Thoughts on Grey’s Anatomy: 15X15
I liked this episode for the most part. It wasn’t as strong as it could have been, but it was good. At the beginning of the episode we find out there’s been a fire at Catherine’s party and then are taken back in time to five hours earlier. Catherine throws shade and says she didn’t want a party. Says the woman who specifically asked for a party. She was a real jerk to Jackson and all of her family and friends this episode.
There was great fashion in this episode that I really enjoyed! The wardrobe department really outdid themselves. I loved Maggie’s green jumpsuit with the gold jewellery. It was stunning! Bailey and Catherine’s outfits were also amazing! Jo’s outfit is also gorgeous! I love the safety pin top with the pink jacket! I like Amelia’s outfit too. That grey silver blouse looks really nice on her. In the evacuation scene at the end there’s a woman in the background wearing slippers, a funky patterned hair towel, and a bathrobe with cats on it! It’s epic! Maggie’s purse, which we catch a glimpse of at the end, is Devine!
Jackson shows off his privilege when it’s revealed he’s so privileged he doesn’t even know how to make a candle stand up straight in its holder. There’s some great African Art in the background of Jackson’s place that I really love. Bailey had some great lines in this episode. Some of my favourites were, “You shoulda lead with limo!” and, “She’s your problem now.” I love Bailey. She and Catherine spend most of the episode enjoying themselves in Catherine’s limo and it’s amazing! More of this please! At Catherine’s encouragement Bailey buys her $799 blender with her golden butt cork money! Haha! Catherine confides her fears in Bailey and Bailey speaks the truth to Catherine! I love her!!! Also Bailey listing a robot attack as a possibility is my new favourite thing!
I hated pretty much everything surrounding Meredith and DeLuca dating. There were a few moments that were enjoyable to watch but most of it was just cringeworthy. We find out that Meredith and DeLuca are officially dating now. Yuck. She tells Alex and she looks a scared kid whose misbehaved. Spoiler Alert: If you feel or look that way when you tell your BEST FRIEND that you’re dating someone you should NOT be in that relationship.
Alex then calls Meredith on her BS about DeLuca. He thinks the fact that they’re dating is laughable. It is. Alex speaks for all of us here. But he’s still supportive of her as her friend and he hopes he makes her happy. Because Alex is a great best friend. I love their friendship. Helm is a true idiot in this episode. If more than one person has the same last name you include their first name as well. That’s just common sense. And Alex’s Mom Helen Karev appears! Welcome back!
We also find out that Betty has recovered and that her parents who suck are taking her and Leo to go and live with them. We never see a Social Worker or a judge or a lawyer in any of this. Super unrealistic. Betty’s parents continue to be insensitive jerks throughout the entire process. Also the man they cast to play Betty’s Dad has clearly never picked up a baby before. Jennifer Grey was phenomenal as Betty’s Mom, but the actor playing her Dad was poorly cast. Betty leaves without saying goodbye and it breaks Amelia’s heart. Back at the party we find out that Maggie’s nemesis KeKe wrote an article about her but made herself the star. That bitch. She’s the gift that keeps on giving. Alex shows up checks Jackson on his privilege and then goes to play some ping pong! I love him! Meredith and DeLuca arrive at the party. As they are standing in the hallway we find out that for once Meredith’s house is empty because her sisters and children are elsewhere. DeLuca then declares that he doesn’t want to go to a party in Catherine, Tom, and Amelia’s honour because Meredith’s house is empty and he wants to go back and have sex with her instead.
Remind me how I’m supposed to like this guy? He actively dislikes being around her family and friends and is super selfish all the time. Ugh. Amelia is Meredith’s Sister in Law. She’s there to support her. She’s also a friend of Catherine’s and Jackson’s. Richard is the only father figure she’s ever known. Her and Tom are on friendly terms. She’s going to this party to support them. She loves them. They are her family and DeLuca has no interest in being a part of that scene for some reason.
Tom and Teddy arrive at the party and are making out in the foyer just as an upset Amelia and Owen show up. Cue the drama. We find out that Tom surprised Teddy with a trip to Palm Springs before the baby comes. Which is really sweet! He really cares about her. Awww! Owen decides to be a jerk to everyone in response. While at the party we see Meredith talking to Ellis on the phone! She calls her Elle Belle! I love it! She’s such a loving Mom. She is nothing like her parents. I’m glad we’re learning more about Bailey and Ellis this season. We find out that Zola and Bailey are at a sleepover and Ellis is with her babysitter Tanya at her place and both Maggie and Amelia are at the party which is why her house is currently empty.
Amelia walks up to her and she tries to tell Amelia about her and DeLuca but doesn’t get the chance because Amelia’s upset about losing Betty and Leo and how Owen’s being a complete jerk. Meredith’s is supportive because she loves her. Next we see Teddy rightfully upset because of how awkward and difficult Owen is making everything. Tom comforts her and Jackson overhears him making a joke at exactly the wrong time and his reaction of, “Why?” is perfect and hilarious. Jo and Helen arrive and converse in the hallway with Alex. He tells Jo he didn’t see her calls because he was playing ping pong! While they’re talking Helen wanders into the party.
Owen continues being a jerk as Amelia attempts to talk to him on the balcony. He asks if she’s okay as if that’s normal. Why would Amelia be okay right now? She’s sad and angry. They both are. Amelia says some really important and truthful things and Owen completely doesn’t listen to or hear her. She calls him on his crap and it is fantastic! Yes! I am here for this! And Bokhee’s in the background! Hi Bokhee!
