Summary: An offhanded comment from your best friend Beckett leads to him setting you up with his teammate.

“You need to get laid.” Beckett stated, sprawled out on your couch, mindlessly scrolling on netflix. It was mid afternoon, and the sun was shining in through your windows, lighting up your apartment. Outside, the city buzzed. It was early March. And Anaheim was busier than usual with people traveling for spring break.

Beckett making himself at home on your couch was a regular occurrence. In the few years you had known him, the both of you had formed a close friendship. You had met from a mutual friend, giving each other shit the whole night. And as cliche as it sounds, you hit it off instantly, hanging out almost every day he wasn't on a road trip.

“I know, don't remind me.” You groaned, rolling your eyes. You had definitely been pent up recently, your past two ‘hookups’ consisted of both guys being too self centered to care if you came or not.

Secrets weren't really a thing between the two of you. You both were honest about your hookup experiences. Good or bad. He would tell you about the blonde with fake tits who accidently bit his dick, and you’d tell him about the guys who couldn't even make you cum. There wasn't really a science behind being so open with each other. You just…felt comfortable with each other. Beckett was like a brother to you in every sense.

“So… go get laid then.” He suggested, like it was as simple as going to the store.

“It's not that easy, asshole. I don't have guys falling at my feet like your instagram girls.” You huffed. “And plus, I don't really want to keep hooking up with random guys, you know?”

“No.” he said bluntly, picking a movie.

Ever the charmer, he was.

“I want a boyfriend, Beckett. Not a hookup.” You said, accentuating each word.

He hummed, brows furrowing. And you sighed, accepting defeat, figuring it was the end of the discussion. You fell into your normal routine; a movie playing on the tv, while you both tried to pay attention, but were really just scrolling on your phones, occasionally sending each other a stupid tiktok.

Some time passed before he shot up, knocking his knee against yours in the process.

“Ow! You fucker.” You winced, grabbing your knee dramatically.

“I got it!” he cheered, standing in front of you.

“You got what?”

“I’m going to set you up with my teammate.” he said, grinning.

“No.” You told him. And when he raised his brows in a challenge, you sighed. “Who?”

“Leo.” He said, sitting back down next to you and opening instagram.

You really didn't follow along with Beckett's team, hockey had never been your favorite thing. So it wasn't surprising when the name didn't instantly ring a bell in your mind.

“Dont message him right now!” You cried, snatching his phone.

Early on in your friendship, you learned that Beckett was the type of person who had to do everything the moment he thought of it, not taking the time to think things out properly. He had once sent a girl his address after five minutes of texting, and to no surprise, it was a fake account trying to get nudes from famous people and athletes.

“Why?” He questioned, genuine confusion in his voice.

“I don't know anything about him.”

He shrugged, grabbing his phone back. “Hes Swedish and tall. That's like the whole package.”

You hesitated, and he continued. “See,” He said, showing you a picture of who you could only assume was Leo. Your stomach did an involuntary flip when you saw him. He was undoubtedly attractive. He was sitting at a table, a lazy grin on his face, arms around two other guys you didn't recognize, and a camo hoodie over his head. There was no doubt that he was your type, but the idea of pursuing your best friend's teammate made you feel guilty for no reason.

“Wouldnt that be weird though?” You asked, trying to ignore the little butterflies when Beckett pulled up another picture. This time, Leo had glasses and a t-shirt on, revealing a tattoo on his forearm that you hadn't been able to see in the first picture.

“No? I’ll just send him your instagram and tell him to message you.” He explained, and before you could protest how stupid that plan was, he had already shared your profile to Leo.

“Beckett.” You groaned, covering your face with your hands. “He’s going to think I’m fucking insane!”

“No he won't. He’s a good guy I promise. I wouldn't set you up with a dick.” Beckett said softly. “If you really aren't interested, I’ll tell him nevermind.”

“No.” You said quickly, “No, no, I am. I’m just…nervous?” You were definitely interested in Leo. No doubt about it.

“Oh so you think he's hot, hot.” He smirked. “He’s sweet, you’ll like him—oh he messaged back.”

You craned your neck, trying to catch a glimpse at the message, but he turned, blocking his phone from your sight.

“What’d he say?” You asked, biting your lip nervously.

“Here.” Beckett said, handing over his phone so you could read the messages.

