So I’m prepping to tutor French-speaking children in elementary math, and I came across this. 

This is not how I learned to do subtraction. However, I learned elementary-level math a very long time ago, so I don’t know if this is what is called “new math” in the U.S. or just French (/European)-style subtraction. 

I welcome your comments.

UPDATE: For anyone who did learn subtraction as in the first image and is wondering how else you would do it, I have included an annotated second image to show how I was taught to do subtraction in the U.S.