Owen continues to be selfish, makes everything about himself, and ignores what Amelia is saying. Why are they together? Then he completely gaslights her like an asshole. Run Amelia Run! Teddy and Maggie talk about the article and Teddy is very confused by Maggie’s response and it is hilarious! Teddy’s response to herself is, “I do hate this party.” Teddy is great. I love her. Meredith speaks the truth to Amelia about Teddy. However, I disagree that Amelia should have to make peace with it. She doesn’t have to make peace with the fact that the person she loves is in love with someone else. Neither did Cristina or Beth. Teddy shouldn’t have to put up with this either. She does have another option. She can step away which is what she eventually decides to do.
Alex and Jo finally find Helen talking to DeLuca on the balcony. She knitted them wedding present scarves! My heart is bursting! We then see more of Bokhee who is there with her husband Jay. I wonder if Jay is her husband in real life or an actor? Bokhee tells Jay in another language that based on his actions DeLuca is in love with Meredith. I think it’s interesting that the use of the word ‘love’ is always one sided from DeLuca’s end. He says it but she doesn’t. Other people say it about him but not her.
To me that indicates that he’s in love and infatuated with her but she’s just having fun dating him. That can only end in disaster. DeLuca doesn’t seem very concerned that his mentor isn’t doing well. He seems very self absorbed these days. Meredith does seem happy though which is nice. She’s been sad for a very long time. Owen, Jackson, and Richard have an “I hate Tom Koracick” club meeting by the food table. Jackson is so self absorbed he makes inflammatory comments about Tom which only eggs Owen, whose been drinking quite heavily, on further. Recognize the signs Jackson! Sheesh. Jackson says Tom took advantage of April during a vulnerable time. However, we the viewers know that Tom did not take advantage of April. Jackson believes that because he’s never asked her about it.
Richard’s pissed because Tom keeps making flirty comments to Catherine which is valid. But the party is partly in his honour so raging on him right now is in really bad taste. At this point Owen is super jealous of Tom and Amelia has totally figured that out. When he goes on about Tom to Amelia she defends him because they are friends and tells him that he was there for her after her tumour. Owen is further pissed off that Tom was there for Amelia after her tumour but Owen wasn’t there for her by choice. Even when Megan urged him he wouldn’t go. He has no one but himself to blame for the mess he’s gotten himself into.
He calls Amelia insecure and completely gaslights her again! The difference is that Amelia is now sober, clean, and sane. She can finally see Owen’s behaviour for what it is. Wrong. Amelia calls out on this and reminds him that she encouraged him to go to Germany and that was only 7 months ago not 7 years like Owen seems to be pretending. Now he’s acting like she’s crazy for speaking the truth. What were hearing from Amelia is wisdom not insecurity.
She tells them she’s done and that they’re done. You go Amelia! You do you! This is Amelia at her best. It’s been a long time coming. She deserves stability and happiness and she’s not going to get it with Owen. I hope her and Link get together. After Amelia says this and leaves Owen acts all offended as she doesn’t have the right to leave him. What an asshole. Aw Jo and Alex are wearing the scarves Helen made them! I hope Meredith gets a scarf. Alex and Jo are worried his Mom might be able to split from reality. His line, “She shouldn’t have needles,” is the best. It’s not funny but it is. We cut to a scene with Meredith and DeLuca making out in Jackson’s guest bedroom. Yuck. I hate this scene. She’s setting boundaries and he’s pushing them. No does not mean convince her which is what he’s trying to do.
DeLuca gets a call from Carina, but ignores it. If Carina’s calling this late from Italy he should answer it. It’s probably important. Be an adult not a horny teenager DeLuca. And then Richard walks in on them! Why does this always happen to Richard? Meredith and Derek. Maggie and DeLuca. Now Meredith and DeLuca. He has the worst luck. As the saying goes, “If a relationship has to be a secret you shouldn’t be in it.” Meredith looks like a kid whose been caught doing something she shouldn’t like she did when she told Alex.
She tells Richard that Alex knows as if that makes a difference. She’s making excuses. If you have to do that and you’re this embarrassed you shouldn’t be dating that person. She does seem happy though which is good. They leave and go back to the party. DeLuca for some reason thinks it’s weird that Meredith is flustered. Why does DeLuca think it’s weird that Meredith is flustered after what just happened? His reactions make no sense.
Also why didn’t the staff take the spring rolls back out of the oven? That’s what they are paid to do. Maggie is still pissed about the article so Webber gives her some Webber Wisdom on taking her anger and making it productive. Then Alex’s Mom smells the fire but Alex thinks it’s in her head. Now we’re back to Owen and Teddy. He’s pissed that she’s taking this vacation and tries to make it about her putting the baby in danger. She points out in response that they have hospitals in California too.
Not only do they have hospitals in California, but Megan, Nathan, and Addison live there. Addison’s is one of the foremost neonatal surgeons in the country. If Teddy went into labour in California. She would have excellent care. He’s way out of line here. She wants to take a nice vacation like a normal person. He doesn’t get a say in this. Then he calls Tom a dirt bag even though he doesn’t know him at all.
Tom comes over and he and Owen start to argue. Catherine and Bailey finally arrive at the party and Jackson chooses this moment to be an oblivious ass to both Alex and Helen and Teddy, Tom, and Owen. Tom calls Owen on the fact that he’s done nothing to get to know him even though Tom and Teddy have been dating for several months now. Owen completely ignores this fact and starts yelling at Tom as if he knows anything about him.
