Day 26: Learning Persian

Listening

SaliTalk: 25min. I listened to her mostly as background tonight.

Session: My tutor has been consistent with using mostly Farsi throughout the session. I'm still comfortable with her routine questions and any questions that she asks that I can also read. I've been able to get the gist of her anecdotes but it does take me some time to fully comprehend what she's trying to say. I sometimes translate out loud to make sure I understood her.

Speaking

Session: I'm a lot more comfortable speaking but I think it's also taking away from my accuracy. Not that I was super accurate to begin with. But today I noticed errors and hesitation with structures that I should technically have nailed by now. It also does still take me a while to get a full single thought out. My tutor is so freaking patient idk how she does it.

Studying

Mango languages: 25mins. More subjunctive expressions and some vocab.

Anki: 15mins. Reviewed week3 deck.

The Use of Blogging in Improving Reading Skill

How’s life everyone? May God bless us in every single condition as usual. In the previous post, I talked about the use of blogging in improving speaking skill. Now, go straight I will share to you the use of blogging in improving reading skill.

Blogs are effective for leading classroom discussion. Read an article in a blog may enhance positive perceptions of reading, develops critical thinking skill and encourages classroom discussion. According to Johnson (2010), who explored the motivation for and content of young adult learners’ use of blogs for learning English language arts and literacy skills, find that blogging is beneficial way for students to use the course content information to enhance critical thinking and reading skill.

By reading the blog, students can discuss the content with their friends. We can divided them into some groups, each group consist of 4 or five students. Then they can ask to each other about 5W+1H question. It could be improved their critical thinking and build their habit to ask question in the same time.

Lastly, force yourself to reading a lot and start to discuss the content with you friends. Ask to your teacher if there are any difficulties while reading the blogs. Your teacher will help you to understand your difficulties. Trust me.

The Use of Blogging in Improving Speaking Skill

As I have shared to you before, there are many benefits from using blog in learning English. One month ago, I’m talking about the use of blog in improving writing skill. Now I will talk about the use of blog in improving speaking skill.

Speaking is not only talk through voice, intonation and articulation but it can also delivered in a written text. Salami Aydin (2014) says, “A fairly limited number of studies on the effects of blogging on speaking skills show that blogs are effective tools for developing conceptualization brainstorming, articulation, monitoring, evaluating, self-presentation and information exchange skills; however, these studies show that blogging has no effects on improving learners’ fluency, accuracy, pronunciation, or language complexity.” It clearly stated that blogging has no effects on improving learners’ fluency in speaking skill. Blogging improve learners’ skill in developing their concept brainstorming, evaluating, etc.

Start from now, we as the future teacher may use the blog as the media of teaching-learning process. Understanding that our future students are smarter than us, more creative than us and don’t underestimate them. If we not learn about this media (blog) right now, perhaps your student will underestimate you and they will not get new things from their teacher. Things that learners’ want is learning with something new and challenging. We can use the blog as the media in our teaching-learning process to improve students’ speaking skill.

Teaching-learning Process Use Blog

Children nowadays cannot separate from their gadget and computer or PC. Supported with the internet connection, they can browse anything easily. Focus on their interest, beside they use the internet to help they do their task; they also use it to communicate with other people by social media. We, as a future teacher can take this opportunity to guide our student to use internet wisely. We can lead them to improve their writing practice and communication skill using blog.

I have read the article about Blogging for English-language learners written by Rusul Alrubail. According to Rusul, blogging can tap into students’ and teachers’ utmost communicative potential and help expand and widen learning opportunities. I guest for the future I can use blog in my teaching-learning process. Using blog, the students can spread their ideas not only to their friends but also to a wider audience. The students can share images, links, resources, give their comments and asking or answering question to the other blogger so that their writing skill improved. They can communicate to other blogger over the world, hope one day there will be some experts read their writing and give their comments, oh how happy I am. Imagine my future student can enjoy blogging, it’s SOMETHING … :))

Week One Reflection

First off, I’ll introduce myself. My name is Tamika, and I am a 24 year old education student. This is my first year in this course, however I have previously studied psychology and early childhood units.

Who’s my mob? I grew up in Ferntree Gully at the base of the Dandenong rangers, my mother did a fantastic job of raising my sister and I, and later, my step dad and mum introduced three younger siblings into the family; I am the oldest of 5 siblings.

As a child I always liked make believe play, and had family friends we used to go to Taggerty with and with these friends I would disappear into the bush to ride the motor bikes and pretend we were explorers.

I was never the first kid to get muddy or play in the grass, but I was always up for an adventure or making a fairy garden or a cubby house, so if I had my sister to get the dirty things for me I was up for outside play.

This subject is important to me because I really care about the state of the world. Although I was not necessarily the first kid in the group to get my hands dirty I was always very empathetic; and this is where my passion for learning more about sustainability comes in to play.

I often think about “when I’m a teacher, how can inspire the children to care and respect the earth and it’s animals?”.

I really liked that Jenny included in the first lecture the section about the ‘child of the future’ and how we need to think about that, and what influence we have on our students, and what influence they have on our future world.

These are concepts I often think about, and some of the major reasonings behind me choosing to studying teaching.

Essentially I’m just one of those many people that want to make the world a better place.
