La Lechuza
The Lechuza, or The Owl, is not a cryptid, but closer to being categorised as Hispanic Folklore. The name comes from the likeness of a woman having the body of an owl with a human face. Some depictions are more human like, and some making her almost full owl.
This owl-witch comes from around South Texas and Mexico. Folklore changes in description here; some folklore says she is a witch, who sold her soul for power. Other sources claim that she has risen from the dead - no matter how she originated, it’s generally agreed that she’s bad news.
It’s said she will swoop down at one to catch and kill them - this occurs at night, where she will hide and often mimic a sound such as a baby crying to lure people out.
The most agreed on defense is salt and ones own weapon, or showing her you respect her by leaving out a rope with seven knots for her to see. Folklore conflicts on if you should be kind or swear her away, so it’s suggested you keep your mouth shut around these owl witch women.