This culminates in Owen telling Tom he’s not a father when he knows absolutely nothing about him in a room full of people at a party in his honour. Wow. Just when you thought Owen could not be more of an asshole he is! Tom’s finally had enough at that last comment and punches him hard. I don’t condone violence but I understand why Tom punched him. I think I would’ve too in that situation. He is a father. He lost a child. He’s not preying on Teddy. He will be in their baby’s life. Those are the facts and Owen is being an unforgivable asshole here.
To which Amelia responds from afar, “Okay. I’m done.” Yes Amelia. You go! You deserve better. And so does Teddy godammnit! Alex, Jo, and Helen are leaving just as Helen spots the smoke and points to the very real fire. Alex is so excited his Mom is right and she’s not hallucinating. I love him! His smiling face as they evacuate is the best! After the building’s been evacuate we find out from Ben that DeLuca and Meredith started an almost fire in Jackson’s oven with those damn egg rolls! Hahaha! Turns out the tray was plastic not metal.
The party breaks up after that and Alex comes over and introduces him Mom and Meredith to each other. It’s a beautiful and so well done. I think it’s interesting how DeLuca is framed out of the shot. They keep emphasizing how DeLuca doesn’t want to be a part of Meredith’s family or group of friends. But she does seem happy though for the time being so that’s good.
Maggie’s still has her glass of wine! We get some hot and sexy banter from Ben and Bailey! Catherine apologizes to Jackson by having the two of them and Richard and Maggie go get trashy foot and eat it in her limousine as they drive around town to celebrate. Catherine takes Maggie’s side on the KeKe/article issue and it’s awesome. They decide to spend the time after each of her scans, good or bad, like this. It’s very sweet.
Owen returns home to find that Amelia’s there because Betty’s parents brought Leo back! They decide at Betty’s request to give Leo back to Owen permanently so that they can help Betty stay sober, recover, and heal. Betty tells Amelia she wants to be a real teenager and make normal mistakes. She says goodbye to Amelia and hugs Owen, Amelia, and Leo one last time and then leaves with her parents.
Then we cut to Jo and Alex’s loft and he’s set his Mom up on the couch for the night. They’re still worried about her. Awww and there’s a picture of Meredith marrying Alex and Jo on their nightstand! We cut from there to a scene of Meredith and DeLuca arriving at his house. Carina pulls up in a car and she and DeLuca start arguing in Italian. This is why he should have picked up her calls. This is not the fun time Meredith came for.
Oh and it’s DeLuca’s Dad! This is why he should have picked up Carina’s calls! As Meredith says, “The bad times are going to find you all on their own ...” Now let’s take a look at next week’s promo. Oh it looks like they’re developing Jackson and Link’s friendship! Cool! It also looks like we’re getting some good jolex scenes and we get to see more of Alex’s Mom! It also appears that Amelia does in fact call it quits with Owen and call him on his BS! Yes! Finally!
Until next time.
Au revoir!
Betty Bomb
This is one of my stories based off the 15x12 synopsis “Betty drops a bomb on Owen and Amelia.” Entirely written from Betty’s POV.
I knew I shouldn’t. I knew Amelia and Owen would be disappointed in me. And like I really don’t want to get high, but I really, really do. I had been doing so well since I got out of rehab, I really thought I had kicked it this time. But yet, here I was in front of his door.
My hand was shaking as I brought it up against the wooden door, there was more paint peeled off it now then the last time I was here, I knock twice and wait. It isn’t long before I hear the familiar sound of the door chain sliding and the door opening.
I bring my eyes up to look at his face, he looks the same, tall and slim, yet strong at the same time, his jet-black hair that curls slightly and falls into his eyes, his deep dark blue eyes. I hate the smirk that he has on his face, like he knew I would be back. I can hear the cockiness in his voice as he greets me after running his eyes up and down my body. “Long time no see. Come in.” I drop my head as I follow him inside the apartment. “Same thing as last time?” He asks heading over to where I know he keeps the drugs.
New Traditions
Hello, lovely people! Wishing you all a magnificent Thanksgiving! As usual, I’ve decided to write a holiday-themed fic. I hope you all enjoy!
New Traditions
“Dr. Shepherd, you’re needed in the trauma bay.”
Amelia did her best to put on a smile for the nurse who was calling to her down the hall. She was just the messenger; it wasn’t her fault. “Could you please page Dr. Nelson?” Amelia asked. She sincerely hoped she had succeeded in keeping her tone calm and friendly. “I’m not on call today. I just stopped in to check on a couple of my patients, but I’m trying to get out of here to go enjoy the holiday with my family.”
“I understand, and I’m really sorry, Dr. Shepherd, but there was a pile up on the highway, and Dr. Nelson is in the middle of a surgery that is projected to last another 4 hours. They really need a neurosurgeon down there to help triage. Do you think you could spare a bit of time?”
Amelia winced. She wanted to help. She really did. But Owen, Leo, and Betty were all waiting for her at the Thanksgiving dinner at Meredith’s house, and it pained her to think that she would be missing out on the first Thanksgiving dinner she could ever remember that was going to be the way it was supposed to be: a proper turkey dinner with all the fixings shared with the people you love without any anger or drama. She’d never even had this when she was growing up, let alone in her adult life, and she wasn’t about to give it up. On the other hand, the people in the trauma bay had just had their Thanksgiving plans wrecked far more than hers were about to be, and she felt like a total jerk for wanting to walk out on those people so she could eat some turkey and make fun of the quantity of pie Owen would inevitably eat. “Okay,” she conceded. “I’ll head down there, but Nelson is going to need to take any cases that end up being surgical. I can’t bail on my family all day long.”
