Alfred's response to his illness is honestly more realistic than people give him credit for
This isn't really something most people would understand because most people don't experience this, but there's a really pervasive way how a diagnosis becomes your one character trait
While it is a part of your life, it's still only one part. There's still the rest of you, but sometimes people don't see that
You can live life, enjoy hobbies, work hard for a goal like everyone else, but then deal with people boiling your entire character down to one thing. Almost like they can't fathom that you might actually have something else in your life that exists outside of the illness
I do see people refer to Alfred's choice to avoid talking about it as him being in denial, but it's more like defiance. He says it himself. He refuses to be seen as a weak prince and wants to be remembered for being happy, dependable, and strong
He's probably used to people viewing this one part of his life as his entire life and wants people to care more about seeing the rest of it
Just a different perspective to consider here

Writing advice: Virtues can represent anything if you're creative enough
Firene has the virtue of abundance. From there, the Firenese characters do have a recurring theme of gratitude and self-sufficiency. They're used to not needing help and are content to just enjoying themselves. But there's also a level of complacency here, because if everything is amazing all the time, you might not feel the need to grow which means you can stagnate or fall behind a little
Brodia's might is straightforward. Everyone is pushed to find their strength, but there appears to be confusion between being powerful and being strong. Most characters have some kind of self-esteem issues related to not being strong enough. And of course, we have Diamant showcasing this trait by having the strength to refuse war and choose peace instead
Elusia's virtue of knowledge is less about being scholarly and more about just learning. Learning about life, interests, and other people as well as yourself. Growth is learning. Learning is growth. It's not about everything you already know. It's about everything you don't know yet and the journey to understand everything beyond your horizons
Solm represents freedom in a unique way. Their freedom isn't about acting without burdens, but picking the burden to bear. Timerra chooses to embrace her path as queen. Fogado chooses to defend Solm as a sentinel. Merrin chooses to be a heroic knight. Pandreo chooses to guide the lost through his church. All these choices come with responsibilities. Part of their freedom was actually to give up some freedoms to care for others
This is what I like about virtues. Even the most basic definition of these words have a lot of range to how they can be interpreted and can build up nations in wildly different ways depending on what you wanna do with it
