“okay...” byungho jointed down the notes that was given to him. when it came to a learning environment, byungho was very analytical. he likes to break things down and understand what was being taught to him so that he could perfect and be the best that he could. not just in his field of studying but with everything he does. byungho was a perfectionist.
the male scratch his head with furrow borrows. ‘what’ was the word that was just running through his head. this was harder than any of his classes at university. “how does one even ‘invision’ playing a role?” a loud thought he had. maybe he need to learn this more so doing then analyzing on a piece of paper.
“excuse me,” he called out towards the person next him. “what do you think the coaches meant when they said ‘envisions yourself in the role as the character’?” using his pen to scratch his head, byungho was still twisting around trying to understand. out of all the workshop even if he was bad at dancing this workshop was probably the hardest. “what if i’m not a evil mafia boss in real life, how am I suppose to pretend?”

if there was something that mirae had in spades, it was her confidence in singing (even though it was a plain miserable feat of hers and hers only--to be able to sing every single key on the white keyboards of the piano, completely out of tune).
in fact, the actress had taken to spending her days of boredom in her own apartment with every single possible rendition of musicals: from romeo and juliet to the sound of music (needless to say, courtesy of her extra self, she employed herself effectively in all roles), prepped and arm with her blankets and cartoon pjs upon her frame. it had been something that she was intent on doing, ever since the announcement that they had to work on their musical acting.
surely, everyone would now see the genius that is yoon mirae, she thought to herself gleefully, basking in her personal satisfaction and imagination of her figure gliding dramatically across the stage, clad in a mix of costumes.
she grinned to herself, squinting slightly at the piece of paper that she had written upon her partner’s name for the workshop. byungho. mirae squinted, a calculative finger tapping against her chin as she hummed.
there were vague memories of him in her thoughts--if nothing, mirae prided herself in being able to vaguely remember impressionable, hot young men, as many as there were in legacy. byungho dressed coolly, that was a fact that she recalled in her mind as she danced her way flamboyantly towards byungho, eager and ready to introduce herself with a majestic little flourish.
skip, hop, wiggle on the spot, bow.
she swept the imaginary hat off her head in a wide sweeping bow, eyes half closed as she smirked impishly up at byungho, whom she was now in front of, the clear confidence over that series of absolutely horrible dance steps shining as bright as the sun.

“for all of you, she may look familiar to you since she was one of the people who watched all of the auditions. she gave me feedback on everyone’s performances and i’m happy to say that all of you have a role in the musical. i know many of you are wondering what musical all of you were auditioning for and it is…” aecha pauses as she hands each of them a folder containing all of the information they had to know. once she gives the last folder, she gives an endearing smile and reveals, “NEWSIES. it’s been about six years since we’ve done the korean adaptation of the musical, but SONGHEE is here to help prepare all of you to be at your very best.”

MUSICAL PREPARATION
“since we’ve revealed the musical, we expect a lot more from all of you. so starting this month and next, all of you will be practicing diligently. we are planning on starting the production sometime around NOVEMBER, so we don’t have much time to waste.” songhee advises while going down through the list areas that is recommended for each person to work on.

everyone except JINYOUNG and JISOO will be attending the musical workshops and rehearsals five days a week. JINYOUNG and JISOO will be attending the workshops two days a week due to their roles and responsibilities. furthermore, for the NEWSIES GROUP ( anyone that is listed ‘newsies’ in parenthesis ) will be taking stage combat workshops every MONDAY and WEDNESDAY to train them for the musical, which has some fight scenes. for HANBYUL and ALEC, because they took it in the past ( during q3 2020 ) they will be attending again to refresh themselves on the fundamentals. during the remaining of the trimester ( and a bit on the next ), they will be learning the songs, lines, and choreography for the musical to prepare for OCTOBER, where they will have to perform live rehearsals for the press.
on AUGUST 23, all of them will be sent to NEW YORK where they will be attending intensive workshops for the musical. they will be trained by the original choreographers of the musical to make sure that they are prepared for the dance-heavy musical. the trip will last from AUGUST 23 to AUGUST 31, but JISOO, JINYOUNG, and ALEC will be heading back to korea on AUGUST 27 ( the models for their trade show while alec is for ‘business proposal’ filming ).
