TREKMATCH! # 491 - Star Trek's "Whom Gods Destroy" vs 1997's The Rainmaker
JOHN GRISHAM'S THE RAINMAKER
A young lawyer right outta law school joins up with an ambulance chaser and takes on a case where an unscrupulous insurance company (wha??? Noooo!) has been scamming poor families out of money by basically denying every claim. Well I got news for you - I met somebody once who worked for a big insurance company and their policy was to throw out every third claim so it's not just the imaginary ones that do this! Spoiler here, but the lawyer becomes more and more disillusioned with law practice til he quits at the end to find himself and I presume to become a best selling author. I do wonder what John Grisham's law practicing career was like - he didn't last long and all his books seem to imply justice is nearly impossible, but then again all his books are about lawyers.
STAR TREK - "Whom Gods Destroy"
Kirk and Spock beam down to a space mental institution for the criminally insane but it turns out that an old murderous starship captain slash inmate has taken over! The way he did it was by mentally forcing his molecules into another shape by thinking real hard. Uh ok, that seems plausible. It's got one a those Kirk double scenes that shows up so often in TOS, and it's over the top fun if you just completely forget about science or facts.
Victory to The Rainmaker, so Trek is up 249-242!
