Clean White Evaluation
The aim for this brief was to create an image using a clean white background and for the focus of the image to be entirely on the model.
For this project I chose to shoot my partner Eden, which worked to my advantage as we are very comfortable around each other therefore they weren’t too shy when it came to modelling.
For the final shoot i chose to style them in a suit as they feel most confident when wearing more masculine clothing and they also agreed that would be a good idea. I think this was a good choice as it made them more comfortable in front of the camera as well as fitting with their personality.
I think I completed this project well as i was able to do multiple shoots which helped me develop a good idea of how i wanted my final image to be. I also enjoyed trying out new viewpoints and compositions by using the blocks in the studio. I am pleased with how my final image turned out as I think it’s very different from anything i’ve shot before and I was pleased with the final composition as well as the final edit.
If i was to do this again i think i would’ve brought assistance with me as constantly moving the lights around instead of shooting did waste quite a bit of time as we only had 1hr slots per shoot.
Environmental Project Plan
For this brief i will be shooting my partner at their work, which is at a cafe. I have chose to shoot this as the model is already comfortable with me and i think it would be very easy to work with them and in their environment. The risks involved in this should could include being hurt by hot appliances or sharp utensils however we will be shooting when the cafe is closed (as it is quite a small cafe and gets very busy during opening hours) so none of the appliances should be on.
Equipment:
LED Panel
50mm lens
24-70mm lens
Canon 700D
Shot Ideas:
Shots of items in the cafe
Close up of Edens hands
Portrait of Eden
Wide angle shots of kitchen/cafe
Shots of Eden while doing tasks
Nick Knight
Nicholas David Gordon “Nick” Knight OBE, born 24th November 1958, is a British fashion photographer and founder and director of SHOWstudio.com. He is an honorary professor at University of the Arts London and was awarded an honorary Ph.D. by the same university.
Knight who is known for his fashion photography, challenges conventional beauty standards within his work. He has collaborated with many big designers such as John Galliano and Alexander McQueen. Advertising campaigns for the most prestigious clients such as Christian Dior, Lancôme, Swarovski, Levi Strauss, Calvin Klein, Paris Vogue, Dazed & Confused, Another, Another Man and i-D magazines have consistently kept Knight at the forefront of progressive image-making for the past three decades.
Although the images below don’t have a clean white background, I think the use of space and bold colours on the models make the images interesting and I’d like to take some inspiration from this for my images.
Richard Avedon
Avedon (1923-2004) is known for his outstanding fashion photographs, he has shot many images against a clean white background, which is very fêting to my brief, this is why I have chosen to use him as inspiration. Avedons images (although his main genre is known to be fashion) challenge the viewers to look past fashion and try to get an understanding of the subjects personality and characteristics.
Seeing The Light Final 4
Seeing the Light Evaluation
The goal for this brief was to use natural light and compose 4 different images using different lenses, viewpoints, diffusers and different compositions. I think I achieved this well in my final images. If I was to do this again however I would’ve asked for assistance when using the modifiers as I had to ask my model to hold it up while I shot, therefore the images using the reflectors were mainly just close up shots so I wouldn’t get the reflector in the image. I also would have used a wider range of natural light as I would’ve liked more intense shadows and highlights in some of my images however this is just down to chance, as the weather can’t be controlled. I would also like to have experimented with different lenses more as for this brief I mainly shot on my prime lens which is 50mm (and used a wide angled lens for one of the shoots) I think this would’ve added to my images.

Colour Grading
For my first edit I used colour look up “HorrorBlue” as I liked the blue ue it gives to the image. I also increased the blues in the image and then increased the brightness slightly.
For my second I just edited how I normally would and didn't do anything disruptive.
For my third edit I used the emerald green filter as well as lowering the vibrance so the image appears more cold.
For my final edit I chose to be more experimental by using colour look up but also trying it with hue and saturation to create a colourful image. Although id never edit my image like this I enjoyed trying something different.

Source Magazine: Thinking Though Photography
For this magazine I will be analysing a section labelled “Multidimensional Wales”
How are the images displayed?
On the first 2 pages the images are displayed alongside a description of what the photographer was trying convey through this project. The first page the image is in the top left corner leaving plenty of room for text however the picture is still a decent size that the viewer can se what's happening in the image. The pages beyond the first two are covered with images and the only text is the names underneath of the pictures.