since they will be overseas, all of them will be staying in a hotel so here is the room arrangements:

minseok was not a singer. of course, he'd auditioned for the company in the beginning with Once Upon a Dream, however, this was well into the career that he’d decided on. minseok had established himself as an actor and so to have to sing again, he would wasn't really into the idea, besides the young man was still quite bitter over having been punished and passed over for casting. that whole train of thought was also very much an industry killer for him. he attended the workshops with no issue but he was just tired of being ignored, being undermined, being outcasted. he knew how everyone else looked at him. They must see him as some sort of troublemaker, weirdo...
a song from a musical for the audition, however? he knew exactly the one he’d go for. Well, there was two in his range. he pondered the decision at home over some drinks. Maybe, he could flex, he supposed, pondering the two song choices he had. Finally he’d settled on one. He already had his date of his audition and he showed up in mid June, for his audition. He had no expectations, after all, he’d held off on everything, since he was still upset at being called out like a child and scolded. He wore a casual white button down and jeans. He wasn’t here to impress. He already knew that he would never make it as a lead or anything.
part 1: song
When his name was called for the first part of the audition, he stepped up. He had introduced himself and mentioned, “I will be singing an excerpt from Waving Through a Window...” He began singing, his voice hesitant.
The song that he’d chosen was pretty close to his own feelings of the past few months. “Step out, step out of the sun If you keep getting burned Step out, step out of the sun Because you've learned because you've learned .....”He definitely felt that he didn’t belong in the acting field, let along the entertainment industry so he genuinely felt like he was stuck on the outside. As he sang, his voice was confident and he knew his own range.
“We start with stars in our eyes We start believing that we belong But every sun doesn't rise....” He wasn’t hitting the high notes but he made an effort. He finished singing, his emotions almost raw.
part 2: scenario
Minseok expected to do well at the dancing. He wasn’t a dancer either. But the next part was improv and he was given his scenario. “don’t look at me like you’re sorry. you’re not sorry.” he was told.
The actor was in his element at that point. The raw emotion of apologies slid right off his face and a condescending smirk made it onto his lips. “Fine, if I’m not sorry, I’m not sorry then. I told them the truth. That it was all you,” he said, a cold mocking tone gracing his voice. “After all, it was all you who sold me out. You tried to frame me. Some best friend you are,” he states, circling as though he’s walking around the invisible best friend. His arms fell open and out of the pockets. “But I am surprised that you managed to get out so early. Good behavior, right? Or did you sell someone else out to get your little ticket to freedom,” a scoff solidified this sentence and a stop. He then spun around and made his way back to his original spot. “We are no longer friends. We may have been at some point, but I have moved on from your little backstabbing charade,” he said, hissing out the word the charade.
“Besides, I don’t think we’d be seeing each other more. If I have my way, you, my dear best friend, are going back behind bars,” he stated. He then leans close, and with a menacing smirk, “And I’ll make sure you stay there. Can’t have you come raining on my parade again,” he added when he was told that his time was up.
The actor straightened and bowed politely before leaving the theater.
when he had heard that he needed to audition for a role in a musical, and he could choose any song he wanted, especially if it was from a musical, the first song that came to mind was scream, performed by zac efron in high school musical 3. he’s not sure why, but it’s very specifically that song that he thinks of first, and he has half a mind to really just go through with it and audition with that.
would the judges judge him harshly because of it? he’s not sure, but he can’t knock the idea. even when he had discussed with a few friends (namely aiden), they had all supported him even if they had chuckled a bit at the suggestion.
he even starts practicing it for a bit, before he has a call with his mother and he mentions that he’s trying out for a musical. she had been following the truth untold faithfully, and had live reacted to him in their kakaotalk group chat. he had told her he was considering high school musical for his song of choice, and from the silence he had heard on her end, alec figured that she didn’t approve.
they chat for a while about it before he promises her that he will not use a high school musical song for a serious musical audition, though he does tell her he can’t promise he won’t use it as the dance audition since he’s really just. not the best dancer around. and he’s had high school musical choreography memorized and learned since before he had ever considered becoming an idol.
so he has to go on a hunt for a song that’s decently within his vocal range. he remembers watching korean musicals with his parents whenever they came to visit korea, because his parents both loved watching musicals, and he tries to recall which ones his mom had liked since she had vetoed his high school musical dreams of being the korean version of zac efron.
eventually he settles on “지금 이 수간” (0:14-2:29) from the musical jekyll and hyde. the song isn’t too hard to sing, but he can put a lot of emotion into the two minutes or so of the song that he gets to sing for the audition.