“Thank you,” the nurse said with a grateful smile. Amelia headed off to the trauma bay without another word.
Immediately upon arriving in the trauma bay, Amelia was pressed into service. “Trauma bay 2, Dr. Shepherd,” called the nurse who was in charge of managing the steady stream of patients and providers. Amelia obediently filed into trauma bay 2 just in time to hear the paramedic handing off the patient.
“32 year-old male. Motor vehicle accident. Restrained driver in a vehicle that was struck from the rear. No other passengers in his vehicle. Blunt injuries to the head and abdomen. GCS is 12. Bilateral large-bore antecubital IVs established in the bus. 50 micrograms of fentanyl and 150 milliliters of normal saline administered in the bus. Airway is stable.” The patient was transferred smoothly to the gurney, and Amelia immediately grabbed her penlight and took her place at the head of the bed to begin her assessment.
The next 45 minutes seemed to fly. She went from room to room, assessing each patient and determining their neurological risks. A few had been sent for head CTs, but thankfully none of them presented with an obvious neurosurgical emergency. She was now walking into her last consult from this pile-up. She was about to step into the room when a familiar face came into view. “Owen, what are you doing here?” she asked. “Where are Betty and Leo?”
Owen stopped and whirled around to face her. “I got called in for the pile-up. They said trauma was slammed and they needed an extra pair of hands. Betty and Leo are still at Mere’s house. Betty said she and Leo would be fine without us, and Mere, Maggie, Alex, and Jo are all still there with them. I’m hoping none of these cases end up being surgical so I can get back there soon.”
“Unless this person needs emergency neurosurgery, I’ll head there right after this one,” Amelia replied. “I’m not even on call, but Nelson was in surgery, so they asked me to come down and help. I told them I’d help assess patients, but if there’s any patient who needs neurosurgery that doesn’t need to be done immediately, I’m passing that off to Nelson.”
Owen nodded. “Shall we get in there and see this guy so we can get back to the pie?” he asked with a small smirk.
She nudged him good-naturedly. “It’s always about the pie with you,” she said already on her way into the room.
Amelia was extremely grateful that Owen was the trauma surgeon on this last case of the day. Though she worked well with nearly everyone in the hospital, there was something to be said for chemistry. They knew each other’s tendencies, and they could work seamlessly around one another, rarely even requiring words to stay out of each other’s way and anticipate each other’s next moves. Thanks to their ability to work efficiently, they managed to finish their assessments within 5 minutes. “Your head seems just fine to me,” Amelia said, smiling reassuringly at the middle-aged man who looked quite anxious.
“So I don’t need brain surgery?” he asked.
“Nope, no brain surgery,” she confirmed.
“Actually, no surgery period,” Owen chimed in. “It looks like you don’t have any injuries that are really serious. We’ll have you taken back to the ER, and they’ll give you any fluids and medications you need. You should be out of here by this evening.”
The patient breathed an audible sigh of relief. “Oh, thank you, doctors. I really appreciate it.”
“It was our pleasure,” Owen replied on both of their behalfs. They each shook hands with him and wished him a happy Thanksgiving before stepping out of the room. As soon as the door shut, Owen steered Amelia off to the side. “Imagine that: things actually worked out in our favor for once. It looks like neither of us have to go to surgery. Would you like a ride back to Mere’s place, or do you want to drive yourself?”
Amelia was about to respond when their conversation was interrupted by a frantic-sounding intern. “Dr. Hunt, we just got another one in trauma bay 1, and the FAST showed free fluid in his abdomen. Can you take him back to the OR with us?”
Owen didn’t even attempt to hide his frustration. “I’m not the trauma surgeon on call today. I just stopped by because I was told trauma was slammed, but I was at dinner with my family. Can the on-call trauma surgeon take this?”
The look on the intern’s face told Owen he wasn’t going to like the answer. “Dr. Baker is already in an ex-lap that looks pretty complicated, and they’re worried that this patient we have might be bleeding briskly. They told me that they really need you to do it.”
Owen turned back to Amelia and winced apologetically. “I’m so sorry about this. Do you mind going back to Mere’s house alone for a little while until I get this patient under control?”
Amelia smiled widely. “We’ve been tag-teaming for months now. This is nothing new. Go do your ex-lap, and we’ll see you in a little while.” She pressed a chaste kiss to his cheek and then turned and walked out of the trauma bay.
She had just gotten changed back into her street clothes when her phone chimed from its place in her purse. A quick glance at the screen told her that Betty was texting her. She swiped absentmindedly at the screen as she began to walk out of the hospital.
I need a meeting.
Amelia was already calling Betty before she even had time to think about it. She didn’t wait for Betty to speak when she answered the call. “What happened?” Amelia blurted out.
“I’m so sorry,” Betty gushed, the panic evident in her voice. “Seriously, I’m really sorry-”
“Betty, calm down,” Amelia said gently, slowly. “Just tell me what happened.”
Amelia could hear the deep breath Betty took before she began to respond. “It’s nothing. It’s just that everybody here is drinking wine and beer and stuff. And now people are starting to get kinda buzzed. I thought I was okay, but then I went back to the kitchen for more veggies, and I wanted so badly to grab the bottle of wine. I was already grabbing a glass before I even had time to think.”
