#2881 - Couroupita guianensis - Cannonball Tree
A large tree from the lowland rainforests of the Americas, now grown as an ornamental in other parts of the world. In India and Sri Lanka, this has led to a baffling confusion with the Sal (Shorea robusta) a unrelated tree sacred in Hindu religion, despite the fact that the flowers look nothing alike. As a result, half the hits on google for the latter are actually for the cannonball tree, where the pictures aren't AI-generated slop anyway. Highly annoying.
The flowers grow on racemes borne directly on the treetrunk, and are most fragrant at night. The fruit are large, round, woody, and ideal for cracking open the skull of anybody unfortunate enough to be underneath when they fall.
Another notable species in the family Lecythidaceae is the Brazil Nut, with fruit only marginally less dangerous.
Kerala, India.
