I've finally pinpointed why Nan Heng's story feels so similar. The forced exile, hated by one of his parents, the other parent being partial and biased in favour of another child, the insulting monikers, wanting to return home, unjustly treated, unfavoured despite being the most skilled and suited for the position, cursed by others, loathed, feared like a plague, abhorred, despised, returning to the capital after years, black sheep,... = Nan Heng's backstory is inspired by Wang So's backstory, the 7th Prince and 4th Prince must be brothers from another mothers across different universes!

Nan Heng may seem like he doesn't care but each word stings, aggravating the already festering invisible wounds. He exhibits a rare show of emotions at the people's ungratefulness - he's been risking his life for years, protecting them, bleeding for them, winning every battle, even the most hopeless of them, yet they celebrate the one who lost and endangered their lives.

You can spot the jealousy, hate, pain and sadness at never being good enough no matter how hard he tries. Doesn't it sound familiar to Song Xiaoyu's life?

The story in its essence is about forging your own path and breaking free from the shackles that bind you and from Nan Heng's conversation with the enemy general we find out he's been enslaved for almost all of his life - his imprisonment in the cold palace, his father wanting him dead and sending him to the border as a sort of a prison,...

When he talks about himself, he is sincere and there is a glimpse of genuine pain and resignation in his eyes, he constantly describes himself with word like restrained, disciplined, trapped and confined, considering himself a prisoner who yearns for freedom and when your jailor is your father who just so happens to be the emperor, your only option might be a rebellion. It's not merely freeing himself from the shackles of the script but from the shackles of his past and family.

Feng (his actor's persona) literally means wind/fly, ergo to be free symbolizing and foreshadowing Nan Heng's character arc.

Right, give him more reasons to off you after he's just blown a crater into the battlefield with his spear.

Also, what is there for him to live for but revenge and power when no one loves him.