“Did you have a drink?” Amelia asked, her tone calm and measured.
“No,” Betty replied. “I looked down when the glass was in one hand and the bottle was in the other. I panicked, so I set them back down on the counter, ran out the front door, and then I texted you. God, everybody probably thinks I’m a freak. I just ran out of the house like a crazy person. I’m so sorry.”
“Betty, stop,” Amelia said, her tone firm and commanding. “Do not apologize. You did the right thing. Thank you for texting me. I know it’s hard to walk away and ask for help when you get a craving like that. I’m so proud of you. I’m coming to get you right now, and we’ll go to a meeting. Do you think you’re okay to go back inside and grab Leo, or should I call Meredith and have her bring him out to you?”
“No, I think I’m fine. I can get Leo.”
“Please stay on the phone with me while you do,” Amelia requested. “And stay out of the kitchen. Just grab Leo and come straight back out of the house. I’ll be there soon.”
“But what about everyone else?” Betty asked. “Isn’t it rude to just leave like that without saying anything?”
“Don’t worry about that. Everyone will understand. Your health comes first. It always comes first. Go back inside, grab Leo, and wait outside for me. You don’t need to worry about anything else.”
-
When Amelia arrived in Meredith’s driveway, Betty was standing on the porch staring vacantly at Leo’s covered bassinet. Amelia quickly killed the engine and walked up to meet Betty on the porch. She took the bassinet from Betty as she spoke. “Everything’s going to be okay. Just come get in the car.” Betty nodded slowly before following Amelia back to the vehicle.
With practiced hands, Amelia managed to get Leo fastened into his car seat quickly. When she climbed back into the driver’s seat, she found Betty staring out the window with wide eyes. “Hey,” Amelia said softly, grabbing Betty’s left hand. “Thank you for texting me. I know this probably seems like a lot right now, but we’ll get you through this. I am so proud of you for recognizing that you were struggling and asking for help before you had a slip. That is huge progress.” Betty’s smile was small, but it was enough for Amelia.
When they arrived in the parking lot of the small church, Amelia wasn’t surprised to find quite a few cars in the parking lot. Thanksgiving had a tendency to be a rough day, both because of the free-flowing alcohol and the family drama that tended to be prevalent at Thanksgiving dinners. After putting the car in park and shutting off the engine, she turned to face Betty with a smile. “Do you want to grab Leo, or do you want me to?”
“I’ve got him,” Betty said softly, already beginning to get out of the car. Amelia nodded before going to the backseat, getting Leo out of the car, handing him to Betty, and leading the way into the building.
Once they had settled into a couple of chairs with coffee in their hands and Leo on Betty’s lap, Amelia turned to check on Betty. “Are you doing alright? Do you want me to go first?”
Betty nodded gratefully. “If you don’t mind.”
Amelia smiled kindly. “Of course not.” She waited until a few people had shared before speaking up. “I’m Amelia, and I’m an addict,” she began. “Thanksgiving can be so hard. It used to be awful for me. God, I could bore you for the next hour with stories of poor choices I’ve made on Thanksgiving throughout the years. It just feels like the perfect storm. There’s booze everywhere. There’s too many people around to really notice if you make a bad decision. There’s family everywhere. And for me, that is a big problem. Well, it used to be, anyway. My relationship with my family is complicated, and Thanksgiving was always the time when we were all reminded that everyone else is a rockstar, and Amelia still doesn’t have her shit together. They were never trying to be mean. They love me. I know that. But it always seemed to give me that little nudge I needed to have a drink or pop some pills. Or both. This year is different, though. This year, I’m spending the day with people I love and who love me. People who bring out the best in me. So I haven’t had any cravings today, and I am so grateful to those people.” Amelia didn’t turn toward Betty as she reached over and squeezed her knee, silently offering her thanks and support.
The room was silent for a moment before Betty spoke up. “I’m Betty, and I’m an addict. This is my first Thanksgiving in recovery. I didn’t realize how hard it would be. I thought it would be amazing to have dinner with people who care for me and treat me well and don’t judge me. And it was amazing. I feel like this is what Thanksgiving is supposed to be. But then I ruined it. I saw everyone drinking, and I started to get the urge, and I couldn’t control it. I almost slipped, and then I went outside and texted my sponsor.” She threw a glance in Amelia’s direction. “So now we’re here at a meeting instead of having dinner like we should be because I’m too weak to say no by myself.”
After a few more shares and a recitation of the Serenity Prayer, the meeting came to a close. Amelia waited until they were in the car and on the road to speak to Betty. “Betty, I know we normally try not to talk about our shares outside of the meeting, so please stop me if you don’t want to talk right now, but I really want to say this to you.” Betty said nothing, so Amelia went on. “It kills me that you feel bad about what happened. Because this is exactly what is supposed to happen.”
“What, a junkie teenager keeping you from the stuffing and green bean casserole?” Betty bit out sarcastically.
“No,” Amelia argued, ignoring the snarky tone. “Thanksgiving is supposed to be about the people, not about the food. I’d much rather sit in some old, dingy church sharing love, acceptance, and grace with a beautiful young woman who has brought so much richness to my life than sitting around a fancy table eating delicious food, worrying more about what people think of the casserole I made than the people I’m sharing it with. Thank you for texting me. Thank you for trusting me with your struggles. It means a lot. You have given me so much to be thankful for. I couldn’t imagine a better holiday.”
