Laurence Winram Visit

Todays Monday morning class we had a visit from a commercial/personal photographer Laurence Winram. 

he talked us through how he built his career up and how he got contacts. as he showed us his website and portfolio. 

when looking through his website I saw this image:

This image makes you question what is going on in this image is he good or bad the dark colours and weapon suggests he could be bad or at least an anti-villian the mask hides the identity making it more mysterious. the back ground is quite light making him stand out against it.

Laurence made me think of different photoshoot ideas and inspired me to do better and create more unique photos.

Today we had a visiting photographer come in and tell us about his work. He does commercial photography as his main work but also enjoys doing a lot of personal projects.

I took a look on his website through his work and I particularly like his “Shadow” personal project, in particular I really admired this photograph. I like the double exposure of the model and the flower it creates a beautiful image.

Laurence Winram

In today’s class we had a visit from the photographer Laurence Winram who is based in Edinburgh, Scotland.

His work consists in his personal work of which I was amazed of and his commercial work which I liked a lot as well personally.

He gave us a nice talk for all the NQ groups of photography in which he showed us his work and talked about it. He gave us his experience and knowledge, as well as some tips that you could get from that which is nice.

This was my favourite photo, or one of them from his personal work.

Utilise your tools, get a sketchbook and you can plan and play around with ideas.

Pinterst can be a good asset to collecting and sourcing ideas.

Fear is one of the things that holds you back majorly. 

Put a good flexible price on your time and worth.

Tab and key word your photos.

Use your past to help you with your ideas.

Always act on your weird ideas and instincts.

Long exposure shots and playing around with light.

Being an assistant is a good way to learn tricks and get into the industry. 

Back up your photos more than once.

Laurence Winram

Today we had a talk from Laurence Winram. During his talk he showed us his personal and commercial works, while explaining how he sketches his shoots out in order to create a plan from which he can work from. It was interesting to listen to him talk about his own works and experiences as well in take in tips that he gave us, for example working with prices and being flexible with clients.

What I’ve taken away from the talk: 

It’s good to have friends who are in parallel positions with photographer’s such as graphic designers. It’s like having a foot in the door. 

There’s great importance in having a personal project to play around with, often in a commercial setting they will look at these for a reference. 

A blanket format of images on your website/domain is a little more appealing to the modern audience.

A good technique to achieve a “halo” effect around a model is to drape a sheet of black velvet the size of your subject over it, it’ll have a glow effect around the subject. 

Fake blood can be made from corn syrup, if required for a shoot. 

Try lighting everything else but the subject, reflective lighting can be interesting to play with. 

chronosync is a good file-sharing tool.
