Ark of Artemis

Played through Ark of Artemis, an rpg maker eroge created by Kujirabo. This is a sequel to LAST EMBRYO -EITHER OF BRAVE TO STORY- which is also an rpg maker eroge by Kujirabo. Ark of Artemis stars Claudia, a side character from the first game, as she and her guild travel to a different part of the world to help fight the Edenfolk who want to kill all of the Michelinfolk. It is standard story telling, I enjoyed the plot of the first game well enough. This game was much shorter with a lot less interesting moments. The dungeons are all bad, the combat is throwaway, the enemies are even less varied than before. But who cares, Claudia is super cute and the h scenes are better than the first game. The art got a bit of an upgrade but I think the character sprites in Last Embryo were charming.

I tried to beat the game as a virgin, or I at least wanted to give the sex potion to Satyr so I could lose my virginity to her, but I did the dungeons out of order so I didn't get the potion before triggering the final cutscene. I didnt even get the virgin achievement for some reason but I definitely never got penetrated so idk. Maybe I masturbated too much. I'll run through the game again on a corrupted run and see what happens, at least trying to collect as many H scenes as I can.

I will play Last of Fantasma when it comes out. I like this series, it isn't deep in terms of dungeons or combat, but the girls are cute and the world is interesting enough. I hope Last of Fantasma goes back to Sill though or at least is part of the main story again.

Last Embryo 3

As a good example of what I am talking about with regards to the series pacing and it’s annoying focus on set-up: it takes until around page 120 for the kids to actually make it to Little Garden.  Everything before that is just boring set-up, set-up and set-up and the page count for the entire volume is around 270 pages. And because more than a third of the volume is focused on set-up, we don’t get to see much of You herself. I was really looking forward to seeing You act as a leader but we don’t get to see much of that at all and the Izayoi sections of the plot are just distracting at this point and take up way too much time.

I’ve known for a while now that this would likely be my last volume of this series. I only got this far because I feel an obligation to read what I’ve bought but the last volume that I really enjoyed was Mondaiji 4. After that, the series became more focused on the plot than the characters and the plot got really overly complicated and I got bored. I was really hoping that Last Embryo would reignite my interest in the series but it hasn’t. It is a shame that I didn’t get to see Asuka again but I think it would be a waste of my time to continue.

Last Embryo 2

There are a lot of differences between Last Embryo and Mondaiji but one of the most important ones, I feel, is that Homura and the others did not arrive at Little Garden by choice. They never recieved a letter asking them if they would forsake all of their current relationships and possessions in order to travel to a new world and they still want to go back to their original world at some point. This, to me, makes them not nearly as interesting protagonists as Izayoi, Asuka and You were. And, while they each may have their own circumstances, they are not “problem children” (Mondaiji) and to me that it is not as fun. I think part of it is also that the new trio are missing a “Kurousagi” - they don’t have a mum friend for them to tease mercilessly like the original trio did with Kurousagi and there’s something so nice about that dynamic that’s just missing here.

It is definitely a good thing that they are not just a retread of the original trio but I can’t help miss Asuka and You. And it doesn’t help that Izayoi is the only member of the original trio to appear in Last Embryo in these two volumes as I personally feel that Izayoi is at his most interesting when he’s interacting with Asuka and/or You. Maybe they’ll grow on me eventually but I can’t see it happening any time soon.

For what it’s worth, I don’t think that Last Embryo is a bad sequel. I think it manages to retain a lot of the qualities that Mondaiji had while still making a fresh spin on things and I think that Mondaiji fans will be mostly pleased with it but it has yet to bring back the qualities of Mondaiji that I personally liked so I haven’t really been enjoying it much, unfortunately.

Next volume has You on the cover so I can’t help but get excited despite myself. Here’s hoping that I end up enjoying it!

Last Embryo 1

I remember reading volume 1 of Mondaiji and complaining about the break-neck pacing but right now I miss it. I mean, it tried to fit in too many things into the 1 volume, yes, but it also wasted no time to get things started. Last Embryo 1, on the other hand is so damn slow that it was actually painful. And it’s only around 250 pages but so little gets done.

Anyway, Last Embryo takes place three years after the end of Mondaiji and introduces three new leads: Homura and Suzuka, two children who are a part of Kanaria’s Family Home, the same orphanage that Izayoi comes from, and Ayato, who is connected to Asuka in a spoilery way. I don’t think any of them are as good as Mondaiji’s protagonists and Suzuka in particular feels a bit tacked on, though her gift is cool. The only members of the original central cast to have any major appearances in this volume are Izayoi and Kurousagi.

What I liked most about the volume is that it didn’t feel like it was just a repeat of the first volume of Mondaiji. It manages to feel a bit fresh and the characters are quite distinct from the original cast and that’s a very good thing but I can’t help but miss the way that Mondaiji 1 was written.

I have three volumes of this series so I’ll be getting through the next two to see if it gets better before I decide to drop this series or not.