She glanced sideways at Betty, and she could see the emotion setting into her eyes. Luckily, Amelia’s phone rang, giving Betty a reprieve from having to respond to Amelia’s words. A glance at the screen told Amelia it was Owen calling. “What’s up?” she asked into the phone.
“I just finished up with my ex-lap. I’m changing out of my scrubs. Should I meet you back at Meredith’s place?”
“Change of plans,” Amelia replied. “Betty, Leo, and I are on our way home. Meet us there.”
“Okay,” Owen said. His voice sounded a bit confused, but he didn’t ask any questions. “I’ll see you in a little while.”
Owen ended up arriving at home just as Amelia and Betty had begun to rummage through the pantry and refrigerator. “What’s going on?” he asked while picking Leo up out of his bouncy seat.
“We’re planning Thanksgiving dinner,” Amelia said, turning to face him with an amused grin as she pulled a box of macaroni and cheese out of the pantry. “I’m thinking mac and cheese with a side of canned pears. What about you, Betty?”
Betty shut the freezer door. “I found some pizza rolls and fish sticks. And mint chocolate chip ice cream for dessert.”
“Perfect,” Amelia said. “Owen can, you start preheating the oven while I get going on the mac and cheese?”
Owen still looked utterly confused by the situation, but the look on Amelia’s face told him now was not the time to ask questions. “Sure,” he replied slowly before making his way to the oven to begin working on his assigned role.
30 minutes later, Owen, Amelia, and Betty sat around the table, their plates filled with the comfort foods they had found around the kitchen. Leo sat in his high chair between Betty and Owen, happily grabbing after a few pears with his hands. “Turkey is so overrated,” Amelia lamented. “I vote we do pizza rolls and mac and cheese every year. This is awesome.”
“Just as long as Betty cooks the pizza rolls every year,” Owen responded.
Amelia narrowed her eyes as she turned to face Owen. “Excuse me, what is that supposed to mean?”
“It means you burn them every single time you make them.”
“Are you kidding me?!” Amelia asked incredulously. “I slave over a hot oven to make you food when you’re too caught up in your football game to feed yourself, and this is the kind of thanks I get?” She dipped her index finger into her mac and cheese and swiped some of the cheesy sauce down the side of his cheek. “Screw you!” Betty burst out laughing as Owen dipped his finger into his own mac and cheese to retaliate. Leo chose that moment to slam his hands down into the pear juice on the tray of his high chair, and pretty soon everyone had a bit of food on their faces, hands, and clothing.
Once the excitement had died down, Owen and Amelia set to work cleaning up the kitchen while Betty took Leo to the bathroom to clean the pear juice from his face. “Seriously, can we do this again next year?” Owen asked while putting away the baking sheet. “This was really nice.”
“Let’s do this every year,” Amelia agreed, and she couldn’t stop the smile that split her face in half. There was really something to be said for new traditions.
Thoughts on Grey’s Anatomy: 15X14
I liked this episode more than I’ve liked the last two. It was more fast paced and went by quicker. The episode begins with Meredith in a two day surgery. She’s about to break the hospital’s record for the longest surgery like a badass! She’s wearing her purple scrub cap today! Alex is super supportive and wonderful. He’s such a supportive and loving person. His character development is my absolute favourite on the show.
He wants to be there to cheer Mer on but he has to deal with the mass OD because he’s Chief. Alex is the kind of friend we wish we all could have. We get an interesting exchange between him and Jo about Meredith. Jo still hates that Mer and DeLuca are dating (don’t we all?) and Alex says DeLuca cheering Mer on is not a thing. Jo thinks it is because they’re dating. Neither of them are happy with the situation. All of which is very telling.
Then a woman comes in saying she and her son were playing at the park and she lost track of him, but she’s wearing a yellow triage tag. Alex and Jo endeavour to help her and a kind homeless man brings her shaken, but otherwise okay son to the hospital. We learn from him that the mother is in fact an addict and that she lied to Alex and Jo. This is a hard case for them because of their personal connection to it.
If it weren’t for the kindness of a local homeless man something worse could have happened to her son. It’s revealed that she went to the park to buy drugs and took her kid with her. Her husband was completely unaware and is horrified. Jo urges the husband to get his wife help, but Alex disagrees. He speaks from experience and tells the husband to make his kid his priority and to not let his wife near him until he’s sure she’s clean. It’s nice that we’re getting to know more about Alex and his past.
Meanwhile, Meredith continues with her surgery unaware of what’s going on in the ER. Helm assists before taping out to go work in the ER and DeLuca assists as well. Bokhee calls her Wonder Woman and it's awesome. DeLuca is actually being kind of a decent human this episode which is a nice change. Meredith breaks the record by over three hours and is ecstatic.
Link’s back this week and I really enjoyed watching his character. I hope we see more of him. Link also lays down the law with Schmitt and Nico. Him and Jackson are starting to become buddies too which is cool. Nico and Schmitt are working together. They have different ideas of breakfast and it’s adorable. I’m liking the two of them together. It’s very cute. We also learn more about Schmitt like the fact that he is a comic book fan. Schmitt has some great lines in this episode and he’s hilarious. We also get to see the Denny Duquette Memorial Clinic again which is cool.
We find out that Jackson wants to go camping and Maggie hates camping. This is why you ask first. We get a great scene with Bailey and Teddy talking. Bailey spoke the truth a lot this episode which was great. They are totally BFFs now and I love it! Then the drama gets underway. A young addict is tossed out of a car which almost runs Bailey and Teddy over. This is why Good Samaritan laws are so important. There’s been a mass overdose at a local park. It’s going to be a busy day in the ER.
