I passed my LCSW exam this morning, and it was SO unsatisfying because instead of giving me a printout the screen just said PASS in tiny letters after I hit submit. So now the dumbest and most useless part of my brain is like "what if I just hallucinated that I passed? there's no proof!" So now I am Jacob Wysocky style repeating to myself "you are a regular guy, you know what the word 'pass' looks like."

I am officially registered to take the LCSW exam...in May. That is the soonest available Saturday with any open spots and lord knows I can’t take off work at a brand new job to go take a four hour test (nor would I want to). So May it is. More time to study I suppose.

LCSW exam resources and tips

As promised, I have scanned and uploaded my handout from the NASW review course. You can find it, broken into two files, here along with some other potentially useful resources for social workers. (Sorry for the crookedness...I was fighting with our copier but that’s as good as I could get it.)

Other tips I gleaned from the course...

It’s often helpful to break down what exactly the question is looking for and re-word it for yourself. (A lot of the questions will ask “what is the LEAST likely” or “which would not indicate a diagnosis of X”) -- This was certainly true of the wording of the questions on the Masters level exam

Make sure you ONLY take into account exactly what is in the question. Don’t try to include outside variables in a case scenario. Take it at face value.

There will be very few research questions, if any. If there is one and t-test is an option, that’s the answer. If t-test isn’t an option and Chi-squared is, then that’s the answer. 

If you come across several questions in a row that you aren’t sure of, don’t freak out. Just mark them for review, move on and go back and answer them at the end.

SIGNAL BOOST: I'M FORMING A CALIFORNIA LCSW GROUP

I’m looking for a study buddy or to form a group (no more than six of us) for studying for the California LCSW exam. I would do this online via Google Hangouts, Skype, and exchanging information via Evernote*.

I expect to be taking the first exam on April 2015 (based on when I anticipate turning in my hours and the current BBS turnaround time to validate those hours).

I anticipate that I would pass on the group to whoever still needs this around that time (unless I don't pass the exams on the first try).

Requirements:

Live in California. We are special, thus, there are law and ethics questions that pertain to our beloved and over-priced state. Not to mention, it helps being in the same timezone.

Hardware: You have a laptop, smartphone, or tablet with a microphone, preferably a front-facing video camera. Also preferable: you have a stable internet connection.

*Tech capable: Have a working knowledge of technology (e.g. how to use Gmail, Google Docs, a web browser, Google Hangouts or Skype). I will be using Evernote to collaborate with the group.

Good Attitude and Hard Work. I want to pass the exam the first time around and I do not want to waste your time if you have similar goals. I hope to attract social workers that want to learn, complete "homework", and share as much as s/he gains. I want this to be friendly and casual.
