Ahtme crèche in Kohtla-Järve, Estonia. Built in the early 1950s and designed by Moscow-based Gosztravprojekt. Currently abandoned. Under Soviet law, new mothers in the 1940s and 1950s had to return to work after just a few months of maternity leave. To adjust this sort of demographic change, a number of crèches were established in abandoned buildings, frequently in villas (of people who had fled the country or who had been deported to Siberia by the Soviets). In the new industrial settlements - among these Ahtme - all of the infrastructure, including all housing, was designed on the basis of standardised design projects often coming from Moscow or Leningrad. The crèche in Ahtme was built for the children of miners of the oil shale enrichment plant according to the all-Soviet design no 778. The fact that the crèche was considered a healthcare institution until 1968 is indicative in its architecture: for example, the imposing balcony was necessary to allow children to get fresh air during recess. Viimsi kindergarten's Sunwheel house. The building has a distinctive sun-shaped plan, where pastel-coloured class 'pods' are arranged like rays around a cylindrical assembly hall unit.