We learn that Betty’s parents have somehow acquired custody of Leo. This entire Leo custody situation makes no sense and is totally unrealistic. Also Owen and Betty’s parents don’t seem to give a damn about Betty. Only Amelia does. What’s wrong with them? Betty does eventually show up at the hospital with her boyfriend Linus. They are brought in by ambulance after over dosing.
They’re taken to the clinic, but then Betty goes into distress. Link springs into action and carries her to the ER to be worked on. Link’s the kind of doctor you want in an emergency! Linus comes too and we learn that he’s not only her boyfriend he’s also her dealer and Leo’s father. Betty needs heart surgery so Teddy and Bailey take her while Owen, Amelia, and her parents look on.
There’s a nice scene between Amelia and Link here. We get to see more depth from Link this episode. There’s also a great parallel to Meredith’s talk with Dr. Marsh here. I wish he had stayed. It also looks like they could be building something between Amelia and Link. Then suddenly blood pools out from nearby door! Then open it to find Linus on the floor bleeding from having injected himself. Link tries to revive him, but he’s unsuccessful and Linus dies.
Link blames himself and Amelia’s face crumbles and she starts to cry. They don’t know each other very well and he’s totally unsure of what to do. He does his best to comfort her. Maggie comes to see Jackson to talk about postponing their camping trip. He tries to convince her to go. This is the kind of conversation you would have away from a patient. This becomes obvious when Maggie reveals that Betty is in the hospital and that Amelia needs her and Qadri reveals that the patient she and Jackson are treating is the homeless man who brought the kid in. Jackson gets his privilege majorly checked.
Betty’s dad continues to be horrible. Seriously what is this guy’s problem? No wonder she ran away. I noticed they’ve been using the smaller waiting room recently. Betty makes it through surgery to everyone’ relief. Meredith’s promptly falls asleep against a wall. Jackson tries to find a safe place for the homeless man to go. He can’t so he ends up giving him all of his camping stuff until he can get a permanent home. Betty opens her eyes as Owen, Amelia, and her parents look on.
Alex talks to Jo about his past and she brings him a hot chocolate to cheer him up. I love how Jo is there for Alex. Ben and Bailey have a heart to heart about beauty and it’s adorable. The episode ends with Meredith curled up asleep on a stretcher after a long day of work. Wait so Maggie just left Meredith sleeping on a gurney instead of driving her home? What the heck? DeLuca sees her and decides to wheel her into an empty patient room, put a blanket over her, and turn out the light. What DeLuca does here is right on that borderline between cute and creepy.
Next week is the record breaking episode! Should be fun!
Until next week.
Au revoir!
Thoughts on Grey’s Anatomy: 15X13
Based on the promos I expected not to like this week's episode and unfortunately I was right. First off, what month was this supposed to be? It was February last episode but now it looks like summer. I hated DeLuca in this episode. He continued his previous behaviour of being creepy and stalking Meredith around the hospital while being a real jerk. At the beginning of the episode Meredith tells him she wants to speak to Maggie about dating him and rightly so and DeLuca is all about himself and what he wants and shows zero regard for her or Maggie’s feelings or wishes.
The one bright spot in this episode is that Teddy and Tom’s relationship progresses and it’s a real joy to watch. There are also some great Alex and Jo moments from the fact that they can’t keep a plant alive and it’s hilarious to Jo being overjoyed for Alex when his picture is put up on the Chief wall. After seeing this Bailey decides to throw a fit because she gave up her job and now she doesn’t like the results. So Webber comes in with some wisdom. We get to see Derek’s picture up on the wall of Chiefs and we get a Mark Sloan reference. I miss them.
We get some adorable Jackson/Harriet and Owen/Leo scenes before finding out from Amelia that Betty has run away from rehab. Meredith then tries to talk to Maggie about dating DeLuca but Maggie doesn’t hear her because she’s distracted because her med school bully has just shown up as a patient. Maggie eventually decides to recruit Jo to help with the case because she’s a good person and doesn’t want to be the person that kills her. Maggie also has some fantastic lines about her nemesis.
Maggie struggles to find a way to save her nemesis’ life because her condition is so dire and Meredith shows up to offer help and support. When talking over the potential procedures Meredith makes a suggestion and Maggie replies that that’s not how the procedure is done. To which she replies, “Right, but I’m not asking how it works. I’m asking can it be done?” This is why we love Meredith. This is why she wins awards.
She also tells Maggie she’s got her back where her nemesis is concerned and they decide to do the procedure together. After they successful complete the surgery Maggie and Meredith have a nice heart to heart about DeLuca. Which is what they should have done about Riggs. Maggie gives her blessing and then tells Meredith she’s got her back which is very sweet.
Jo goes at Meredith for standing up Link and she’s totally right! Link deserves better and her dating DeLuca makes zero sense on every level. I really don’t know why they are pursuing this storyline or how anyone can root for them when DeLuca’s behaviour is so creepy and off putting. At one point Meredith is in the process of teaching Qadri when DeLuca decides to be SUPER creepy and stare at her until it distracts her from her work and then leaves. What a creep! Meredith then sets boundaries with DeLuca because he’s being completely unprofessional. He proceeds to act like a child and then gaslight her. She then calls him on his BS and he’s forced to admit she’s right.