(when he texts his mom about this, she sends him three thumbs up emojis in a row so he assumes that she approves of his choice.)
PART ONE — song / dance audition
by the time he’s auditioning with the song, alec will admit he’s kind of tired of listening to the song. it’s a good one, and he thinks he’ll do well—even during the ending part where he has to belt the last few notes—but he also never wants to listen to this song again.
he sings the part that he had chosen, trying to put as much emotion into it as he can manage without looking like he’s trying too hard. he had rewatched parts of the musical to refresh his mind of what the character was going through when singing this song, so he taps into his acting side (the side he’s more confident in) and showcases the wonder in the main actor’s voice when he’s singing these lines.
he’s not a singer, but he doesn’t think he does too badly here. at least he’s not going for a main role, so he’s not too worried about doing the absolute best he can. he doesn’t think he’s cut out for being a musical actor anyway, but he’s going to try his best.
the second part is the dance routine, and he really does decide to do a part from high school musical (1 this time, and it’s we’re all in this together of course). he’s thankful for rieon for having roped him into a dance workshop, so he could fix up this short routine even if it was just for this audition. he remembers kim family when he had acted as an idol trainee and had ended up needed to go to dance practice and whatnot all over again. it was reminiscent of that time, and he doesn’t hate it too much now that he’s revisited it.
his mom is probably going to say he’s terrible for using high school musical in the end and not a ‘real musical’ but he had too much fun to care.
PART TWO — scenario audition / a
when he’s finished with that, is when the part that he’s confident in comes up. he’s always been good at improvising on the spot and he hopes that he’s given a scenario that he can work with.
hearing the scenario, alec can’t help but laugh to himself at the thought. he’s never been the one in this position before, because he’s usually the one who’s navigating and is usually pretty good with directions. if anything, he tends to be the one who’s asking others if they’re lost so he thinks it’s pretty funny that this is the scenario he was given. he takes a moment to get into character, even pretending to put on sunglasses. he wanders around for a moment, looking very confident in the direction he’s ‘leading’ everyone in before he starts the scenario.
“what? of course we’re not lost, how could we be lost? do you not understand that i am a master navigator?” he starts off, taking on a haughty tone for the character he had decided he was going to portray. he wants everyone to know that they are most definitely lost, but his character does not believe so.
“i was top of my class in navigation and i’ll also have you know that i ranked in the top five for map-reading and compass-reading too. there is absolutely no way in hell that we’re lost, do you hear me? not at all, none whatsoever,” he says confidently, pulling out a pretend ‘map’ from his pocket. he ‘opens’ the ‘map’ and turns it this way and that to try to find out where they are.
“i can hear you mumbling and grumbling over there, just hold on a minute and i’ll get us going in the right direction again,” he adds, knowing that he was implying that they were currently not going direction, though his character is oblivious to that. he turns the map this way and that, and even comically licks his finger to test the ‘direction of the wind’ before frowning to himself. he adds in a few anecdotes about how he was a great leader—all made up on the spot—to really build up the character he was playing and the situation that he was in.
“what? i have a what?” he asks, before his eyes widen slightly and he nods to himself. “ah, you’re right. my phone. you kids, always relying on technology, you know back in my day we used to print out google directions to get places you know,” he adds, pulling out his phone to type in the location they were headed to and blinking at the screen.
“ah, i see, i was correct all along,” he adds, turning to go back in the direction that he had come. “it’s this way.”
when he’s finished with the scene, alec ‘takes off’ his ‘sunglasses’ and smiles at the panel he was auditioning in front of, bowing and thanking them before leaving. he was pretty satisfied with that.
when she switched to the acting path, yein didn’t quite realized that musicals would be part of it. she’s never really watched musicals, nor has she ever had interest in being in them, and the worst part about all of it was that it involved dancing ( which in turn involved sweating, and just in itself is a big thing that she doesn’t like ).
but she tells herself to have a good attitude about it, and that this would all be good for future development. even if this isn’t the dramas that she was expecting, it would be good experience and another thing to put on her resume in the future. plus, you never know when having musical experience might actually be helpful for a role. not that she can think of any role similar to musicals...but still.
and no matter the situation, yein had always been competitive. so she wanted to get a good role and do her best, to prove to herself that she could do it.
