An essay exactly zero people asked for, Reasons I Think Louis Could Have Written On The New DMA's Song. Obviously I need to preface this by saying that DMA's are a massively talented and successful band who don't need any help writing their ethereal emotional dude anthems, ABSOLUTELY. But! When I played their new single last night I nearly fell the fuck down and I'm still not okay so listen up. First, for context, I'm not completely clowning out of nowhere: just a couple months ago the guy from the DMA's tweeted Louis "lets write some tunes again [after quarantine]". Second: well, the LYRICS and THEMES just scream Louis to me! First of all the absolute punch to the face that is the opening line, "never been so scared to be open," idek know how to address THAT, so moving on: it goes straight from there to talking about "knocking down (emotional) walls", and then after that we get "how can I tell you we're getting better with time and I'm on your side," "never been so scared to be broken," I can't fit the whole song here but it goes on to talk about baby you gotta be strong and have faith and "I just wanna hold it together/ hold it forever," and like, I'm sorry, but I am yelling! Obviously it's also possible that Louis heard the song a long time ago and was inspired by it, definitely! It wouldn't be the first time he paid direct tribute to their lyrics in his own but the thing is this song also has a very specific straightforward and literal quality that really isn't the norm for DMA's songs but that is very familiar to anyone who knows Louis' style, and then you add the themes on top of it? Idk man, I'm just saying....
