After watching TwoSetViolin’s video of special violin performances, I discovered the violinist David Nadien. Apparently, Leonidas Kavakos told the boys that Nadien’s playing made him want to quit the violin. Nonetheless, Nadien never became as famous as many of his counterparts. Here he is, performing the Swan Lake Solo with Leonard Bernstein conducting.

Leonidas Kavakos playing Prokofiev#s 1st Violin Concerto. I will be listening to this more often, since it’s a masterpiece of beauty and fantasy.

Leonidas Kavakos playing one of my favourite Violin Concertos from Johann Sebastian Bach, BWV 1042 in E Major. There is a wonderful array of feeling here, from the lively opening movement to the weeping second movement, to yet another dance. Standard concerto form, but elevated through Bach’s finely-developed love for interesting thematic material.

A star-studded cast play Bach’s brilliant Brandenburg Concerto No. 3! Leonidas Kavakos, Maxim Vengerov, Pinchas Zukerman (violins), and Mischa Maisky (cello). No offence to the players I did not immediately recognise. 

This is a superb performance! A great offering for 21/03/2020, the Julian date for Johann Sebastian Bach’s birthday. I have already shared Kavakos’ performances of pieces from the E Major Partita for Solo Violin. 

One of the best recordings of Bach’s Allemanda from the D Minor Partita came from Maxim Vengerov, and I have also watched his masterclass on playing Bach’s G Minor Violin Sonata. 

I still love Brandenburg 3 best out of all the Concerti. I think it is Bach’s finest example of contrapuntal writing. The even weighting and consistent theme development throughout is particularly satisfying to the intellect, as well as to the soul.
