The conflicting storylines of Clark and Lex in Smallville are so insane. Like

Lex: The abuse and manipulation I've suffered at my father's hands have led to permanent trust issues that I am working to overcome whilst struggling with the burden of my family's nefarious legacy.

Clark: damn I wish my dad would let me play football :/

Lex: Every woman I've ever loved has either died or betrayed me. I seek out the love I lost when my mother died in meaningless hookups and sometimes I wonder if I'd be better off dead.

Clark: my crush has a boyfriend that's not me :/

Lex: *gets shot multiple times and left on the street to die, has a hallucinatory dream where he is finally loved and accepted only to lose that love due to lack of power and resources, ultimately driving him to the conclusion that the only way to keep the people he cares about safe is to increase his already vast levels of money and power*

Clark: *meets Santa*

I really want to leave us with this because it is such a powerful scene, but I love how it not only nails down the relationship between Lex and Lionel, but also Clark's with Jonathan and Kal-El with Jor-El.

What if Lexmas but Lex and Clark swapped places? Instead of Lex learning lessons by losing Lana, it's Clark doing so before he has to make that decision again in the 100th episode. And instead of Clark doing the Santa run it's Lex buying toys for all the kids and talking the real Santa down from the roof. I feel like he would have actually realised more about the kind of wholesome, philanthropic power and influence he could strive for doing good in real life, than from the dream that he knew from the start was not what he deserved.
