Silver Locket

(A fic for @levtuve since its inspired by her mermaid thingy. I LOVE IT) “Hey Jimmy James!” The merperson with the silver tail looked up from his place on the rocks. He spotted a magenta figure with incredible messy hair. Well apparently to humans it was a common style but James called bullshit on that. The human known as Thomas had to have gotten a cloud or something on his head for his head to be that fluffy. “Hello Thomas. How are you?” James asked as he watched the taller man walk over to sit next to James. “Im fine. Been a long day but im happy to have a break.” he said as he sat down. He was holding some sort of colorful cube. Or was it a box? James still didnt understand many human terms but he was learning. “Whats that?” he asked curiously. “Oh this? I got you somethin' hon.” Thomas said with a grin as he handed the cube-box thing over to James. James studied the box closely. It seemed to be covered with what humans call “paper” but it looked to be a little thinner. The paper was pigmented a really lovely blue color. James wondered how they got it that color. There was a small weight in it. He didnt know the box was hollow. What an interesting human contraption. “You're giving me a box?” James asked. “Well its not really the box. More like whats inside of it. You should open it.” Thomas said, his grin was still present. 'Oh! Its like a clam!' James thought as he understood. He didnt know you could put things in a box.

He held it up over his head similar to how he would break a clam open and was about to smash it when- “No no no! Not like that James!” The box was suddenly taken from him. He looked at Thomas with confusion. “Watch. Ill show you how to open this.” Thomas carefully tore the beautiful blue paper (which was a shame) and opened the box to reveal a smaller box. It was smaller, thinner and longer than the previous box it was contained in. It was also covered in some sort of red fuzzy material. James experimentally ran his index finger over the soft fuzzy box. “What is this? It feels weird.” James asked. “Its velvet daring. Now open it like how you do after you uh...smash a clam.” Thomas said while giving him the fuzzy red box. James understood and lifted the lid, which was attached with metal hinges, to reveal a silver necklace of sorts. The part where a shell or a pearl would be was a silver round thing. It also had hinges on it. The design was swirls that reminded James of ocean waves. In the very center of the silver circle thing was a single pearl. “What is this Thomas?” James asked while experimentally opening the silver circle. The circle opened to show a hollow and empty inside. “Its called a locket. You usually keep pictures of people you care about in them.” Thomas said with a smile that would put the sun to shame. James blushed slightly and inspected the jewelry. It truly was beautiful. “I dont think I can take this. Merpeople find all human artifacts to be dangerous.” James said with slight disappointment. James noticed Thomas deflated a little. He sure the human understood but it was a shame James couldn't take such an amazing gift with him. James frowned slightly and put the locket on (with some struggle) and held the circle part in his hand. “To heck with the merpeople rules. Im keeping this.” “James I dont want you to get in trouble.” Thomas said.

James allowed a slight smile to come to his face. “They already fine me strange. I can just live somewhere closer to here. Maybe in a sunken ship or a cave near the ocean floor. And I'd come here to visit you.”

Thomas grinned happily and took one of James's hands. “I'd love if you lived closer to me. Maybe if we wait a bit you can live with me.” Thomas said with a grin. “You live in the ocean?” James asked with a head tilt. Thomas chucked and kissed James's hand. James blushed from slight embarrassment. “Nah hon. Humans have things called bathtubs. I'll explain if it happens.” he said. James smiled a bit more and nodded. “I would be happy to live with you in..whatever you live in.” Thomas grinned widely and placed a smooch on the merman's forehead. “I cant wait love.”
