“Has it always been snowing this hard?” You asked, although it was mostly rhetorical, neither of you had been paying attention. You had asked Sugawara to help you with the homework due the next day and he obliged. It wasn’t like you both weren’t aware it was meant to snow today, it was more you didn’t know it was meant to snow that much. But as you looked out the window you noticed just how hard it was to actually see. The glass had frosted over and the roads just looked…white.
“No I don’t think so.”
Sugawara answered, sighing as he stood up, hearing the soft sound of his pencil tapping against the wooden table. You stepped a bit aside as he went to stand beside you, peering through the window that seemed to be completely iced over.
“I can’t see anything, can you?” You watched as he paused, taking a step back from the window, it wasn’t like Sugawara lived far away but you knew your mother would scold you if you made Sugawara go home when it was like this.
“No, its all snow. I guess I should leave before it gets bad, right?” Sugawara suggested, already going to pick up his things. You shifted your feet in place, a loud sigh escaping you as you considered your options. It wasn’t like Sugawara had to go far to make it back home, but still, it felt wrong to send him out with the weather like that. And it wasn’t as if Sugawara had never stayed over at your house before. If you counted that one time years ago when the two of you were still in elementary.
“You can stay here if you want?” You offered, trying not to make it obvious that you did actually want him to stay.
Sugawara paused, looking up as he heard your voice, you seemed a bit shy to be asking such a thing of him, it was cute.
“Yeah, sure. Was there any other problems you wanted to ask about?” He asked, trying to think of what you both had been doing before the change in topic.
“Uh, I just think this one.” You came back, sitting next to you as you pointed out the problem you had been wondering about listening to as Sugawara explained the problem to you.
“Were there any other ones?”
He asked, watching as you took the paper back to look a little closer. You brushed away some of the excess eraser shavings, trying to remember if there had been any others.
“No, I think that was it.” You said, a sigh of relief escaping you as you stretched your tired arms. Even if you had just gotten up moments ago, it felt like the two of you had been working on this homework for ages.
“Are you sure there isn’t anything you need?” Sugawara asked, his voice as patient as ever.
“No, I’m sure.”
You answered, glancing up to give him a confused look, he wasn’t usually this insistent. Not that you minded, but still.
“Do you want some tea?” You asked all of a sudden, trying to kill the dead silence that fell between the two of you. You weren’t even sure your family had any tea leaves left, but it was too late for that.
“Uh, sure?” Sugawara stated, feeling a bit caught off guard at the suddenness of your offer.
You quickly stood up, giving only a swift nod as acknowledgement as you left your room to go to the kitchen to make tea. If Sugawara didn’t know you any better he would’ve thought he did something wrong by making you want to leave so suddenly. But it didn’t take that long until you came back with two mugs of black tea, thanking whatever god there was above that you actually had tea leaves.
“Thank you.” He mumbled, taking the mug from your hands as he occasionally took sips. A more comfortable silence falling between the two of you. The only real sound being the soft rustle papers or the quiet click of ceramic as one of you sat your mug back down. It wasn’t any different from being in class together. The only thing that could ruin this moment was…a power outage? You already knew it was coming from the way the power came in and out, the lights flickering once then twice, before it would go out and come back on again. Until, the power didn’t come back, and the two of you just sat there, in the dark. Sugawara was the first to break the silence.
“Do your parents keep any flashlights?” You considered the question for a moment. Flashlights? You didn’t think so, although even if they did you had no clue where you would find one.
“I dunno…” You mumbled, voice a bit muffled as you turned your head away trying to make what you could of your dim room. It was late, and the little light coming through the window wasn’t putting in much work.
“Your phone is almost dead, right?” He asked, already knowing the answer from how you looked at him. You turned it over, watching as the dead battery screen stared back at you, you didn't know why Sugawara even bothered to ask, he already knew.
"My phone is always dead according to you."
You stated pointedly, it wasn't like he was wrong. Your phone was almost always dead, but it didn't mean you wanted to admit that to Sugawara of all people. You sighed. laying back on the floor as you looked up at the ceiling.
"And I thought studying was boring…" You mumbled, a loud sigh escaping you, the only thing interrupting your sorrow being Sugawara and how he laughed at you.
"You're being dramatic y'know, Y/n?" He laughed, relaxing somewhat as he absorbed the familiar atmosphere.
"Says the guy who willingly agrees to study every night." You argued, actually sitting up to look at him.
"Because I'm responsible, unlike you." He joked, mostly, I mean it wasn't like studying wasn't the responsibility of students like you. And that was likely why Sugawara always seemed to do better on exams and tests, because he actually studied.
"I can be responsible…I just choose not too." You stated, earning another laugh from Sugawara, this conversation really felt so unserious, but sometimes that was best.
"I think everyone sees that, y'know."
You paused, squinting to look at the clock for a moment before going back to looking at Sugawara staring at you.
"Is it really that dark? I thought your eyesight was better than mine."
You asked, half joking and yet half serious. You didn't look at him as you spoke, glancing at the window to gauge what time it was. Not like it would tell you much of anything, but your phone was dead and it was too dark to read the clock on your wall.
"Hey, Koushi?" You prompted, hearing the way he paused as he hummed, an invitation to continue.
