I got behind and only just caught up on season 8a - the Abby+Tommy of it all had me on. the. floor. Like the way my jaw dropped 😭
I find twists like that super satisfying but I completely missed what everyone else thought bc I was trying to avoid spoilers (pretty surprised I managed to avoid seeing that one) - what did you think of that reveal initially? and then, what do you think now (especially with the way bucktommy situation is currently)?
hi hi ty for sending this!! my jaw was on the floor too when i saw it in the episode, and after the shock wore off i was mad about it, because it's SUCH a retcon of s1 canon and makes all the characters look stupid. like first of all abby's tommy was her *boyfriend* not her fiance of two years, and then there's the whole what was the point of tommy about to marry a woman if he's not going to bring her around the 118 and go by dispatch and sell the lie that he's trying to make himself believe??? it's also so pointless in the show because if they did want to make the abbytommy of it all believable, they could've at least stuck to their own canon and made tommy simply abby's boyfriend briefly, because that doesn't change anything about how they used the abbytommy reveal to pull apart bucktommy. so in canon i hate it bc it's just tim minear trying to make himself look smart and exposing himself further as having no plan for the show.
NOW all that being said, the fanon of it all makes me LOVE the abbytommy backstory. i definitely pick and choose when i want to incorporate it into my own canon, because the special thing about tommy kinard is that he has a multitude of backstories <3 abbytommy made me fall back in love with abby (i liked her in s1, was neutral about her in s2, and then disliked her after the non-apology to buck in s3). but the added context of tommy's cruelty to abby (yes i'm using that word bc he did hurt her and he's honest enough to own up to it) puts abby's cruelty to buck (bc her ghosting buck who waited thinking she was coming back and then showing up with a fiance was cruel) into perspective. i love how this fandom has found the nuance within the abbytommy relationship and made it something very interesting and fun to pick apart. i love the angst of abbytommy, and i think they did love each other in a way, but tommy could never love abby the way she needed and abby always knew there was something missing, and i think the stress of their relationship added to her mom being sick really broke something in abby that buck helped fix.
and the one thing that's canon to me and i won't accept criticism on is that tommy loved patricia (abby's mom) and always cared about what happened to her.
