Having thoughts on senior year lardorans…

Lardo spends all of the summer before, thinking she and Shitty are going to fall in love. And they try, they try so hard. But neither of them are happy, and it’s ruining their friendship, and somewhere along the line it becomes clear that they’re trying to force something that just isn’t there.

It sucks. And Lardo never told anyone about she and Shitty and part of her wonders if maybe it’s because she knew it wasn’t going to work out. So the two of them decide to give each other some distance because they’re still each other’s person and they still want to be friends but they both need a little time.

But this happens around the time Jack and Bitty come out, and Lardo is just so jealous. She’s happy for them, obviously, but they’re so in love in the sort of “we’re it for each other” way, and she’s jealous because she was supposed to be getting that.

And one day Ransom notices that something is up and asks, “Hey are you ok?” She breaks down and just tells him everything. When she’s done Ransom is quiet for a while and then admits, “March and I broke up.” Lardo’s confused a second before Ransom says, “It was fun, I liked her but… I wanted more.” And then she gets it. They both want more than what they were getting.

It makes them closer. They find themselves spending more time, just the two of them, because they can be jealous of Jack and Bitty without anyone calling them petty, because that really isn’t it. They are genuinely happy for them and glad the two of them are happy, but it’s also hard sometimes to see people get what you so badly want.

Spring semester goes on, and Lardo starts spending time in Cambridge again, but this time she actually has fun. Because it’s Lardo and Shitty like they used to be, without the pressure or expectations they’d been putting on their relationship in the fall.

But while things are getting better for Lardo, they’re getting worse for Ransom. As med school gets closer he’s spending more and more time in coral reef mode, until one night Lardo asks, “What if you didn’t go to med school?”

He stumbles through an answer about how he has to, something about his parents and his sister and how he’s good at it. And then she tells him a story she hasn’t told anyone at Samwell before: a story about a girl who was always good at math, a girl who everyone thought was going to be an engineer. Ransom’s confused, because he’s pretty sure Lardo never took a single math class in college. “I was good at it, and it made my parents proud, but it didn’t make me feel alive.” And then she asks him, “What makes you feel alive?”

The answer isn’t medicine or science or school, because all of those sometimes make him feel like he’s dying, so he says, “Hockey, my friends, Holster, Haus parties… You.”

He look her right in the eyes when he says it and she knows what it means. She’s been feeling it too. So she leans in to kiss him.

She nervous, of course she is, she doesn’t want to ruin another friendship by trying to make it something more. But when the kiss it’s, easy, and it’s good, and fuck, he makes her feel alive too.

They don’t tell anyone at first, not by some spoken agreement but just it’s nice to have it just be them for a little while. (And it’s nice to not get fined for making out at kegsters since that’s something they did before).

But one day they’re lying together in Lardo’s room and Ransom says, “I think I need to tell Holster.” Lardo nods, it’s time. “I should tell Shitty too, before Holster tells everyone.”

She’s nervous to tell him, but it turns out she shouldn’t have worried. She tells him and he nods. “You’re good together?” Shitty asks, and Lardo nods, even though she feels like an asshole. He just smiles, even if it looks a little sad. “I’m happy you’re happy,” he says and that’s the end of it, they’re good.

Things are great for them for a little while. The team doesn’t make it that far which is sad, but they throw a party for both of their birthdays and afterwards, when it’s just them, Ransom kisses her like it means those words that neither of them have quite said yet.

But then Ransom starts talking about moving in with Holster since they’ve decided to go into consulting together. She’s happy for him, but all at once Lardo realizes she doesn’t know where she fits into Ransom’s post-grad life.

But a couple weeks later Ransom asks her, “You and Shitty are good, right? He’s actually ok that we’re together?” Lardo nods. And then he asks, “Holster and I were talking, and I guess he’s been talking to Shitty, so maybe all four of us could rent a house in Boston together when we graduate?”

He looks nervous, but hopeful when he says it, and Lardo wonders why she was ever worried about him leaving. They both laugh when Holster jokes about them moving in together after only a few months, because they’re excited and happy and have been living together the whole time.

Later that night, when he’s smiling up at her in her bed, she manages to push aside all her fears and say those words.

He says them back.

The year rolls to a close and Lardo feels better than she would have anticipated in November.

She sits on Holster’s shoulder at Spring C and it makes her tall enough to kiss Ransom on the forehead, which she does, repeatedly. Lardo still has no idea what she’s doing with her life, but she’s happy and in love, and she’s pretty sure things will work out ok.

when ransom starts dating bitty and lardo, it kind of just happens. like it starts with the three of them hanging out maybe during a snowstorm, then bitty asks if he and lardo could kiss him. ransom, who was worried that his feelings for the both of them would affect their friendship, is relieved that they feel the same way about him. so he kisses them and it makes him feel warm and happy, and later they end up cuddling with ransom being in the middle. the next morning they have breakfast together and talk about this new open relationship and plan different kinds of dates they can go on.

ransom: you hooked up with jack a week after meeting him and then it took 3 full years of hating each other to even talk about it. lardo and i had an adult conversation when we realized we liked each other and now i have a date friday night. we are not the same

their first time hooking up was actually freshman year

it wasn’t a big deal! they lived in the same dorm it was the beginning of the year, and they were walking home after getting hazed and were drunk off their asses and had just spent a few hours looking at each other nearly naked for a few hours and it just kinda happened okay?

it was awkward for a few weeks during practice bc lardo wanted boundaries as the manager and rans realized shitty had it Bad for her

p quickly tho they both just agreed to ignore it and became bros and it was just like. one of those funny things that happened freshman year 

they don’t actually become like. a thing until their senior year after rans takes an art class she’s TA’ing and they spend more time together and just. yeah.

anyway rans thinks it’s super hot when she beats him at pong and holster gets supes pissed abt this bc it’s an unfair advantage

it’s not like it matters she would crush them anyways but !!!! this is the boy who gets into shouting matches over catan he is Competitive

sometimes he likes to lift her up when w like a hug or just when he’s teasing on the quad but lardo gets really annoyed by this and he stops

she does however take the chance to sit on his shoulders literally any chance she gets (chicken fights w bitty + holster are legendary)

they have a very strict no-PDA rule for themselves both bc neither are super into it and to set an example for fines

this rule is flagrantly broken at almost every kegster however bc. look my girlfriend manages to still be hot while she’s doing a kegstand and u want me to just not kiss her????? i don’t understand???????

when ransom is freaking out over a test or med school applications or whatever yeah holster gets the ecosystem but part of that is knowing when to text lardo

she shows up w a cup of hot chocolate and actually manages to make him laugh and. she makes things quiet.

ransom returns the favor when lardo’s staying at the studio until 4am trying to finish a piece bc it just does not Look Right!!! and telling her that she needs to sleep. bc creativity will not work if her brain is broken

tater visits campus and lardo 1. is super awesome and gets his cell and 2. acts as a buffer to introduce him to ransom without making ransom explode

rans almost proposes right fucking there bc. he has a picture with alexei mashkov!! alexei mashkov knows his name!!!!!!! alexei mashkov thinks his girlfriend is scary and told ransom he’s a lucky man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i’m not saying jenny and mandy had something to do w them finally getting Together together but. hm.
