Kaytee Lava Ledges are garbage now?
There are three lava ledges in my boys cage that have been there for a few years and they’re still great. I decided I wanted more but Kaytee now makes them with super cheap hanger bolts instead of the old metal hardware that was better anchored into the pumice.
I’ve purchased four in the past six months and they’ve all broken immediately. The latest two were unusable straight out of the package. The screw spun inside the ledge the first time I tried to affix them to the cage. There was no way to tighten them so they just spun on the screws.
I cleaned off whatever type of adhesive was on the ends of the hanger bolts and re-inserted them with some epoxy putty. It’s working for now but if they fail again, perhaps I’ll purchase some longer hanger bolts and try again. If anyone can suggest a piece of hardware that will anchor better into the pumice, please let me know!
In the mean time, maybe avoiding this product wouldn’t be a bad idea (at least until they go back to using higher quality hardware).
