fear and fallacy - quiet company

i tried a million times to understand it, and i thought i did. but at the bottom of this, there is a panic, and i bought right in. but the problem with me and the problem with you is that we're all just so scared to die. but i know my time is coming, so let's bow our heads.

A quiet night, and you've got your head on his lap. Something was happening. Something was coming, and it was so, so soon. Doc was happy, you knew that. He talked about how glad he was to die, but, at the same time, you were scared to see him go. He was someone you had come to appreciate the company of, althought you rarely trusted him. You respected him, maybe. He was so resolute. He knew what he wanted, and how to get it in a myriad of ways. He even had you. You were fighting more often. He hadn't been fighting back. There were little tears in his suit from today's tribulation. You didn't plan on fighting with him, but people had mentioned your enlistment. They'd talked of how little time you had. You didn't have any time. You were a witch of time, and you didn't own any of it.

You clutch your fingers into his suit coat as he works, stitching up a cut you got from shattering the teapot in the air. A shard had imbedded in your cheek, and he was gently removing it. He was, strangely, gentle in moments like these. Maybe it was because he knew just how nervous you were. The last time he'd ben patching you up, you'd talked about something. When Doc dies, will he dream? You hoped he wouldn't. You didn't want him keep living. You didn't want to dream either. Maybe your Lord would obliterate the both of you. Maybe you both just wanted to be nothing more than peons, but he'd just succumbed to the desire after sweeps of existence.

He was so old. One day, you'd be as old as him. Older, even, but you wouldn't possess his kind of power. He was like a god, and you were no one.

"What makes a god bow to a lord?" you ask him, and you wish, as you always do, that you could see an expression on that bland cueball. The scratch doctor's voice echos in your head, a dull laugh. He doesn't answer your question directly. He thinks he's so funny, doesn't he? The Socratean method always seemed to be his preference. Ask questions you know the answer to, never stray from a formulaic method lest you risk actual interpersonal conversation. The doctor was genial, but he was far from being someone who got close to others. Once upon a time, you used to be just like him. "Are you saying a lord can't be a god?" he replies, and an idea sinks in that makes you shake a little. Your Lord and Master, a god? Was that even true? He senses the fear the question sparks in you, and he gently moves to hugging you, pressing that hard shell of a head against your forehead. It's cold, and oddly lifeless. This is the closest to comfort you will ever get. "Stop asking questions if you don't want the answers, hoo hoo, especially if you have them yourself." "I'm sorry." You aren't sorry. You find it refreshing that you fear the Lord of Time. After all, the Doctor's time is running out, and that is frightening too.

Could be better, all things considered, but also could be much worse. My young charge is upset at the moment, and it is somewhat concerning, but it will pass.
