LEARNER PROFILE #1 : STRENGTH
“We thoughtfully consider the world and our own ideas and experience. We work to understand our strengths and weaknesses in order to support our learning and personal development.” — IBO, 2013 (source)
During the 2015 academic year, I exhibited the attribute of being reflective because I was constantly looking for ways to improve upon my academic performance; by reviewing past work and suggesting improvements accordingly. The reflective learner profile entails an individual to critically consider their strengths and weaknesses in order to initiate self-improvement in both learning and personal contexts.
In the learning context, the need for being reflective was significant for me even during the start of the year. In order to cement positive academic development for the beginning semester of Year 12, I needed to reflect on the progress achieved in MYP — to identify my strengths and weaknesses, consequently setting goals that would help me to achieve better scores with a systematic treatment of time and revision skills. For instance, in light of an increased workload in the Diploma programme, I recognised the need to review strategies for revision coupled with a revision schedule which was given little consideration during my MYP years. In the absence of effective time management, I found it difficult to perform at an optimum level. An example time schedule I would implement in order to effectively manage my time during exam-intensive schedules is attached (here).
Besides from reflecting upon the MYP programme, I also reviewed upon subject-specific assignments in the short term. By critically reviewing work I had done early in the year, I was able to pick out areas I achieved particularly well and why, as well as examining areas I was lacking in and why. For example, in Biology we write up internal assessments such as lab reports following the completion of a particular experiment. The most common internal assessment is assessed according to two important aspects : analysis and evaluation. The first example (here) is an internal assessment completed during early Y12. By utilising this method, I saw drastic improvements in my scores on both criterions, shown in the second example (here) completed very recently. In being reflective, I constantly tried to improve the quality of my work by taking into consideration the teacher’s comments and the level of achievement when drafting my next piece of work.
In the personal context, I am able to apply my strengths of being reflective in my curricular activities as well. My experience in Market Day, discussed in more detail (here) proved to be a very significant event to learn from. Market Day was the first project I self-initiated during my term with the Kids4Kids Advocates Leadership Team. Though the extent of our team’s efforts could not be seen at the end, I recognised many areas of leadership in which I could improve on; and consequently tried my best to do better in other leadership roles. For instance, I would recognised the importance of early action-planning in order to ensure that a team could adhere to the most ideal deadlines. In the Junior Achievement Company Programme discussed more (here), I devised an action plan for the department of Production encompassing the contacts for raw materials, information for pricing, methods for production and preliminary production worker shifts. The department saw success in the process of early planning, and ultimately launched the company into a quicker response in sales.
To further sustain my strength in being reflective, I will implement this method in my academic work in the long-term so as to develop a lifelong habit of initiating self-improvement. Looking towards further academic studies, it will be important to keep up the standard of my work to meet the increasing demand for quality in the final year of the Diploma programme, as well as in university studies. In order to enforce the strategy, I usually gather my resources before I start on an assignment, this would include any prerequisite information about the subject such as syllabus information, any compiled research notes from the internet, and any similar assignments I have done beforehand to understand what is expected.
