Does anyone remember Grandma Moses these days? Anna Mary Robertson Moses, born in 1860 in Eaglebridge, NY, took up painting at age 77. Her American primitive paintings are now considered some of the finest. Here she stands with some of her work at the Women's International Exposition at Madison Square Garden on November 14, 1955.

Above: The famous Vanderbilt Chateau at 57th St. & Fifth Avenue being torn down in 1926. Bergdorf Goodman was built in its stead.
Below, the mansion as it looked in 1908. It had been built in 1893 and modeled after the Chateau de Blois in France. It boasted 130 rooms and its walls were covered with paintings by Corot, Millais, Rousseau, Turner, Greuze, and Ruysdael. Augustus Saint-Gaudens designed a magnificent mantel for the entry hall, now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Joseph V. McKee, President of the NYC Board of Aldermen, Mayor James J. Walker, and members of the Board of Estimate travel down into a shaft to inspect the new Eighth Avenue subway, 1928.
McKee would become Acting Mayor in 1932 when Walker resigned amid scandal. He only lasted four months, being defeated in a special election by John P. O’Brien. He ran again in the regular election of 1933, but lost to Fiorello LaGuardia.
