A semi-comprehensive guide to domino masks (part 3)
So in part 1 and 2 I went over the masks made for the music videos and the masks made for the officially liscenced release stuff. Now its time to talk about the comics.
We see six new domino mask designs in the California comic books. Poison (comic version) Val Velocity, the more bandanna style of Vaya and Vamos, Cherri, and two unnamed character masks that come from the mailbox.
From panel to panel/mask to mask the exact shape of the masks in the comic change, sometimes they appear to be the full domino mask like the live action ones, sometimes they appear to be more superhero mask-like (see the other kinds of masks from planetary go in part 1) both would be acceptable for making these character masks IMO. Pappilon do a sqare sided domino mask which I have seen with fabric bands attached to the side to look like a zorro mask, these could be used to make Vaya and Vamos' masks.
Party Poison's mask seems most like the super hero style smaller masks in its various references. The shading implies that it has the blue spots applied, the black triangles could be either applied or painted on.
If you wish to make this style of cut on a mask youre making I'd reccomend a hot knife as it will seal the fibres as you cut and provide a slight singe to the edge that looks good, otherwise you could use scissors then run a lighter over the cuts afterwards to seal the edges.
Val's mask is bluegrey with a red X. The lack of shading implies that the X is painted and not a seperate piece applied over the mask. This one also tends to look more like the smaller superhero-esque domino masks, but it varies panel to panel.
Vaya and Vamos' masks appear to tie off at the back, and again panel to panel go from looking like a ninja-turtles shape to a more superhero mask shape.
Personally I reccomend against just wearing a fabric band kinda mask for this style as they tend to roll up/skrunch around the eyes. A good solution is either the zorro style papillon masks that have ties at the side, or taking a smaller superhero-esque domino and gluing a fabric band mask to the front of it to help the fabric band keep its shape, the fabric band can then be used to hold the domino to your face tightly.
The two misc masks have familiar and neat designs, they look to be full size like the live action ones but its hard to say. Theyre good inspo all the same.
Cherri Cola's mask is pretty awesome. The pink is sorta similar to Dr D's raygun and the lightening bolts are really cool, this one is quite clearly the live action style of mask in most panels as it fully covers his nose unlike most other masks in the comic. Hard to say if it painted or an appliqué due to how dark the design is.
The lightening bolts on the face is honestly cool af this mask was a big inspo for my custom one.
This isnt nearly as comprehensive as the other posts but theres a lot less meat to work with here sadly.
