As promised (ages ago >_>) AU! Ok. I get stuck when what I'm reading/writing feels false. Not like, Dean's too OOC, but--he should be /more/ OOC, if they're raised apart, one's a sociopath, etc. This some nature-nurture shit, right? Is there some kind of core self you center on? I mean, that pirate thing you read; they're not very J2. But how could they be, when their lives are so different? So, how do you write S/D or J2 who ring true to us who love them, AND to the peculiarities of the 'verse?

I’m so glad you did! Love the pirate AU fic you wrote. As I mentioned, I have a huge soft spot for a good supernatural or rps AU. Writers who can transport the show characters into whatever world they want deserves all the kudos. So, my response on your question may get a little long so more under the cut.

And the question is tough, because you’re right - if you build another world around them, then they should act differently as a result. I think this is why some readers have difficulty with AUs because they don’t see the canon characters they love reflected there. (RPS characters are a whole other thing because they are AU characters by definition. No matter how much we think we know these actors, WE DON’T.) 

If a writer doesn’t at least show some core aspects of their personalities that I recognize (even if exaggerated), then I have no interest in reading the fic. Dean is brave and protective - that can be twisted into obsessive, hard-headed, possessive, or any number of things. But the number one reason I walk away from a fic is Dean’s relationship with Sam. If Dean is so focused on whatever person they pair him with, that Dean is annoyed or irritated with Sam or wants to get rid of his little brother as soon as possible, then I can’t really read it. Doesn’t have to be a focus of the story, just one sentence to this effect and I’m out. Or another AU version is dewy-eyed Dean who is scared and weeps at everything (and usually this Dean throws out I love you’s like beads at a Mardi Gras parade). I can’t see that in any world. 

But that’s my interpretative. As long as the writers makes the characters three-dimensional and their personalities are relevant to the story, I’m happy for the most part.

Was discussing this recently with a few friends recently that it would be nice to know in advance which Sam and Dean (or Jared and Jensen) you are getting inside a long fic before you start. If you know a writer well, you can probably guess the characteristics they will focus on, and either read or avoid. As an example, I know what my J2 profiles are, no matter what the storyline: Jensen is loyal, protective and a bit controlling (we know that he likes to direct things) and Jared is funny, questioning and self-conscious (and likes to be directed because this is the yin to my Jensen yang). And clumsy. Poor Jared in my fics is always clumsy. Some people won’t agree with that, and that’s fine.

Sorry for the ramble! I’d love to hear what characteristics might turn you off an AU or what you love to read.
