The Lead Masks Case of Two Brazilian Men
Back in August 18, 1966 dead bodies of two men were found on Vintem Hill, Brazil. The men were wearing the lead masks like glasses at the time of death. They were both wearing the raincoats as mentioned earlier and also wearing custom made peculiar-looking lead masks.
The two men were Manoel Pereira da Cruz and Miguel José Viana, and they worked around Rio de Janeiro. No, you get UFO de Janeiro, and it’s the deaths of two Brazilian men who just so happened to be wearing lead masks in the wrong place at the right time (at least that’s what we’re supposed to believe). The waitress from the bar remembered Miguel. Niterói, it should be noted, was extremely closer to the two men relative to Sao Paulo.
A local, Raulino de Matos, known as a sort-of neighborhood watchman, saw a jeep carrying Miguel and Manoel. Maybe they chose such a far destination to cover up the amount of time they’d be gone? They saw a strange, round object with a bright halo of light flying over the hilltop where the bodies were found.
How the Story Begins On August 16, Manoel informed his wife that he and Miguel would be taking a trip to Sao Paulo the next day. Two days later, on August 20, a group of friends went searching for a kite, which had been lost. The trip was to buy more materials for the workshop, as well as a car. Being radio technicians I can only imagine is one of the more tedious jobs in the universe…Unless you’re interested in contacting alien life! However, due to police using other resources and the lateness in the day, they were unable to secure the site until the following day.

The Lead Masks Case
On August 20, 1966 the bodies of two men were discovered on Vintém Hill, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. They were identified as Manoel Pereira da Cruz and Miguel José Viana, two electronic technicians who traveled to Vintém Hill from a town several kilometers away. The fact that their cause of death was never determined coupled with the strange circumstances surrounding their deaths has made the case one of the most perplexing cases of unsolved death.

“16:30 estar no local determinado. 18:30 ingerir cápsulas, após afeito protoger metais aguardar sinal mascara”
On August 20 th , 1966, a boy in Rio de Janeiro’s afternoon of kite flying was brought to a somber halt when he found the bodies of two men, later identified as Miguel José Viana and Manoel Pereira da Cruz, on Vintém Hill. In a state of shock and confusion he raced back into town to make aware the local authorities of the situation, however due to a combination of the effects that the weather had ad on the area and the fact that it was already fairly late in the day, it was not possible to reach the bodies for examination until the following day.
So what did they find when they finally reached the ditch on the hill? Partially obscured by foliage were the bodies of two men lying next to each other; both wearing full suits underneath raincoats. Their attire was not the strangest part however, rather the fact that they both donned what seemed to be handcrafted, vision obscuring lead eye masks.
The other objects of note that were found next to the men only complicate the story more. These included: two wet towels, an empty bottle (the bar that they bought it from was the last time that Miguel and Manoel were seen alive), and a notebook which contained - perhaps the most haunting piece of the puzzle – a cryptic note which translates loosely to “16:30 be at the specified location. 18:30 ingest capsules, after the effect protect metals await mask signal”.
Due to the time the bodies were left in the muddy terrain and left before an autopsy could be performed, it was not possible to test their vital organs for signs of damage. What is known of the men is what their families and friends have told. The morning of their disappearance they told their families that they would be going out to buy supplies for their television repair jobs, however they took much more money than would have been necessary and jumped on a bus, travelling more than 160 miles away.
So what are the possible explanations for this mystery?
1. It was an attempt at contacting extraterrestrial life A common aspect in cases involving UFOs and aliens is that of radiation burns and poisoning, perhaps they were expecting some sort of activity that they would need to shield themselves from with lead goggles? Not only this but wet towels could also act as a precautionary measure against intense heat, also said to be emitted in some UFO cases. Furthermore, the “capsules” referred to in the message have been speculated to be iodine capsules which in certain cases could be used to protect against the ingestion of radioactive materials.
2. Suicide pact Friends of Manoel and Miguel have also stated that they were involved in a science based cult-like group. Tied into the above theory, it was thought that in a very similar way to the events of Heaven’s Gate, they believed that in order to contact extraterrestrial life forms they would first have to ascend to a different plain of existence. However, the reason that some negate this theory is actually tied to the water bottle. When the men bought the water from the bar, they got a receipt that meant that once they returned the bottle they would receive some reimbursement – why would someone who did not intend to ever return take a precaution like this?
3. They were involved in a materials deal gone awry With their background in the electronics field and a keen interest in UFO activity (as noted by their families), some say that they may have been trying to obtain strange materials. This could account for the large sum of money that they took with them and once again, the masks. Their friends speculate that the contact they met up with to make the transaction did not have the good intentions and instead murdered them for profit.
We will probably never know what truly happened to Manoel and Miguel and the questions still remain… who were they meeting? What were they protecting themselves from? What were they searching for?
The truth is out there, Holly <3 xxx
PS. There was SO much to cover here and it’s a little overwhelming, so if you wanna learn more Thinking Sideways Podcast covered the case pretty extensively and I would definitely recommend giving them a listen!!

Inktober Mystery 21: The Lead Masks Case
The Lead Masks Case refers to a pair of strange deaths that occurred in Brazil in 1966. A young man flying a kite stumbled on to the bodies of two deceased men and reported them to the authorities. The men each wore a formal suit, a waterproof coat, and a lead eye mask. There was no evidence of trauma or struggle. Next to the men, police found an empty water bottle and two wet towels, as well as a small notebook with the instructions reading “16:30 be at the specified location. 18:30 ingest capsules, after the effect protect metals wait for mask signal .”
The two men were electronic technicians from a neighboring town, and police reported that the men had been seen at a bar before their death, and one of the men was acting nervous and checking his watch frequently. A mutual friend of the men reported that they were in a local “scientific spiritualist” group that had an interest in psychedelic drugs and contacting Mars. According to reports, no toxicology tests were performed on the bodies.
The Lead Masks Case refers to the inexplicable death of two electronic technicians, Manoel Pereira da Cruz and Miguel José Viana. Their bodies were discovered by a kite flyer on the Vintem Hill in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 20 August, 1966. Due to the harsh terrain, the bodies could not be reached until the following day. The two men were discovered laying side by side, partially covered by grass. They were both wearing formal suits, raincoats, and a bizarre lead eye mask. Beside the bodies was an empty water bottle, a notebook, and two soaked towels. Inside the notebook was a mysterious note which read: “16:30 be at the specified location. 18:30 ingest capsules, after the effect protect metals await signal mask.” There was absolutely no sign of trauma on either of the bodies nor was there any evidence of a struggle. During the autopsy, the cause of death could not be determined and no drugs were uncovered in their system.
Investigators were baffled by their seemingly unexplained and bizarre death. After questioning the two men’s friends, they came across one who had claimed that they were members of a “scientific spiritualist” group and that they had been attempting to contact aliens and spirits. Many conspiracy theorists believe they succeeded.

What Happened on Vintem Hill - A Very Strange Discovery!