PT. 1 SINGING + DANCING // song: all i want
choosing a song was difficult enough as it was, considering her knowledge of musicals ( or very clear lack of knowledge ). but she settled for one that she had listened to regularly. not that she was a big fan of high school musical the series, but she did love the original high school musical movies, and she had made it a point to make jieun rewatch them with her in preparation for this audition. originally she had considered one of those songs, but she felt like this one spoke to her more, that it was something relatable to her.
so she walked in and greeted the staff, then started her song. it was one that she understood, of wanting to date but finding no one around her that was suitable. throughout her trainee days she was surrounded by guys who were supposedly good looking, and some of them were okay but the second they opened their mouths she felt an immediate ick. she thought that it would get better once she became an actress, but still it felt like there was something not quite connecting. she was at least confident in this part, because singing had been something she enjoyed when she was a trainee, that she did because she liked it and actually enjoyed herself.
which is not the same for the next part of the audition. yein had never liked to dance, and even when she was a trainee she dreaded dance classes and rehearsals. she wasn’t exactly amazing at it, which made her hate it even more. but she remembered the workshops that she took to prepare for the musical, and tried to keep an open mind about it. at the very least, she tries her very hardest to dance the choreography that she had prepared, counting the beats in her head and trying to do what her dance teachers always said — have clean movements and correct timing, and most of it was already done.
PT. 2 ACTING // scenario a
she’s most confident about the acting portion of the audition, and that combined with the relief of her being done with dancing she feels almost a tingling anticipation as she stands in front of the staff, waiting for her instructions.
“admit it; you have no idea where you’re going, do you?”
she gives the staff an incredulous look, rolling her eyes as she crosses her arms over her chest. “of course i know where i’m going. i told you, i’ve been to this place a lot of times before. i’m like...the human kakaomap!” yein gestures to herself, as if to make her point. “besides, have i ever gotten you lost before?” a pause, then she crosses her arms over her chest and continues. “okay well the time we ended up in a completely different part of the city doesn’t count — we were in a foreign country! how was i supposed to know! kakaomap doesn’t even work there, we had to use google maps! i said i’m the human kakaomap, not human every-kind-of-map!
“and remember we ended up finding that park? with all the flowers? so you had a good time, right?” yein looks over her shoulder, smiling almost smugly. “so can you really say we got us lost? i think it’s more like...i got us to our destination, but we just didn’t know that it was our destination.”
another pause as she pretends to walk around a bit, holding up a phone and looking up and down as if trying to find her directions. “um....okay so maybe i’m not one hundred percent sure where we’re going. i mean i’ve been here before but i didn’t get here by myself...” she laughs sheepishly, as if trying to play it off. “okay fine! you caught me! i don’t actually know where i’m going! i mean i thought i did but granted, i was with someone else when i came last time. don’t give that look, kakaomaps isn’t always right either!”
“on the bright side! we can always call a taxi, and i’ll even pay!” and with that she ends her scene, bowing her head to the staff and walking out with a feeling of accomplishment, like a small victory even in just auditioning.
sehoon wanted to do well, he wanted to good in this audition and he knew he would be okay in all aspects but singing, because singing had never been an area that he reached out to work on - he didn’t thoroughly enjoy it as much as dancing or acting, and dancing came to him more naturally than singing ever had. but musicals had been a new interest of his over time, and he wanted to try for the main role for this new musical that was in the works, but with his struggles with singing, he felt a little helpless, but he knew there was always one person who would help him. she had helped him before when it came to singing, and the tips and advice that she had given to him prior he still used to this day and he’s even received positive comments about how his voice had improved, even if it was just a little bit.
so one day in the voice and dictation workshop, sehoon gently grabbed aeri’s wrist when they were able to gather in partners or groups, pulling her away to the side away from everybody. his eyes look hopeful, praying that she would be able to help him. “can i ask for your help? about the audition..?”