The first message from Beckett had just simply been your profile, you rolled your eyes at his lack of information. Leo had sent back a ??, and Beckett had responded with My bsf, you should follow her. she's cute and your age. Take her to dinner or something. You're both painfully single. Leo hadn't read the last message yet.

“Way to cut to the chase.” You said bluntly.

“I’m just speeding the process up.”

All of a sudden your phone buzzed, and Beckett's face lit up at the notification, grabbing your phone from the coffee table. “He followed you!”

“Shut up!” You gasped, looking at the notification.

You hit accept, following him back. Beckett watched the whole thing, smirking when he saw the blush coat your cheeks.

Shortly after Leo followed you, Beckett left, complaining about having to do laundry before his roadie the next day. Leaving you all alone. You soon forgot about your earlier exchange, busying yourself around your apartment until your phone buzzed.

The next four weeks were spent talking with Leo almost every second of the day. He would call you after a game, talking to you as he drove home. Or after a flight, voice trailing off when he finally got back to his bed late at night, exhaustion seeping in. Sometimes he would call you and just talk in Swedish, too tired to translate his words. You always let him speak, never pushing or making him uncomfortable. You would call him when you were making dinner, propping your phone up against your counter, telling him about what places Beckett dragged you to today. You and Leo hadn't met in person yet, schedules not aligning between the playoffs starting soon and you being swamped with work. But he was coming over to your apartment tonight for dinner. You had talked about going out to dinner, but with the added media coverage surrounding Leo with the ducks being in the playoffs, you both agreed to stay in.

You had quickly learned everything about him—the pressure he feels from the media, the adjustment of moving to California, his struggle with his stutter. In return, you told how you met Beckett, about the time a squirrel crawled into your apartment from the balcony and you had cried for two hours in the bathroom before Beckett came and caught it, the way you didn't understand hockey much, but would try to understand it for him. That last one you had told him over facetime, and you saw the blood rush to his face, ears tinging pink when you told him.

“Hi.” Leo smiled, accent thick as he stood outside your apartment door. He had a bouquet of flowers in his hand, and a faint blush crept across your cheeks. “These are for you,” He extended the bouquet towards you. “I–I know I probably should've asked if you were allergic but I saw them and thought of you.”

He was wearing a hoodie and a pair of sweatpants, glasses on his face. He looked insanely attractive, his frame towering over yours. You blushed, finally getting to see him in person, not just behind your screen had your stomach fluttering with nerves.

“Oh Leo,” You breathed, heart swelling. “These are beautiful. Thank you.”

The flowers were a mix of soft pink flowers and baby's breath. You smiled when you noticed the baby's breath, which you had absentmindedly told him you liked last week.

He let out a breath, body visibly relaxing at your reaction. “Of course.”

You stepped aside, a silent invitation for him to enter. Walking into the kitchen, you looked over your shoulder to see him taking his shoes off.

“I’m making pasta and chicken.” You said, grabbing a vase and setting the flowers in it. “I hope that's okay.” The smell of seasonings drifted throughout the apartment, a bold contrast to the vanilla candle you had lit earlier.

You had spent most of the afternoon cleaning your apartment, then cleaning it again, and again. So by the time Leo showed up, the apartment was spotless. You had even cleaned your bedroom. Just in case.

“It sounds great.” He told you, leaning against the counter.

Your conversation soon flowed easily. You felt relaxed in his presence. There was no awkward or strained silence. Just a quiet understanding of two people who were learning each other. A small part of you hoped Leo would make a move—maybe kiss you before dinner, tell you how much he truly enjoys your company, maybe even spend the night. Fully content with just holding you, without the need to have you naked.

You were standing at the oven, back turned to him, very aware of how he was standing only a few feet behind you. Music was playing softly from your phone, and you absentmindedly hummed to it, stirring the sauce.

Suddenly, you felt Leo's chest against your back, his arms snaking around your waist. Your eyes widened, heart rate speeding up. He was cautious against you, giving you enough space if you wanted to pull back. You didn't, relaxing against his chest. Your arms wrapped around his, tightening his hold around you.

“This okay?” He whispered against your ear, bending down so his chin could rest on your shoulder. His voice sent a shiver down your spine, his accent thick.

“Yeah.” You said, resting your head against his chest, biting back the grin that was forming.

