I don’t know anything about him besides that he’s popular among girls on tumblr, what did he do?

I don’t really know anything about him besides the fact that he has a horrible name. I’ve never watched anything with him in it.
Well he is probably best known for being the star of BBC's Sherlock, a modern adaptation of Sherlock Holmes in which he plays Sherlock Holmes. It's very big on tumblr, you may have noticed and if you haven't I am jealous.
Sherlock is a tricky one, a part of me doesn't want to say it's a bad show, but a lot of the time it is and it's good points; that it's Sherlock Holmes at all (I love Sherlock Holmes), the style and look of the whole thing, Rupert Graves is in it, definitely do not make up for it's short comings which include a lot of misogyny and racism and queer-baiting and this tired tired tired idea that because someone is a genius they are allowed to be douchebag and that's awesome. The nail in the coffin for me involved Irene Adler, my literary hero, the woman who beat Sherlock Holmes being reinvented as a "lesbian" who just needed some sexy Benedict Cabbagepatch to convert her and who lost and who needed saving by said Mugwump. Series creator Stephen Moffat, current head writer of Doctor Who, who you may have previously heard me complaining about because he is Satan a little bit, has come under fire a little for writing the show this way and B.C defended him at an awards show. When he introduced Moffat he had this little speech where he mentioned that Moffat was married so he couldn't be a misogynist har har har aren't people silly, they just don't recognize his genius.
More recently he has complained in interviews about "posh bashing" and how hard it is to be an upper class wealthy person. He's spoken about the London riots in a, well:
"I'm a Prince of Wales Trust ambassador, so I'm all about giving youth an education, a voice and a chance to not take the wrong road," he says. "But those eejits saying they're doing it for socio-political reasons? Fuck off, no you're not, you're on a jolly and you're getting away with it. It makes me want to belt them, make them lame for a bit so they're dependent on other people's mercy…
He's also commented on Elementary, the new CBS modern version of Sherlock Holmes with Lucy Liu as Watson (so far it's amazing and I'm not just saying that because I love her), saying he told his friend Johnny Lee Miller he'd rather he didn't take the part, he thought the idea was ridiculous but he understood that Johnny has to keep his wife in fancy clothes or whatever.
Basically he is a rich, posh, successful, incredibly privileged guy who whines a lot about how hard it is to be all of those things, who says ridiculous stuff and stars in a ridiculous show and a lot of people love him but I can't for the life of me figure out why because his face is like Cthulu's face.
