Austrian Emperor Ferdinand the First liked dumplings. When told that they were food for peasants, he replied, "I'm the Emperor and I want dumplings!" The 19th century Viennese then began using this phrase as a way of saying they were indulging a random whim. "No, I didn't need a new hat, but I'm the Emperor and I want dumplings!"

We need to bring this back. Nobody is allowed to say they're 'letting the intrusive thoughts win' ever again. I bought a bag of sour skittles today. They'll make my mouth all raw but I'm the Emperor and I want sour skittles dumplings.

As much as I make fun of the English language, it is fun to recognize the slight difference between synonyms or words that ostensibly should mean the exact same thing.

Undoubtedly and doubtless, for example, should be interchangeable! And yet for reasons I am unable to describe, their tone is very different.

Becky’s mom led one of Lexicon’s only authorized combat platoons. As a council member’s daughter, she carried herself with a sharp, regal confidence, but she was known for being genuinely kind. After her daughter’s disappearance, she shut down emotionally and committed herself to strict adherence to every Lexicon rule.

Her husband, also born to a council family, had always been the rule‑perfect type. But when his wife fell into grief, he became the bright one in the house (upbeat, lofty, positive) trying to keep both of them from collapsing under the loss.