Are the images full-page bleeds or are they displayed in a series at the same size?
The images vary in sizes. The 3rd page has two landscape images of roughly the same size whereas the 4th has 3 images varying in size and layout, with a mixture of horizontal and landscape. There are no full bleeds however the last page of this project is a full page size image which I think works very well and the end of the series as a finale.
What image is used to lead you into the story and why?
The first image is labeled “Judy’s Bampy’s House” within in this image we can see an interior location with a dining table taking up most of the Fram and a vase filled with artificial flowers. I think this image was first to show where the photographer would be staying while their trip to Wales. The image also gives off a sense of home and also pride in this persons house as it looks to be set up nicely for the guest.
Does the sequence make sense and does it flow?
In my opinion at first glance the sequence doesn't make a lot of sense as it jumps from the dining table to a landscape image then to portrait of a woman in a music store however I do think it slows with what the photographer is trying to convey with this work which is “Multidimensional Wales” as these images do show many different dimensions, which may not make sense at first but do flow together quite nicely.
Is there a title to the series and does the text vary in size and throughout?
The title at the beginning is very minimal and doesn't stand out too much as to not take away from the images as they are the main part of this project. Other than the title there is an introduction however the lettering is very small, again I think this is for the same reason as the title.
What is the overall design?
The overall design of this section of Source Magazine is simplistic. I think the photographer has made it clear that they want the focus to be on the images mainly and that is shown through the minimal use of fancy editing.
Graduate Photography Showcase Zine
James Naylor “Do I Pass?”
This project illustrate the struggle the photographer is going through with their gender identity as a trans masc non-binary person and trying to break out of the traditional standards of what it means to be non-binary in a binary society.
How are the images displayed?
The images are displayed as Polaroids over two pages with annotations of the photographers (who is also the subject) thoughts underneath as well as dates which tell us what stage of their transition they are at.
Are the images full-page bleeds or are they displayed in a series at the same size?
The images are life size Polaroids displayed in a chronological series that follows the subjects transition while on testosterone.
What image is used to lead you into the story and why?
The first image is the subject at their “T-Party” this was a celebration of them starting testosterone and also their coming out anniversary. I think this is a perfect starting image as it shows the beginning of their journey to becoming their true self and fits very well as the first image to the project.
Does the sequence make sense and does it flow?
The sequence does make sense as it flows chronologically from one page to the next then back underneath the first image so the viewer has to read from next page to the next and then back again. This shows the viewer their growth throughout their journey.
Is there a title to the series and does the text vary in size and throughout?
The biggest text is the photographers name with their university name underneath as this is a graduate portfolio section. The title of the work is small in comparison and sits just above the introduction to the work.
What is the overall design?
The overall design is simplistic and clean. The Polaroids give a vintage look to the project and also a more intimate feeling as there was more thought into the how they wanted to present their work rather than just using dslr.
Aperture Magazine
Looking Out/Looking In Dehli
How are the images displayed?
The images are displayed in a large format with text to introduce them at the beginning.
Are the images full-page bleeds or are they displayed in a series at the same size?
The images in this series are all the size of half a page and bigger. There is also a full-page bleed of what looks to be two siblings outside. The images are displayed as 1 per page which creates a kind of separation throughout the series.
What image is used to lead you into the story and why?
The first image is a man standing outside in front of a washing line. I think they used this image as it shows the environment it is set in, which would be at home and the series is about growing up.
Does the sequence make sense and does it flow?
The series does make sense as the images show the togetherness of family as well as growing up and being an individual with the use of single subject shots.
Is there a title to the series and does the text vary in size and throughout?
The title of the project is “A Peal of Spring Thunder” and is at the bottom the the page instead of the top which I like as its unusual. Above that is the Photographers name Ishan Tankha and then introduction is above that.
Workflow
1 Open images onto bridge and batch rename
2 Rate and sort potential final images
3 Make a spread sheet of final images
4 Export spreadsheet as PDF and change to JPEG in order to upload
5 I would also save all my work onto my one drive account into selected folders as to not lose anything and keep it organised, then I would open my finals into photoshop and begin editing
