Welcome to SUNHWA ACADEMY.
drop it, she said. and aera stood, quietly. had this girl–yes, the one with the horrid yellow cardigan and skirt that would match if it were two shades lighter–really just told her to drop it?
hadn’t she known that, throughout the entirety of aera’s life, from her delivery into this world until this very point in time– in which she happened to be shooting cold-edged daggers into the eyes of yellow cardigan girl with the crooked mouth and even more deformed teeth–that she had never once dropped anything? after all, she was the daughter of mrs. vogue korea. sometimes she wondered just how inconsiderate people actually were of her situation. she had problems too, and just because she was blessed with good looks and a grade a style to match didn’t make her life any less hard.
yeah, sure, from the outside it was all prada and alexander wang, but from the moment aera heard “mommy got the job,” there was a hell of a lot more “mommy can’t come home yet, honey,” and “i’m busy, baby.” no worries, though, she’d been hearing that exact phrase in mangled reincarnations from her father since before she grew old enough to understand what the words meant. consequently, aera became quite well acquainted with her nanny–22–a nice girl, who would always seem to make aera’s father loosen his collar when she came around. her mother seemed to question the girl’s competence but her father pushed her for the position for some unknown reason, but her mother went with it.
the young nanny would give 12 year old aera makeovers and do her hair and paint her nails so that she looked pretty like the girls she saw in the magazines her mother worked for. she told aera stories about boys she’d met in her travels, recounted arguments she had with her boyfriends–all things a preteen girl probably shouldn’t need to hear, but she thoroughly enjoyed playing “mature,” and she couldn’t wait to delve into the world of boy problems and baseless insecurities.
and delve into the world she did.
her nanny got fired once her mother found out about the occasional blowjob she’d given aera’s father underneath the desk in his office. it surprised aera; she’d never seen her as the lewinsky type. oddly enough, she saw no divorce from her parents, just more dissent, and therefore more alone time for aera. she made sure to fill the free time she wasn’t doing stifling homework with designer clothing and designer boys.
exceptional grades and phenomenal style are what got aera her position in sunhwa as well as baek ho, and she holds herself to an almost impossibly high standard. and that’s why yellow cardigan pissed her off so much. she found herself looking at the girl incredulously, she wasn’t even angered at the situation that ensued this scenario anymore, it was simply the fact that this girl had the audacity to tell her to “drop it” that roused the “bitch” within her. and part of her wished to hiss a few words her way to the effect of “if your parents have enough money to push you through this school, then why don’t they splurge on fixing your dental situation?” but aera was on a diet to better herself physically, so she figured she might as well try to be a better person in general, and something about destroying some second year’s self-esteem seemed “wrong.”
so she gave the girl with the crooked teeth a forced smile, pink lips mechanically pulled upward, “i’ll drop it for now. but just know that the next time your friend the starbucks barista gets my order wrong, it’s going all over his apron.”
