Sin of Despair Charlie Au headcanons
So, ever since I saw that there's technically an eighth Sin of Despair in Christianity, and THIS was the desciption:
I IMMEDIATELY thought "Wow, it would be interesting if it was CHARLIE who was the sin of Despair in the Hazbinverse?" And have given some thought to HOW that would work and what she'd be like . So, here are my ideas.
Charlie's primary job as Sin of Despair is to break the souls of Sinners. To make them crack and breakdown into tears and pain over the realization of both how they fucked up their lives on Earth and how they're now trapped in a miserable existence of indulging in vice to avoid their real suffering in Hell......and then getting them to move on from their past mistakes and not waste their time constantly sinning to then assist them in becoming productive members of Hell's society and integrate with the Hellborn population. Like with the hotel in Canon, VERY few sinners want to take her up on this, but she always tries. And has had a decent number of successes.
This Charlie is BLUNT. She's still nice, still kind, but because of her job she's absolutely fine saying painful truths or harsh opinions with a smile on her face. Like, with Lucifer, she's perfectly content telling him, as nicely as saying how much she loves him, that he and Lilith weren’t great parents and his avoidance of her coupled with Lilith's neglect had a deep negative effect on her and they can't ever change how much they hurt her, but they can work to do better. She won't outright tell someone her opinions unprompted, but if someone asks, she will answer with painful honesty.
This Charlie believes in the idea of "Hell is Forever" but not in a NEGATIVE sense. For her, it means that all sinners of Hell are welcome to join her home and become part of Hell's society. The gates of Hell are ALWAYS open to anyone. They just need to come to terms with their suffering first. For this Charlie, a happy day in Hell can't be possible until all the sinners break and crack under the weight of their lost lives and eternal damnation and have a nice, long, cathartic cry to make themselves feel better. Then pick themselves up to start building their new lives. In her eyes, every sinner is just a hard shelled egg she needs to tap or hit emotionally to make them crack open, then take their good bits, and with her help, make them into happy and productive Sinner Omlettes.
She also has numerous responsibilities that don't involve sinners. She runs Hell's Theatre troupes, Actors guild, movie productions, novel publishing companies, cartoon studios, and music performances (because those forms of art also cause sorrow to then bring joy) as well as bankrolling numerous artists, Cooks, poets, actors, sculptors, and musicians (all professions people channel despair and joy into). Even having her own streaming service of "Despflix."
She's known by many for being "coldheart" because whenever she tells a sinner all their faults and gets them to break down, she does it with as kind a tone and as big a smile as the regular universe Charlie has. Even seeming to grow more gleeful when they finally crack and fall into broken sobbing and feelings of despair. But thats just because shes happy knowing that the minute they break into pieces, she'll be able to put them back together even better
Charlie has a lot of other titles besides either "Princes of Hell" and "Sin of Despair". Including "Princess of Sadness, The Coldhearted one, The Bringer of Despair, the Soul Crusher, the Breaker of Sinners, The Light That Brings Darkness, The Blackstar, and the Bitch of Barreness, Bleakness, Sorrows, and Suffering" (yes, that last one is real and sometimes used on royal documents). All of these give her a reputation to Hellborn as frightening as her fathers...until they meet her and see how nice she is. Then, they see her break a sinner and get why she's got the reputation
Is fully open about her own despair. How she's sin with no ring, a princess who sits with Kings and Queens. A ruler none of her subjects take seriously. The weak dsughter of pride. She acknowledges how much these hurt but tries hard not let it get to her or effect her job...somewhat.
Her general clothes she wears are a black outfit outlined with gold that resembled a tailed conductors outfit, only the buttons are small golden tragedy and comedy masks. Around her neck is a choker with a black star outline in gold. Her hair would also be slightly different, having a large bang that covers one of her eyes and the tips of her bang and the bottom of her large braid would be black.
Would absolutely LOVE Vaggie even more when she learned of her past because her sinking into despair only to pull herself up is a perfect distillation of her ideals. She'd outright consider Vaggie her "Muse of Despair."
After hearing about Alastor made her own microphone/cane for when she wanted to sing. Its black with the top microphone part being gold and shaped like an upside down teardrop.
Doesn't drink or allow drugs or alcohol to any sinners she's trying to break or any employees. In her own words drugs and booze are just "things that create fake temporary feelings of happiness that allow demons to pretend they feel more happy with themselves then they are and avoid being able to fully sink into their inner despair and sadness."
Employees mostly lower level demons like Hellhounds, Imps and, of course, lowly sinners to help run her businesses. But also has some Goetia in her employee too. As she says, rich or poor, anyone can sink into despair.
