Every Tuesday, I'll highlight a track that was released before the advent of Tumblr. Each track is chosen both for its influence and worthiness for additional exposure.
Boards of Canada - Left Side Drive
Before their glorious return in 2013 with Tomorrow's Harvest, with each passing year it was looking more and more likely that Trans Canada Highway was the last we would hear of Boards of Canada. There are artists that are the best of their genre, and then there are artists that transcend their genre and completely defy classification. Boards of Canada would undoubtedly be in the latter category. What they do, how they do it, and how it impacts the listener is just not something easily described with words.
When an artist transcends their genre, if they put out material that is merely really good, there's bound to be backlash and inevitably, undeservedly ignored. "Left Side Drive" is not only classic Boards of Canada, the tail end spins and twirls in unique ways, ways a Boards of Canada track had not yet done before. However, Trans Canada Highway was unfairly brushed to the side because it sounded like Boards of Canada. Take a listen to see where "Left Side Drive" belongs in the list of the best Boards of Canada tracks ever. Enjoy.

Song of the Day: Solange - Left Side Drive
Boards of Canada make some of my favourite instrumental electronic music so I was a bit worried when I heard that Solange Knowles had written lyrics and recorded a new version using their track as the backing.
I shouldn't have been worried as she has a proven track record of doing some pretty interesting things. Unlike some of the commentators on this video I don't think that she has ruined this song by any means. If you don't like it the original still exists so it's no biggie.
She's added a good vocal and solid lyrics to an already sublime track and though something is lost we still have a new spin on the old track.
