sleeves a bit of extra poof, transformed his waistcoat into a fancy quilted gambeson, and took some notes out of SoV's book and gave him one simple piece of shoulder armour and an archer's glove. He still gets to wear cool goth boots but im suggesting a more leather-like texture than plate metal.

AMBER AND JADE

Amber is interesting because i actually kinda fw his fit like i would totally wear it, but i am so not convinced that he would, yfm? So Im making him yeehaw. His armorboots (which would totally hurt his horse) are transformed into goth cowboy boots with the furs and spurs. He's getting chaps. He gets a bolo tie to replace the cravat (partially inspired by alcryst's casual bolo) and to show my goodwill after removing so many capes, he gets an alpaca wool cape/poncho. Then i said fuck it lets give him a hat too. And before anyone tells me alpaca farmers dont dress like this im going to stop you right there because you clearly have never met an american farmer of any variety (they all want to be cowboys). Jade is conceptually easy because ive been removing spikey black armor off of everyone, and now i have an armored unit. Bro just put the spiky black armor on her!! Armored units get so left behind design wise but then everyone else gets overdesigned boots and pauldrons like come on. Anyways i didnt give her 110% here because I'd really have to start from 0 and I'm not that interested in drawing a full suit of spikey black armour, but its what she deserves. I think i keep swapping between US/UK spellings please bear with me i am not going back to fix that

CITRINNE AND LAPIS

Citrinne is where i remembered that the mining economy was supposed to be a thing lol. My main gripe with her design is that shes supposed to be really wealthy but all of her jewelry and tat is like, leather and feathers which makes no sense to me?? it should all be gold. This bitch wealthy asf! I removed some visual clutter and replaced it with a corset, which could easily be adapted to an even wealthier looking piece but i was just not that interested in fleshing her out that much. I was trying to think like, "whats high fashion in brodia?" and then i was like, "i dont really feel like drawing her in an armored pantsuit" But i bet that would go hard as hell. Lapis just does not look like the character they want her to be. In her concept art, so much of the character of shy farm girl is portrayed through her shy posture, but in a game with stock behaviours it just doesnt cut it. I dont really know why she looks like Pyra just learned how to transform into a motorcycle and back into a girlsword again. So instead i have... removed the cape (booo), given her a longer, prairie style skirt, and made the top armor appear more like its standard-issue brodian royal armor that she just put on top of her farmstyle fashion. She aint got money to provide herself with that! The royal army would have outfitted her with the basics. I think theres more to go if you really wanted to push that design, but again, I'm not the queen of spiky armor. In my sketch you can see i tried to reference King Morion and Jade in the armor styling but i didnt really feel the need to render it to illustrate the point. Woaw... Anyway those are my thoughts! YIPPEE! Next up is Elusia :3
