PWNZ Like: Meet Me In Cognito, Sing It Loud, Hit the Lights, To Write A Riot!
UK imports Summerlin have their raw pop punk to offer up to anyone willing to listen. The quintet—singer Drew Lawson, drummer Liam Brad, bassist Jake Greenwood, guitarist/backing vocalist Ben Jackson and guitarist Lee Whitaker—formed after their former bands broke up. Their 2009 debut release, So Make Your Move EP, is abundant with funky keyboards and head bang-worthy guitars.
The soft “I've Got a Future And You're Not In It” is about trying to figure out a girl that is sending mixed signals. A confused and heartbroken Lawson sings about wanting the games to stop, tired of deciphering cryptic messages that might not even be there, reminiscent of Meet Me In Cognito's song “Kick Him In The Crotch and Run.”
“Between Seas and Lovers” is a tale of young love, of trying to convince someone to run away and elope from a less-than-spectacular life. Lawson's voice is accentuated by the shimmering keys and funky beats. The lyrics are written from an ignorant viewpoint, but the song is nonetheless charming and romantic.
Summerlin are a band that deserve a listen because they write simple punk-rock songs. Secure your new-them-before-they-were-big rights!
