2018 LF16
La NASA recientemente detectó un asteroide de 213 metros de diámetro que podría chocar contra la tierra entre 2023 y 2117, ocasionando una explosión de 50 megatones, equivalente a la bomba más poderosa creada. De acuerdo con la IAU (International Astronomical Union), el asteroide nombrado 2018 LF16 se desplaza a 15.13 kilómetros por segundo y fue identificado por el Laboratorio de Propulsión a Reacción de la NASA (JPL) en junio del 2017, con 62 posibles trayectos de colisión durante el lapso de tiempo indicado.
Sin embargo, la NASA también anunció que aún así las probabilidades de que el asteroide se estrelle en la Tierra son muy bajas (una en 30 mil millones de probabilidades).
Puras promesas... Tabloids have always taken great liberty with headlines but some of the current coverage of the asteroid known as 2018 LF16 is really taking things to the next level. The near-Earth rock has been the subject of numerous headlines touting NASA’s assessment that there are 62 potential “risk trajectories” that could put it on a collision course with Earth sometime between 2023 and 2117. However, looking at the hard data paints a much less worrisome picture.The asteroid is quite large, with an estimated diameter of over 200 meters, and if it did indeed strike our planet it would be a bad day for the planet. The good news is that there’s virtually no chance that such a thing is actually going to happen...
