He doesn't necessarily mean to keep the place dark for when Dennis arrives. Robby's just out of the habit of turning any of the lights on. No next of kin for the state to dump his debts on top of, and all his bills are paid, anyway, but he thinks that it's a considerate touch.
But he feels it, when Dennis arrives. Feels the way the kid's hind-brain jumps into alertness, the way he blinks away the dark when Robby opens the door and has him pass underneath an arm to enter. Libates in the way his own nervous system mirrors; his pupils wide and dilated, jaw slack, he doesn't take his eyes off the centre of his chest. People telegraph their next move from the middle out. You can see everything from there, like ESP.
He feels like he's hijacked the kid's body already, just from looking. Feels like he's already spread his seeds too far in. Saw it today, in all the little tics and turns of phrase Dennis has picked up over the last 10 months. Feels in control. Feels like this is the only thing he has control over. He's done one thing right, here. Here is the proof of the lightness of his soul. Here is the aching, boy-shaped wound he carries in the air around him. His whole frame warps and wraps around that hollowness inside him.
He has to stop calling him 'the kid'. He'll only psych himself out.