You stood there for some time, occasionally stirring the sauce as Leo still held you in his arms. Neither of you said anything, just standing there holding each other. The way he held you sent butterflies to your stomach, his arms engulfing your body. Your finger trailed the large vein on his hand absentmindedly, smiling when he shivered against you.

You turned your head, looking up at him. He was already looking at you, a small smile on his face. “Can,” He paused, voice soft. “Can I kiss you?” He asked, a blush creeping up his face. His eyes trailed down to your lips, then back up to your eyes, trying to gauge your reaction.

Your mouth parted, eyes scanning his face, waiting for him to make a joke or pull back. He didn't. Instead, his hand came up, brushing a stray piece of hair behind your ear.

“Yes.” You whispered, leaning in. You were so close to him, noses practically brushing. He wasted no time, connecting your lips slowly, hesitantly. His hand cupped your jaw gently, thumb brushing against your cheek. The kiss was like nothing you had ever had, thousands of butterflies erupted in your stomach, your face hot. His lips were gentle against yours, kissing you softly as he hummed against your lips.

You pulled back after a moment, both of you giggling slightly. You opened your eyes, making quick eye contact before crashing your lips together again. This kiss was much more confident, you turned around so you were facing him, bringing your hands up into his hair. His hands found your waist, pulling you flush against him as he deepened the kiss, tongue grazing your bottom lip. You gasped, caught off guard at his newfound confidence, and he used that to his advantage, slipping his tongue in your mouth. His glasses knocked against your face but you didn't stop, kissing him harder.

He pulled back after a minute, breathing heavily. You opened your eyes, cheeks hot and flushed. “Sa vacker.” He whispered against your skin, pressing a kiss to your forehead.

“What does that mean?” You asked, grinning when he blushed.

“So beautiful.”

Now it was your turn to blush, hiding your face in his chest. He laughed slightly, wrapping his arms around you, swaying slightly. You stayed there for a bit, just holding each other. A feeling of excitement coursing throughout your body. You two months ago would have never guessed you would be here. Standing in your apartment, in the arms of a man that was so sweet and gentle with you. One that you would've never met if it weren't for Beckett of all people.

Leo suddenly gasped, pulling back. “The sauce.”

“Shit!” You cursed, seeing it start to burn and bubble against the pan. You had been so caught up in him that you forgot to turn down the oven, and now your dinner was paying the price.

Leo giggled, watching you panic as you tried to save the rest of it.

After your thankfully not burnt dinner you slowly made your way to the couch, unable to keep your hands off each other, stealing kisses. Leo sat down, patting the spot next to him, arm slung around the back of the couch lazily. His thighs looked huge in his sweatpants, and you had to look away when you sat down. Leo's arm wrapped around your waist, pulling you against him. You turn on a movie, grabbing his other hand and intertwining your fingers.

He pressed his face to your hair, kissing your head softly, thumb rubbing small circles on your hand.

“Leo?” You said after some time, and he hummed, letting you continue. “This… isn't a one time thing, is it?”

He shifted, sitting up to look at you. You bit your lip anxiously, waiting for him to answer. “Is that what you want?”

You shook your head. “No.”

“Good.” He said. “Because I don't want that either.” You blushed at the raw honesty in his voice, and he continued. “I really, really like you. And–and I want to see where this goes.”

You let out a breath you didn't know you were holding, a smile making its way on your face. “Me too. I really like you, Leo."

He paused, cheeks flaming.

“Will…you be my girlfriend?” He asked, and as an afterthought he added on, “Please?”

You giggled, eyes crinkling. “Of course.”

He visibly relaxed, bringing your lips together, hands coming up to cup your face. You hummed against his lips, eagerly kissing him back. Yeah, you could get used to this. He groaned, pulling back. And you frowned. “Are you okay?”

He nodded. “Just can't believe Beckett of all people set us up. He's not gonna let us forget it.”

You rolled your eyes, already bracing yourself for the teasing remarks he’ll make. “Oh, I know.”

His eyes crinkled, a smile breaking out on his face, before he reconnected your lips again, giggling against you. And you felt yourself smiling again, forever grateful that Beckett told you that you needed to get laid. Because if it weren't for him, you wouldn't be here, in the arms of the kindest man you've ever met, holding you like he never wants to let go.
