Here's something new I want to try on this blog: Menagerie Monday. On Mondays I will post an animal, either a resident or foster, that currently lives at ACS. This will include personal pets as well as rescued animals. I will give you a little background on the animal, and a few facts about the species and/or it's husbandry.

Today's featured critter is my leporinus, POTUS - you'll have to forgive the less than stellar picture, he is camera shy. His name is POTUS because his owner's name was literally Donald Trump. He was surrendered with a second leporinus who was smaller and less healthy, likely from bullying from the big guy, who unfortunately did not last long past surrender as he never rebounded from the stress of transport and changing environments. POTUS however did just fine and has now been with us for several years (I'm uncertain of how many but clearly some time after the election).

Like most leporinus and like his namesake, POTUS does not play well with others and is a bit of a bully. While leporinus are omnivores and eat a wide array of plant matter, they are opportunistic and will snack on smaller fish; POTUS was actually surrendered because fish in the original owner's tank kept "disappearing" and the other leporinus was failing in health. While leporinus are not necessarily a solitary fish, they really don't do well in small numbers - either get one, or at least six, or one individual inevitably starts picking on the other. The problem with getting six is that these bad boys can reach over a foot on length, so unless you have one hell of an aquarium, probably stick with one.

POTUS is a very shy fish until feeding time and likes hide in his cave or plants, so he's not much for viewing. I'm not sure if that's just his personality, or if all leporinus are shy fish. All leporinus DO require a large, well filtered tank; they are river fish who like well aerated, fast moving water, and due to their large size require a decent bit of real estate. Most husbandry sites suggest a minimum of 50g, but because they are so long I think something with a greater width would be more appropriate so they can, you know, turn around comfortably. POTUS might be a little stunted from the 30g he was kept in before we got him, as he still measures around eight inches.

These guys aren't great beginner fish between their size, temperament, and sensitivity to water quality (they need a nice clean habitat and do not handle much ammonia/nitrite/nitrate). But they are awfully pretty, and a fish I would have never been interested in owning if one wasn't surrendered. Thankfully I'm seeing these guys less and less in chain pet stores (I am of the opinion that chain pet stores should not carry ANY "tank busters" or delicate fish because most customers are impulse buyers with small tanks), so hopefully no more will find themselves needing rescue in my area any time soon.

As the Great Fish Room Move continues, today we moved a 90g, a 40g, and a 55g, as well as moving the 110g stock tank out. I'm glad I still had some koi shipping bags left over from when I moved down to AL from NY with all of my fish; our rescued leporinus, POTUS, is about 10" now and wouldn't fit the large size bags from our LPS. Here he is acclimating. It's the only time you'll see him because he's dashes into his flower pot.

How does one get involved into the “killing life” in your dragon world?

Ambra does so because it's all she knows and doesn't believe there is a way out, Leporinus is HEAVILY in denial about some stuff of his past and desperately wants to believe this is The Right Way

Ofnir is a fucked up dude who likes power and to inflict pain and sufference just Because and uses said ideals to "excuse" the stuff he does
