The amazing header art is by @endsofthearth! Icon art is by me.

Some pride-themed Lapis/Citrinne for @freezing-turtle for the @feartscuffle, fittingly done during the engage ship week hosted at @daydreamingsommie!
Posted for the Shippers Engage Week run by @daydreamingsommie. I found this pair inspiring; I definitely think they'd have a lot to talk about, as you'll see!
C
Lapis: There she is. She’s so refined…she must be as highborn as Citrinne. If I can just copy her mannerisms, then—
Panette: You there.
Lapis: Ah!
Panette: You are one of the Brodian retainers, are you not? Is there a reason you were skulking about?
Lapis: Skulking? Me? N-never.
Panette: Solm and Brodia may be allied for the time being, but should you have any intent of harming the boss—
Lapis: The boss?
Panette: Why are you playing the part of a fool? I mean Princess Timerra, of course.
Lapis: So in Solm, a princess is called a boss…gotcha!
Panette: What are you on about?
Lapis: Sorry for the misunderstanding. I was just working up the nerve to approach you. You see, I uh, I know all about Brodian nobility, of course. But we don’t get a lot of folks—er, ambassadors from Solm in Brodia, so I figured I oughta learn about Solmic etiquette.
Panette: …I see. I thought I sensed something amiss.
Lapis: Nothing amiss here, not one miss! Just me, Miss Lapis. Heh…heh…
Panette: No, Miss Lapis, there are two things amiss here. You…and me.
Lapis: Huh…?
Panette: You see, I come from a rough background. I have worked hard to become a retainer worth of serving the princess. That is why it is child’s play to recognize a fellow bluffer.
Lapis: Oh! You, too? But you’re so elegant!
Panette: Why, thank you! If you would still like to learn of Solmic etiquette, I can tell you all I know. A charming young woman such as yourself should have no trouble learning.
Lapis: Gosh, I don’t know about that, but I’ll happily take you up on it!
B
Panette: Hello there, Miss Lapis. What has you scrounging around on the ground at such an early hour?
Lapis: Ah! …Oh, it’s just you, Panette.
Panette: What have I done to earn such an unenthused greeting?
Lapis: No, I’m sorry! I just mean that you already know about my background. Y’see, I was just foraging. Or at least, I was trying to.
Panette: Foraging?
Lapis: Yeah, for any edible plants I could cook up. Our food stores are drying up in this desert—literally. I wanted to help, even if just a bit. But unless someone’s got an appetite for sand, there’s nothing out here.
Panette: What hogwash!
Lapis: O-oh, well, I guess it’s a silly thing for me to be doing when I should be guarding Prince Alcryst…
Panette: No, feeding others is a fine pursuit. Why, if Princess Timerra were here, I’m sure she would be happy to join us.
Lapis: The…the princess?
Panette: Alas, my inferior eyes will have to be your guide. There is an abundance of edible plant life in the desert. For example, this variety of cactus would make a fine meal.
Lapis: You can eat a cactus? But they’re so prickly…
Panette: They require careful handling, of course, but I think you’ll be pleased by the results.
Lapis: Heehee…you’re saying they’re tough, but it’s worth getting them to open up, huh?
Panette: Just what is so amusing?
Lapis: Nothing. Say, you’ve already taught me about etiquette, and now I’m the one learning about plants for once. I’ve got to return the favor somehow. Oh, I know! You’ve got first bids on my next batch of taters.
Panette: Taters…?
Lapis: My parents grow the best potatoes in all of Brodia. In all the world, probably. I don’t think I’ll be able to part with all of them, but I’ll save the best ones for you.
Panette: That is…quite generous. Your parents, you say? Are you close?
Lapis: Close as can be! I mean, I’m on the other side of the world…digging around in the sand…but I’m sure they’re as proud of me as I am of them.
Panette: …
Lapis: You get what I mean, right? Since you’re from a village, too. I bet even Solm’s retainers don’t get to go home much.
Panette: I beg your pardon.
Lapis: Panette?
Panette: I have a prior engagement. I am sure someone as skilled with a blade as yourself can survive an encounter with a cactus on your own.
Lapis: Huh? Hold up, Panette! What was that about?
A
Panette: Miss Lapis.
Lapis: Hey, Panette! Y’know, you can just call me—
Panette: I owe you an apology.
Lapis: Hm?
Panette: When last we met, I left most impolitely. It was unbecoming of a retainer of Solm.
Lapis: You don’t have to worry about all that around me. Can I ask what the matter was, though? I didn’t make you mad, did I?
Panette: My anger was not directed at you. You see, I did not come from a loving home. If I were to find my parents, I do not know if they would be proud of me…but I know they have given me nothing to be proud of.
Lapis: O-oh. You…don’t know where they are, then?
Panette: No. Though, at the time, it was I who had run off. In search of an outlet for my rage, I found targets it would be acceptable to mete out justice to. My knowledge of how to survive—how to fight and forage alike—comes from this dark period.
Lapis: Panette…
Panette: Forgive me. I should not have burdened you with such dreary things.
Lapis: No, I’m the one who’s sorry! I started mouthing off, just ‘cause we had some things in common. I’m sorry I brought up such bad memories.
Panette: You meant no harm. In fact, I have been curious to try these world-class ‘taters.’
Lapis: Then you’re in for a treat! I’ll cook’em up right, to repay you for being so helpful.
Panette: I shall look forward to it!
Lapis: Say, Panette…it’s your parents’ loss, you know.
Panette: Indeed. Wherever they are, I am sure they don’t have such fine taters.
Lapis: Not that. Well, that too. But whatever they’d say, I think you have plenty to be proud of. I mean, look at you! A personal retainer to the princess! You’re brawny, brainy, and beau—er, beartiful!
Panette: Beartiful?
Lapis: It’s, uh, what we call folks who could out-run a bear back home!
Panette: I see! I would love to learn more of your hometown.
Lapis: Are you sure? I don’t want to bring up more bad memories.
Panette: It is all right. I may never be rid of my bad memories, but I’ve accumulated many that I’m proud of. For instance, earning the regard of one of Brodia’s finest retainers.
Lapis: Gosh! In that case, I’d be happy to share some of my stories. I just hope I don’t talk your ear off.
Panette: Never fear, dear Lapis. For you, my ear is firmly affixed.
The law is only as good at its practitioners. It can be a shield that keeps the people safe from harm, or a sword wielded to wound them. Just one among many of the law’s great contradictions.

For Engage Month Day 6 (Lythos), I wanted to share my nonbinary Alear design. ❤️💙 I love the interpretation of Alear's story as a trans allegory and was curious what a combination of their canon designs would look like (+a couple extra details for fun). This is just a quick mockup, but if anyone wants to use it as inspiration for their own design/art at all, then feel free.