"Can you read a clock?" You asked, wondering if he could read it considering he could see better than you.
"Like an analog?"
"What else would I be asking about?"
"I dunno, when do I ever know with you?" He asked, mostly as a joke as he turned his head to read the clock on your wall.
"It may be dead, I always forget to change the batteries." You noted softly, watching Sugawara huff softly, although considering you could still hear it ticking it was safe to assume it wasn't dead yet.
"I don't think it'd be running if it was dead, Y/n." He noted, stifling laughing at you again.
"It says, 7 pm, I think."
"You think it says 7 pm? You don't know if it says 7 pm? Koushi…I thought you said you could read a clock."
You said, faking a concerned tone as you teased your friend.
He only rolled his eyes, not paying you much mind.
"Can I ask you something, Y/n?" He asked, considering wether he genuinely wanted to ask or not.
"Sure." You answered, trying to shake off how cold the room suddenly felt. I mean…there was no power, and it was snowing.
"Why did you ask me? You usually ask Kiyoko for stuff like this, right?"
Your breath hitched, out of all things to ask, why that? It was true you and Kiyoko were friends, it was just that Kiyoko had told you to go ask Sugawara knowing you liked him. But you couldn’t tell him that, right? “Uh, Kiyoko was busy today.” You could tell Sugawara didn’t fully believe you, but it wasn’t like he had any reason to not believe you either.
“Are you cold?” He asked instead, moving the conversation forward, it wasn’t you could lie about that one. Sugawara could actively see you shivering.
“Uh, maybe?” You stated, as if it was embarrassing to be cold. Which it wasn’t, but you were surprised that Sugawara didn’t seem the least bit cold himself.
“You aren’t cold?”
You asked, already getting to grab a blanket off your bed.
“Do you want a blanket, Koushi?”
You asked, stopping in your tracks as you noticed Sugawara taking off his jacket.
“Oh, uh, I’m fine.”
He stated, feeling a bit embarrassed at having took off his jacket for seemingly no reason now.
“no no its fine!! I can take your jacket!” You stated, dropping your blanket back on the bed. Maybe it was a bit too obvious? And a bit perverted…but you didn’t really care. As you pulled it on you realized how it fit you a bit better than you initially thought, sure, it was a bit big but it didn’t completely engulf you either.
“It suits you.” He smiled, trying to ignore how the sight made his ears feel hot.
“Koushi your ears are red, are you cold?” You asked, trying to ignore how you knew that he likely was flustered seeing you in his clothes, but you also felt it was your mind being self-indulgent trying to convince yourself he liked you too. You hesitated for a moment before kneeling in front of him, covering his ears with your hands, not even taking in the fact that that the two of you were so close. Or that your actions were only making him more flustered.
“uh, Y/n, you’re a little close.” He stated as gently as he could, watching as you flinched as you finally realized how close you both were. You backed up almost immediately upon recognizing his discomfort, before feeling the way Sugawara gently grabbed your arm.
“Here, Y/n…was Kiyoko really that busy? I mean I know she’s more responsible than the two of us but I doubt she would be too busy to help you out with some homework.” You opened your mouth to protest the comment that Kiyoko was more responsible than you, you didn’t care about Sugawara saying that about himself, before you fully took in just who he was talking about.
“Well. no, she just recommended that I come ask you instead.”
You stated, shifting to face the floor, that felt such a lie even if it was in part true. Kiyoko had not been busy, but she had recommended Sugawara in recognizing that you had a crush on him and possibly in turn granting you a chance to confess.
“Um, Koushi what do you feel about me? Because I really like you so…” You trailed off, feeling yourself tense up as you moved to slap a hand over your mouth. Neither of you spoke for a moment as you tried to process that you seriously had just said that.
“Huh? Y/n…you said you just liked me?” Sugawara asked, feeling completely dazed, his usual calm composure completely gone by that point. You were just glad the room was too dark for him to properly see your face, or at least you hoped so considering you could only make out his silhouette in the dark room.
“Mhm…” You sighed, feeling your fingers curl against your cheeks as you closed your eyes, bracing yourself for his answer. Except it never came, other than the lights coming on causing you to basically jump from your seat at the scare it gave you. But upon realizing Sugawara was staring straight at you, you took of the collar of his jacket to cover your face. You squeezed your eyes shut, not wanting to risk meeting his gaze again.
“Y/n?” He called, gently tugging his jacket to hopefully reveal some of your face.
“What…?” You asked in response, almost sounding like you were crying as your voice cracked.
“Come on, I want to see your face when I say this.” He asked, giving his jacket another gentle tug as he huffed a small bout of laughter. You could only imagine how cute he looked at the moment laughing like that. As you opened your eyes, he gave you the sweetest of smiles, the one where it reached up to his eyes.
“I like you too.” He basically whispered, a voice just loud enough for you to hear. You pressed your lips together for a minute, trying to test your next moves before you shifted a bit closer. You took a deep breath before leaning in, kissing his lips, you felt how his body tensed against the sudden force before relaxing. You felt how once Sugawara relaxed he reached out to brace himself against your arm. Both of you felt out of breath after pulling away, but you couldn’t help but be grateful that the power was back on so you could see Sugawara’s face properly.