The main patient storyline for this episode is that someone fires gunshots at a parade and a young member of a Scottish highland band is injured. His Dad is understandably beside himself. The episode uses this case to show why common sense gun laws work and how other countries have done it. Canada has similar laws to what the patient’s Dad describes and were better off for it. The young marching band player lives and everyone is relieved. Then there’s another case with a female patient who is polyamorous and is married and has a boyfriend and Teddy sees herself in some of her situation with Owen and Tom.
Betty / Brittany’s parents arrive and it’s a complete disaster. The don’t know about Leo and the situation escalates from there. Also they have a very strange dynamic. Betty’s Mom does most of the talking for the whole episode. Her Dad barely says anything. After they find out about Leo she also asks for permission from Amelia and Owen to hold him. We also find out that their last name is Dickinson not Nelson. So Betty Nelson’s real name is Brittany Dickinson. That makes Leo’s last name a lie too.
Amelia and Betty’s Mom have a heart to heart and Amelia has some great words of wisdom for her about her daughter. Towards the end of the episode we circle back to to the baby Leo situation. Betty’s Dad whose been mostly silent for the entire episode chooses this moment to speak up. He announces they’re going to take Leo with them despite the fact that her Mom said they were getting the hotel room for if Betty shows up. He thanks Owen and Amelia for everything they’ve done and says they’ll take it from here despite the fact their drug addict daughter is still missing.
There are a LOT of things wrong with the conversation that takes place here. First off, you can’t just take a baby from a hospital without proper documentation. That’s child abduction. The nurses/day care workers can’t legally hand him over to people they don’t know. He doesn’t even share their last name because Betty lied. By law they have to call child services even if they are family. Laws differ from state to state and country to country and I’m not an expert, but this is pretty basic stuff that standard across the board. Also you can Google it pretty easily. There are a lot of great resources out there. Which apparently not a single writer on this episode used.
Owen completely flips out and even though his approach is really aggressive he is right here. Leo doesn’t know these people. They are complete strangers to him. All he would do is freak out. Suddenly changing his environment with people he doesn’t know would be traumatic and definitely NOT in the best interests of the child. Betty’s parents don’t seem to care about this at all. Also Owen’s legally fostering him. He can’t let them take him without getting in trouble himself.
The Dad then starts yelling about how he doesn’t want Leo with another drug addict revealing that Betty’s Mom is a complete bitch for betraying Amelia’s trust and a truly horrible person. Amelia confides in her about her own struggles and why she’s been so motivated to help Betty and Leo. Betty’s Mom decides to tell her Dad who goes ballistic and uses that against them. No one wonder Betty ran away. Who wouldn’t? They’re horrible parents and people.
He’s completely out of line! Also Leo’s at daycare. He’s not with Amelia and she’s not legally fostering him. Owen is. Also Betty’s mom says NOTHING during this entire exchange. Which is very weird. It’s starting to seem like Betty’s Dad is abusive or at the very least controlling. I wonder if that’s part of why Betty ran away? Owen tells them they can’t take Leo and he’s not going to let them. Owen’s really aggressive here, but he is right. Legally he can’t let them take Leo and it IS kidnapping. Again Betty’s Mom says nothing and Betty’s Dad pulls her away saying they’ll be hearing from them.
How has no one called child services by now?!?! That should have been everyone’s first step here. They are going to have a field day! I hate how child custody is so inaccurately represented in media. There are so many misconceptions. Though courts usually side with biological relatives (which is stupid) they just screwed their own case by attempting to kidnap their own grandchild. That makes them a flight risk which a court would definitely have to consider. Which means Leo could get pulled back into the system again. The one whose hurt is Leo and they don’t even care. What jerks.
Then Owen decides to crank the stupidity of this situation up to 11 and yells at Amelia as if this own thing is her fault. Which it’s not. It’s the mother’s fault for betraying her trust and being such a horrible person, the father’s fault for not understanding child custody laws, and it’s partially Betty’s fault for lying. Amelia hasn’t done anything wrong here except not go through the proper channels when she took in Betty. However, seeing as she lied about everything that might not even helped in the long run.
Now he’s acting like she’s on their side when she was just trying to help. At least she can see the nuance of the situation. Owen’s being a real ass here. She asks him to not take it out on her and he completely ignores her as usual. And then proceeds to blame a 14 drug addict with horrible parents for the fact that he may lose access to the child he’s been fostering. Classy. Amelia deserves so much better than this and so does Teddy and Leo and Betty.
Bailey tries to take her job back because she’s mad. Alex isn’t having it. He tells her no. They signed a six month contract and he’s got two months left. Alex lays down the law here and good for him! He should. Bailey concedes mad, but proud. Then there’s a great scene with Teddy and Tom where she tells him that her and Owen are good friends, but that’s it and that what her and Tom have is so much more. He invites her inside to help devour his crispy bacon BLT like a true gentleman.
Meredith pages DeLuca to the Attending’s Lounge and he’s an ass once again. He acts as if Meredith owes him something. As if Maggie is a stupid roadblock instead of a human being. He’s behaviour is what is truly unbelievable. In the end she decides to actually go out for him. God knows why. Now we have to keep enduring this nonsense for several more episodes when we could be getting to know Link (or some else) a lot better. Their kiss is awful. It’s so awkward and gross. Ugh.
Onto next week’s promo. Good news: Link’s back! Bad news: It look like Betty over doses! And it looks bad. It looks like Betty might actually die! We also see Amelia sobbing which is heartbreaking. She's been through so much and Betty's been working so hard.
That’s all for now folks!
Until next week.
Au revoir!
“why is mom sad?”
