I remember when I was young and first reading this book I, predictably, hated one specific character for being manipulative and a stereotypical "bitch". But now, I can respect the manipulation as something done for the sake of her own survival in this novel. She's still not my favorite character, but she's far from the worst, and I can respect the position she's put in and the intricacies of survival.

I just wish it didn't take until she gauged one of the main characters eyes out for him to stop pining after her like some love sick idiot.

Spoiler Alert: It’s just Lord of the Flies, but with a love triangle. Also, a dude stabs someone over a bottle of laundry detergent.

The way these kids interact with each other and the narrative reminds me of a nature documentary or one of those documentaries about different cultures. And of course, it's all so painfully High School kids and does, certainly, show its age in certain terminology. Still better then certain other things I've read though.
