i actually considered making the duff fic sapphic at first, but i couldn’t quite make it work for this specific story. a lot of steve’s role is tied to him being the popular guy at the top of the high school hierarchy, and so much of that dynamic is wrapped up in masculinity, popularity, and compulsory straightness. eventually i was like, you know what, i’m queer but i’m allowed to write straight people too 😭

if i had to imagine girl steve, though, i think she’d be a lot like chrissy cunningham or a young karen wheeler—popular, pretty, a cheerleader, very conditioned by appearances and social expectations.

for sapphic stonathan specifically, my brain always goes straight to the film but i’m a cheerleader. steve is megan. jonathan is very much graham. this is a fact, not up for debate 💘
