I’m someone who is, to put it mildly, comfortable in routine. Set in my ways, stuck-in-the-mud, your choice. So when my cult owners told me they wanted me out of my apartment, where I have lived for 13 years, it felt like a throat-punch. They offered me a settlement to break the lease. Naturally, I countered and after a few shuffle steps, they agreed. Now I’m kicking myself -- they would have gone much higher. Still and all, a low five-figure bonus for me.
But then there’s the problem of where to go. My apartment has been decorated and furnished over the years to resemble a Field & Stream dream cabin. Very comfortable, and did I mention it’s huge? Three bedrooms, 10 foot ceilings, hardwood floors, the typical Montreal charmer.
So I started on the internet search and quickly became dispirited. Small places, half the size of mine, priced at 50% higher than what I’m paying. I visited about a half-dozen and got more depressed with each one. I decided to walk through my chosen neighbourhood just to see what’s available but not listed. I sat on a bench in a small park for a rest and what do I see? A stately grande dame of a building with a sign on the door. I figured ‘nothing to lose’ and dialed the number.
Long story short, I went to see it today and signed a lease within ten minutes. It’s probably even bigger than my current apartment, lots of character, same high ceilings and hardwood, in a great neighbourhood, with a heated garage space complete with remote control, all for an extra $100. I underpaid the market rate for about the last ten years, so I guess I can live with it.
Now I just have to move. Ugh.
