Instead, she made her way back to the fairgrounds. This being her first time aiding in the preparations for the Unity Festival, nervous did not quite match her mood. What if it did not go well? It was her duty as queen to care for Ehvera. It was her duty as an honorary Ehverian to treat their culture with respect.
Treat her culture.
Rime never forgot Tsunizar. There were still days when she would look out at the mountains and wonder how her old empire was faring. Did her mother still perform as a singer? Did her father ever learn how to make a meat broth? How was Kome? Those questions could be answered if they would just write to her.
That should no longer concern her. Ehvera houses her. She rules the beautiful kingdom alongside the rightful king.
Despite the truth to that—how much she should focus on her new home—Tsunizar will not be a simple memory. Maybe one day she and Bohjin could reinstate friendly connections between the kingdom and the empire.
Maybe one day.

Legacy Excerpt: Chapter 7. Back and Forth
Yzuan held his smile, eyes crinkled with mirth. Eske wanted to believe him, but there were too many reasons for him to be happy. Not all of them were safe. "Word travels of the prince with white hair."
While Eske was able to hold back the urge to shield his braid, he did tense. "I see." What else could he say? Where were his manners? Why should he care? It was obvious to Eske that these people held him in the same light all the other foreigners did. All anyone cared about what his heritage.
The older brother kept the conversation going. "Ah, my apologies, your highness. It was not my goal to make you uncomfortable." He gestured to a third chair at their table. "Would you care to join us?"
Would he? No, Eske wanted nothing less than to run away. He stared at the offered chair, inhaling a deep breath. If he sat there, he would be stuck between two strangers with their own agendas. There were no guards around. No one familiar.
His heart was racing, hand on his necklace again. No, no he could not. He would not. He had to leave. This was not safe. These people—foreigners, were not genuine.
It was just like last time.
And Yras had not stopped staring.

Legacy Chapter Three Excerpt: Travel
Yras sat down upon one of the benches within the town square. He looked up, the clouds still gone, and gazed upon the myriad of stars. They were the same ones he would look at in Ahlnar. The same ones he would stare at in Corjeau, or in Panjuun. They would be the same ones above Ehvera, as well.
Though the ride would take a week to complete, the distance between Janheim and Ahlnar proved smaller than politics would have him think. The same sky rested above them. The same ground crawled beneath them. Here, blanketed by darkness and starlight, Yras smiled.
If not for human treachery, they could be one nation, or have friendly relations upon which to grow. He could make yearly trips to Ehvera the same way he made visitations to Corjeau.
His smile of content lasted only a minute longer when he thought that over.
Why?
It was the question King Azak initially asked upon receiving the invitation. It was the same question that led to him strengthening the northern border, as well as sending his nephews—not even his brother—in his stead.
The slight against Ehvera would not go unnoticed, of that Yras was sure.
Lifting his hand, Yras conjured a flame. Playfully, it danced across his fingers, warm without the burn normally attributed to it. Ehvera would introduce him to a vast cultural experience, but Yras hoped to enlighten them to his own. Fumari triumphed with fire magic, most citizens born with at least some affinity for the element.
The Unity Festival celebrated magic. If they managed to not get evicted from the nation due to xenophobia or disappointment over the recipients of the invitation, Yras hoped to display his own abilities. In turn, he could hardly wait to observe the wonders of life magic. Word spread long ago of the royal family’s exceptional affinity for life magic. If he was lucky, Yras would bear witness to abilities seldom known.

Legacy Excerpt--Chapter One: Disagreement
Entering his room, Eske stood in the doorway with a solemn look. The place was neat, decorated with gifts his brother had brought back during his travels. While Bohjin enjoyed seeking company in foreign lands, Eske did not. Only once had the prince left the kingdom, and he was in no hurry to double that number.
The light from outside lit up his room through the two windows. The flooring was smooth, his bed a step down from the entryway. But that was not his destination. Instead, Eske approached the largest window. He sat upon the windowsill, looking over past both the inner and outer gates of the castle at the market surrounding this side. He could imagine the people bustling about, wearing clothing appropriate for the chill air. Ehvera was bordered by the Fuhranii Mountain Range to the East, but while the tips did have snow, the weather down in the kingdom was not as harsh as foreigners seemed to believe.
Looking out, Eske leaned against the wall, hands in his lap. The gem around his neck continued to glow as brilliant as ever, a perpetual source of light and comfort. The prince felt exhausted with the day's events, and the sun still shone. People were still busy with daily tasks and everyday chores. If not for the fact that going out meant leaving the castle's safety, Eske would not mind joining them for the day. It would do him no trouble to relieve himself of his worries and go about life with a smaller view.
Yet, no change in class would remove the ever-present concern that lay just beyond Ehvera's borders. Eske was not unique in his feelings; he knew that. However, would it not be better to have a general fear instead of a personal one?
It mattered little, because the fear was there regardless of the relationship one had to it. Ehvera hated foreigners, and with good reason. Each and every one of those citizens, out there minding their day as usual, would side with Eske in his dispute with their king. How could Bohjin not see that? How could he ignore the needs of his own people? It was his own ancestor that cursed them like this, after all.
Eske's fingers ghosted the gemstone on his chest. Jule brought this upon her nation. She brought the unwanted attention he hated so much. She was the reason kingdoms preyed at their borders.
Kingdoms like Panjuun.

Legacy Excerpt: Prologue
The woman moved to his side. "She's right, you know."
Not looking at her, Xuun lifted his hood and walked towards the entrance. "You misunderstand, Meirr."
She clicked her tongue. "I don't see how. All she did was confirm what you already knew."
"Not quite." At the entrance to the cave, rain continued to pour. The capital city of Panjuun, Queto, was barely a kilometer away. After all, the cave they stood in was just at the outskirts of the forest. He turned his smile on Meirr, who copied him and pulled up her hood. "It is not the information I needed, but the circumstances surrounding it. Nature oracles seldom do not know the happenings of humans. Yet, whatever Ehvera and Fumari are planning, our dear friend remains ignorant. What does that tell you?"
She looked away with a frown. "Everything Ehvera does is a secret, though. I don't see why this is so different."
"Ehvera is not a secret to nature. Whatever their king is planning has escaped the Oracles' ears. Do you know what that means, Meirr?"
"We're going to Ehvera, aren't we?"
He looked away, over at the tree their horses remained tied to. His smile grew. "Let me speak to King Itheir. But yes, I have no doubt you are correct."
Though she groaned behind him as they stepped into the rain, Xuun twitched with excitement. After years of silence, it was time to return to the Kingdom of Ehvera.
The Gem of Life awaited.

"Oh, we're just dandy, Your Lordship. Thank you quite much for the load of chores you've dropped. We really do appreciate being kept on our toes like this. Keeps things interesting. Very good, My Lord."
I love writing snarky maids.

This was not how Ollyah envisioned her betrayal would occur.
For years, she waited, expected it. Her suspicions surrounded her guards, Jove and Don. They would hurt her, ambush her, for reasons she would never know. Betrayal only comes to light after the event takes place, after all.
This, however, had nothing to do with her or her guards.
The panic that swept the kingdom shocked her. Knocked down from the wind, a moment passed before she registered what happened.
They were under attack.