sehoon had been in his fair share of musicals by now, and he remembered how.. unmotivated he was the first time. like, he wasn’t too fussed about it but he had to do it, however since that first time, he’s never been able to say he disliked it. he didn’t hate it, and he actually felt a little bit of positivity from it. he even found himself auditioning willingly for the dream high musical, which was a little bit of growth for him if he were honest. and now hearing that there was a new musical production happening that wasn’t hosted by legacy, part of sehoon wanted to audition. for a few reasons really. one being that the experience was always good to have, second being that it was the first one that wasn’t hosted by legacy, so that was a big opportunity for him too, and the third was - because he actually wanted to.
auditions had become almost like a little bit of a routine for sehoon, but this one had a whole different preparation period for him. while filming for the truth untold, he had also been practicing hard on his singing for this audition. out of all his skills, he knew that his singing was the weakest because it had never been an area he felt like he needed to focus on. and dancing came more to him naturally than singing ever did. but he knew he would just about make it if he passed this audition with his singing, so in the midst of rehearsing and filming for the truth untold, sehoon had also been working hard on his vocals in order to match the song he had chosen for his audition, which just so happened to be ‘shallow from a star is born, sung by lady gaga and bradley cooper’. he had seen the musical again recently, having seen it scroll by on his netflix one day, he had his eye on it again, though with his schedules he hadn’t had the chance to sit down and watch it until recently, and the song had just been one that he thoroughly enjoyed. so why not use it for his audition?
the biggest hurdle for him though, was singing, his vocals, and getting the english pronunciation right, because he wasn’t really too familiar with english, his skills were limited but he wanted to do well in the audition. so much that he had even went to aeri for advice and tips on how to do as well as he could, which was a bold step for him considering he wasn’t one to always reach out for help, but aeri made him comfortable, and he knew that she had an extremely talented voice, so she made the most sense to ask. after listening to her advice and tips and performing the song in front of her (which was a big step for him, who would have known?), he felt like he was able to do it decently well, so when the directors signal for him to start, he waited for the instrumental to begin and took a deep breath, preparing himself to sing for what was the first time in a good few months. he wanted to channel the same magical energy from the musical, though he wasn’t sure if his voice was able to do that, but he tried his best, even closing his eyes at certain points as he felt the song.
when the official four minutes of the song were over, sehoon slowly opened his eyes and gave a sheepish, small smile to the directors, taking a few steps back and getting ready for the scenario had chosen, which was ‘scenario a: your friend follows you to go somewhere and after spending thirty minutes walking around, your friend says, “admit it; you have no idea where you’re going, do you?”’. sehoon didn’t want to go with scenario b because he felt like it was too.. close to how he was personally, and scenario c didn’t appeal to him just as much, and having taken comedy workshops before, he knew he’d be able to turn his chosen scenario a little comedic. starting from the corner of the room, sehoon began taking slow strides across the room, glancing to his left and right every few moments as if he was trying to decipher where he was, or where he was heading. he bit his bottom lip too, his facial expressions a little uneasy as he played into the role, glancing behind him as if a friend was following him. changing his facial expression to an almost pained one, he turned around and sighed. “i did. i did, i swear.” sehoon said in defence, voice pleading. “i knew exactly where we were up until... 15 minutes ago..?” he mentioned sheepishly, raising his hand to rub the back of his neck as a little distraction.
a defeated look took over his features as he sighed heavily, flapping his arms against his side as he pretended to watch his friend walk off in front of him. “where are you going? why are you walking off? if i got lost, what makes you think you know where we are?” sehoon called out, voice raised a little as if he was calling out to his friend further away. though his mouth drops open in surprise, tilted to the side slightly before he began taking quick steps as if to catch up to his friend. “what do you mean you knew i was lost the whole time? why didn’t you say anything?!” he raised his voice more, his little quick steps speeding up into an awkward little jog, slowing down until he came to a stop, turning to the directors and bowing to signal the end of the scenario. throughout it all, he had emphasised on the poutiness in his voice and expressions, exaggerating his moves more to give it the little comedic feel. and returning back to his initial spot, he bowed again and retreated out of the room for the next hopeful person.
